Mike McQueary Failed 'Moral Obligation' Says Tom Corbett, Pa. Governor On 'Meet The Press'

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Penn State football coach who told a grand jury that he saw another coach molest a child failed to meet "a moral obligation" to intervene, Pennsylvania's governor said Sunday, adding that he expects more victims to come forward.

The coach who testified, Mike McQueary, had said he saw retired Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in a shower at a campus football facility almost a decade ago. Sandusky is accused of assaulting eight boys over 15 years and has maintained his innocence. The university has put McQueary on leave from his job.

McQueary told the grand jury he was distraught by what he witnessed and walked away after both Sandusky and the boy saw him. He said he told his father what happened and then told head coach Joe Paterno, who reported it to his superiors. But those school officials, athletic director Tim Curley and school vice president Gary Schultz, face perjury charges, accused of covering up McQueary's 2002 report.

The charges were filed last weekend and the grand jury's report made public, and the resulting outrage made it clear that Paterno, who had coached for decades at Penn State, would share the blame. He was fired Wednesday. In his last game, a win over Illinois, he'd become the coach with the most wins in Division I history.

As for McQueary, the current attorney general had clearly decided that he was to be treated as a witness in the case, Gov. Tom Corbett said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

McQueary met "the minimum obligation" of reporting what he saw to his superiors, who are required under Pennsylvania law to report such assaults to authorities. But McQueary "did not in my opinion meet a moral obligation that all of us would have," said the governor, who as attorney general initiated the investigation that led to the charges.

Corbett also said people have to keep in mind "that this is also somebody who is a witness to this crime and is a very important witness."

State lawmakers from both parties have proposed changes to toughen the law that governs the reporting of sex assaults, Corbett added. He said he would not be surprised to see it strengthened this year.

"We have to make sure the change in the law is one that is effective," he said.

Corbett said he expects more allegations of abuse to materialize, a common occurrence in abuse cases.

"When the word gets out, when people understand that authorities are actually doing something about this, that they may be believed, then more people come forward," Corbett said.

Authorities have asked for victims to contact them.

Sandusky encountered all the boys through a charity he founded to help at-risk children, Second Mile, prosecutors have said. Leaders of the organization plan to meet soon to determine its future, Corbett said.

"If you talk to people who have worked with Second Mile, it has done great work," he said. "And if it should cease to exist, I am hopeful that other organizations will pick up the work that they did. We need to reach out to these children. We need to give them guidance."

I think it's easy to pin the belief that this was allowed to happen on this one Assistant Coach -- probably the only coach on staff to lodge a complaint. But the fact is, Paterno, Tim Curley, the Campus Police, the University President simply did nothing to rid themselves of Sandusky. Paterno even ALLOWED Sandusky to continue coaching for one more year after the reported incident from McQueary, allowed him to bring his "kids" on campus, allowed him to run youth football camps, allowed him to as of 2 weeks ago, to have an office across from the football facilities, allowed Sandusky to bring kids to bowl games... the LIST goes on and on. And I think the LIST of people who knew and had the actual POWER to do something about Sandusky will continue to grow.

Corbett, (former Attorney General), Some members of the Board of Trustees,. Sandusky's wife, probably knew or had suspicions, since she was aware of the allegations from 1998, also his 6 adopted children from Second Mile, may have seen or heard things, Second Mile, and Wendell COurtney, unless he is protected by attorney client privledge (atty for PSU) at the time...for a start

The sheer depth of the cover-up and negligence from coaches and on up is simply atrocious... and everyday new pieces are uncovered regarding 'who' knew what and then proceeded to cover it up will grow. It's why the Feds need to take over at this point.
Now they're saying something about a PA bill that had been introduced (and passed) that allowed Penn State officials to "handle" allegations in-house and records sealed... or something along those lines. Like I said, the Feds need to take over at this point.

McQueary's email is being referred here by =====In a series of tweets from Alexander's feed, he quotes McQueary as saying, "I did the right thing...you guys know me...the truth is not out there fully...I didn't just turn and run...I made sure it stopped...I had to make quick tough decisions..." Unfortunately, it looks like MCQ tought decision didnt include taking the victim with him? or calling 911 immediately.

Yeah, and why didn't he say he stopped it when he testified in the grand jury? He said he left and called his daddy.
10:45 AM on 11/15/2011
I am not sure what he means by stopped. Did he "stop" it as physically ..make sure the victim and Sandusky separated? or did he mean "stop" as in he told his Dad, who, not wanting to be the fmaily to bring Sandusky down, told him to lay this on Paterno. Remember, Sandusky was no longer an employee, so..why not call the police? I think the MCQ family was very very tight with Sandusky, and they didnt want to be the ones to bring him done, put that on Paterno. Either way, he left the victim with Sandusky, I mean if you "stopped" then why not bring the victim to a safe place? none of this passes the smell test. It makes me wonder what he saw, was it maybe attempted rape? or rape? NOT DEFENDING, just trying to make sesn of the clarification he is now making. Doesnt mean he lied in the GJ report necessarily , but maybe his omission about this , "stopped it" kept them from asking him more questions about why he didnt call 911.
08:47 PM on 11/14/2011
So,.there is a story floating around in the Sports Media, that I read that MCQ in fact sent an email to his teammates, and said that "he stopped it" "did the right thing" referring to the 2002 reported rape in 2002. So for most people that may alleviate alot of criticism..for me, I am even more confused. He says he stopped it, then he tells his Dad, who is very very good friends of Sandusky, he tells his son to tell Paterno..I read as, we dont want to be the "ones" or "family" to tell this and tunr on our good neighbor and friend..lets put this on Paterno to handle...? I mean..come on..you dont tell your son to call the police,? if he stopped it, he can report it...maybe he is no longer a coward as ppl were claiming, but for the same reason Paterno was fired for not "protecting the victims" or moral obligation..what he now says he did , doesn tmake any sense at all..to not call 911..or stay with the victim?

McQueary should bow his head in shame for the rest of his life. I have no idea how his wife can even look at him without feeling utter disgust. Unfortunately, the victim of this incident had the misfortune of having someone witness the crime against him who had the body of a 28 year old man and the mental maturity of a 12 year old kid. The victim unluckily had a witness who is in the 1% of human beings that would walk away instead of intervening, and that is just horribly sad. McQueary is hardly the role model that a Penn State football coach should be. He is just mentally and morally weak.

Corbett is entitled to his opinion & feeling - but what purpose is he serving by making these pronouncements? Who's cause is he advancing - other than his own?
... how is his mucking around on TV doing anything other than making complication for the prosecution?
Now, since Corbett was the Atty. General of PA for the last 6 years of this mess (2005-2011), he knows the case, the background and the challenges of prosecuting the case - So why is he grandstanding - making statements and pronouncing "guilt" - yes it makes him out to be a "call 'e the way he sees 'em kind of guy" - but he knows it creates difficulty for the prosecution - smells like Corbett is speaking so forcefully so as to create distance for himself - because .... one could ask how much Corbett knew, when he knew it and could be asked why, during his 6 years as Ag or his time as Gov. he did not take some sort of action .. and of course, he would say "Oh I didn't know genuine details, what I knew was all second-hand, I understood other people were handling it, I did what I was required to do, .... and really .. if I had unilaterally reached in and taken an action, we would have been slapped with law suits" ... stinks like a guy looking to build his own firewalls.

Corbett was AG from 1995-1997. Then he was elected to AG in 2004 until he was elected Governor this past year. There is no way he had no idea about this investigation, as well as he investigated a different claim against Sandusky in 2009 in which nothing was done. This scandal seems to have tenacles that reach further than Penn State University.
09:10 PM on 11/15/2011
He had at the very least, HEARD of this ..and..curiously.. you would think he would wonder about the 1998 allegation..since he later on went on to be on the Board of Trustees. I would bet, when this all came out..he was thinking "not surprised" ....
09:57 AM on 11/14/2011
His initial reaction is one thing. People can say what they would have done but no one knows for certain unless you are in that situation.

But what about afterwards? Unless he created his own special alternate universe, he had to know that something more should be done than telling the coach. That is where he failed so for people to be stuck on what he did or did not do in that moment, is pointless. I have a hard time with people referring to this as a mistake and if it is a mistake then how about the fact that he had opportunities to atone?
09:14 PM on 11/15/2011
It has been confirmed he told PSU Police, and yes they are the same as State of PA police. But what doesnt make any sense is why ..if you arent going to call the police, you you allow Sandusky and the victim to leave together? I mean, MCQ now clarifies, he "stepped in" "stopped it" and seems as if he now means, they saw me, and it stopped...he then leaves, tells his Dad, who givs him ridiculous advice..to lay this on Paterno to escalate up the chain of command. Sandusky wasnt an employee..there was no reason to lay this on Paterno, you call the police period. I still say, MCQ Dad, gave him advice based on the fact that their family and Sandusky were very very close friends, and he didnt want his son , not himself to be the ones to turn their good friend in..let paterno do that...but it turns out that Paterno told the same police that MCQ is now getting credit for having told...karma

Corbett needs to do what he can to get another judge to hear this case.

The judge who set Sandusky's bail...... is a volunteer at Second Mile.

How deep does all this corruption go????

sorry- my first part disappeared into pending comments i believe- but here is summary-
why is no one looking for victims 1975-1998- have to be some
where is wife and investigation interview?
where is sandusky and why is he out?
where are files/interviews with assistants/legal justification for corbett no bringing charges 1998
sandusky indictment conveniently delayed till AFTER joe secures winningest coach- that's surprising- NOT
why sandusky still roaming halls/recruiting till few weeks ago?
literally hundreds of people had to have had icky feeling or knew rumors abt this guy- incding EVERY PSU football player
Gricar could definitely have been silenced- reopen
Dont be too hard McQ- yes should have killed the guy- BUT may have been victim himself as grew up with this monster- 28 is late adolscence in this bankrupt society- look at "students" flipping vans
this is BIG MACHINE and we need to go all out here investigators!

SOme good questions. Wife, I feel knows something after the 1998 incident when Sandusky says he wont stop showering with little boys..Sandusky is out on bail assumedly because the judge set bail based on GJ report, similiar type cases, and the fact that he is presumed innocent until proven gulty. The reason they didnt bring charges against Sandusly in 1998, is that he did not have sex with those boys in the showers. The vitims dont say he did, and then at that point you only hav e a case of inappropriate touching/ or maybe fondlin. That is why I think they met with the Mother and Sandusly, set up a sting operation to get him to admit that he did intend sexual advances..that didnt work as Sandusky only said that he would still shower with boys..didnt admit anything they could charge him with. These cases are so very difficult to prove, its the vitcims word again Sandusky and no physical evidence and no witness. sandusky is guilty no doubt, but it has to be proven. The issue with more victinms, is that, you also may have "victims" come forward as "copycat" claiming the same modi operandi as the other vitcims. The process with new victims is going to take time to make sure you have Sandusky victims, and if their are any out there that may have physical proof, sought medical attention, told their parents, teacher or anyone else... to make this all stick to Sandusky.
09:35 AM on 11/14/2011
yeah- and i was thinking Gricar may have worried that any secretly taped confession would be thrown out anyway- unless they had warrant for mom wearing wire or cop in closet or however they did it.. but like you say, he may not have admitted actual act- i am surprised judge would let him out due to flight risk, or suicide- but then again- why would he leave happy valley- he never left for another football job! and he certainly wont kill himself- too self-centered! i wish i could understand that wife!
03:26 PM on 11/15/2011
Not just till after Joe secures winningest coach, also until after Tom Corbett elected goernor.

OH! VERY interesting- didn't realize as live away from penn politics these days- just finding out about corbett, and so much else- not liking any of what i am hearing!
11:33 PM on 11/13/2011
I m waiting for Second Mile's turn in the media barrel..I assume that will happen this week. Also, Sandusky's wife. After the 1998 incident..RED FLAGS there..if she knew bout him admitting to the showers with boys and "touching" and that he said he wouldnt stop showering with boys..then she knows..deep down..she had to know that things werent right...and should have done something moral..like call the police. Or is she protected?
11:23 PM on 11/13/2011
continued...Did he think he would "protect" the university and its money by staying quiet? well that didnt work! No we are REALLY screwed. After all the lawsuits- and shot reputation- what's left? We need to blast the doors of this thing wide open and question everyone even remotely involved... Even the janitors knew-and Sandusky never actually left the facilities- he was still there and recruiting!! I'm a PSU grad and MAD AS HELL. I want every cent back.. And ultimate justice for anyone that could damage a baby for life. This country has really gone to hell.
11:22 PM on 11/13/2011
Questions:
Why is no one searching for victims at 2nd mile from 1975-1998- There MUST be some!
Where is Sandusky wife? Somebody question or investigate her..
Where is Sandusky? Why was he allowed out?
Why aren't we seeing files/interviewing office assistants/hearing why Corbett did not go after Sandusky back in 1998?
Reopen Gricar investigation.. again...
Was Sandusky indictment delayed until after winningest coach secured by JoePa? BET SO!
Bet there a zillions more witnesses that "knew" but just looked other way- 2nd mile people, principals, assist. principals, coaches, teachers at local schools, every football player at PSU- give me break. Even if they did not see- had to have icky feeling or heard rumors.
Yes, absolutely McQ should have stepped in and killed that MF himself. But he also may have been abused or brought up with this ^&*%head. 28 is still a late adolescent- look at the morons flipping vans. He is not the devil in this story, it's MUCH bigger. In a sense it's all of us, and this will help us be more active protectors of kids going fwd.. But what we really have to zero in on is HOW FAR does this GO!? Sandusky set this thing up for himself in 1975!! Were there other sickos participating? WHY would JoePa protect him once he found out?! Was he simply weak, or is there a MACHINE of big, wealthy criminals all in bed (literally) with each other?

When will one of our LAME Mainstream Media "Reporters" ask the current Gov. of Pennsylvania who was the AG when all of this stuff was brought to light......... Why didn't his office request an ARREST WARRANT for Sandusky.......... This c.l.o.w.n. Corbett has the nerve to throw McQ under the bus, when his AZZZZZ failed to act just like Paterno......... Pennsylvania needs to IMPEACH or RECALL this F.O.O.L.

Agree..he knows more than he is letting on. Some of the info he knows may be protected by law, and some..he probably should have "done more"..once he knew.
