The Way To A Woman's Heart: 19th Century Print Attempted To Map Female Emotion

First Posted: 11/14/11 05:32 PM ET Updated: 11/14/11 05:32 PM ET

If you had to visualize your own emotional landscape, would it look anything like this?

This Map of the Open Country of a Woman's Heart by D. W. Kellogg, created sometime between 1833 and 1842, part of the American Antiquarian Society's current exhibit "Beauty, Virtue & Vice: Images of Women in Nineteenth-Century America" (check out the whole exhibit here -- it's worth it) offers a sense of how women were perceived 150 years ago. With characteristics like "Love of Display," "Love of Dress," "Love of Admiration," "Coquetry," and "Selfishness" occupying most of the real estate -- even the province of Sentiment is traversed by the "River of Lasciviousness" -- and all positive traits, including the "City and District of Love," surrounded by a fairly substantial mountain range, the message is pretty explicitly "beware all who enter here."

The curator's notes state, "Although the image claims to have been drawn by 'A Lady,' it is just as likely that it proceeded from the imagination of a man," and that possibility is not so hard to imagine, given the way this particular map is labeled. Still, it's worth noting that one of the oldest and most famous examples of sentimental cartography, the Carte de Tendre, is attributed to a woman, the French writer Madeleine de Scudery.

And this mapping of human thoughts and feelings isn't dead. Brain Pickings has a great roundup of 5 atlases of the human condition, past and present, and fortunately, these are more forgiving of those whose psyches they claim to represent.

What would be the most prominent features on your internal map? If you're artistically inclined and actually feel like plotting it out, we'd love to see! Just scan and send to women@huffingtonpost.com.

Interesting in so many ways.

I blogged about this piece, lauding Huffington Post. I think it's an interesting concept in general: that we like to map things. Correctly, is the desired outcome. But several things are truthfully static:
1. Mapping of anything--even when it is accurately done--is subject to change.
2. Accuracy is completely dependent on facts
3. Facts can and do change
4. Some things do not change, or haven't, to the best of our knowledge, yet. (H20 is H20, for example; however, if we continue to disregard what we do to the planet, H20 as we know it, may change drastically. We as a species and planet, need H20. If it changes completely, will all life be able to adapt and survive?)

We map emotions, genetics, land masses, oceans, space, populations, etc., all of which fluctuates and changes over time.

Mapping helps us navigate, plan, live. In some instances, like attempting to map living beings' emotional make-ups, it is less about cartography techniques, more about wishful thinking. The need to get a grip or a handle on something mysterious to us. It is a way of making us believe we are able to get control. To conquer. To own, or possess.

I totally love this article, and the links. Can't believe I've just now read this, since this is from 2011.

Just check out pick up artists. The way to a woman's heart is to pretty much act like you don't care about her at all and treat her like a toy.

Sad but true.

I don't agree with you on this, but have to admit, I like how you expressed it.

HuffPost readers who liked this article should check out another feature by the American Antiquarian Society about this cartographic gem in the current issue of Glimpse Journal (www.glimpsejournal.com). We at the journal are delighted to find "...Open Country of Woman's Heart" making waves elsewhere on the web!

Thanks! I have General Anxiety Disorder and OCD so it get's kinda strange sometimes but I am also a certified P - 5 teachers (tutored at Sylvan before the recession). It's not just about my son and me, I include my views on news (like Caylees Law over the summer). There is a lot more intelligence to SAHMs then we are given credit for. I hope you enjoy it!!!

I'll admit that it's pretty much accurate, even now with all the stuff we have that we didn't have then...some things never change!

Obviously out of date given there seems to be a barrier between money and love. It said something about patience or respect......all seems stupid.

Some shots, hot bod and good base tan is all you need.................
