Sharks And Seals: Amazing Underwater Images From National Geographic's New Book "Ocean Soul" (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 11/14/11 11:17 AM ET Updated: 11/14/11 12:42 PM ET

National Geographic describes its latest book, "Ocean Soul" ($50), as "a love story." It's a stunning showcase of underwater images, all shot by Brian Skerry, a photojournalist for National Geographic magazine.

"One animal that keeps me pondering is the shark," says Skerry in the book. "Spellbound by these enigmatic animals since I first encountered them in New England, I never tire of watching their special blend of power and grace. Despite much observation, we know so little about their lives."

Witness a glimpse into the wonders and mysteries of the oceans in this series of images from "Ocean Soul".

You've gotta see these photos BIG to really appreciate them. If you're in DC you can come by National Geographic headquarters and ogle some of Skerry's best work on display: http://events.nationalgeographic.com/events/exhibits/2011/10/05/ocean-soul/. Through Feb. 12 and it's free.

We've traveled to the moon, but we know so little of this world of ours. Beautiful.

Gorgeous pictures. I love underwater photography anyway... I think it's partly the sense of space, released from gravity.

First shark and whale picture and fantastic. Although with a shark that large coming up behind me I'm not sure I could maintain my bearing.

The photographs from National Geographic's new book called Ocean Souls are absolutely amazing.
I've always enjoyed looking at underwater photography and these are so colorful with such vivid colors.
I love the title Ocean Souls and look forward to purchasing it at some point, maybe from Amazon.ca.

It's kind of funny that virtually everything filmed or photographed underwater looks Photoshopped. I wonder why that is?

Oh, HELL NO! If that shark had come up behind me like that, I would have filled my wetsuit. I have been on non-cage shark dives before, but that behemoth would have stopped my heart.
