Thanksgiving At Target: Over 100,000 Sign Petition Asking Retailer Not To Open At Midnight On Black Friday [UPDATE]

Anthony Hardwick Target Midnight Opening

First Posted: 11/14/11 01:48 PM ET Updated: 11/16/11 01:10 PM ET

The lines between Thanksgiving day and Black Friday are blurring this year and some aren't happy about it.

Tens of thousands have signed a petition at Change.org asking Target not to open at midnight on Thanksgiving as planned and to open at 5 a.m. on Friday instead to allow workers to spend more time with their families. Anthony Hardwick, an Omaha, Nebraska-based Target employee, said he started the petition because asking workers to arrive at the store no later than 11 p.m. on Thanksgiving day would cut into the time they have to celebrate the holiday with family.

UPDATE: More than 100,000 people have now signed the petition. This post has also been updated to reflect Target's response to the petition.

"With the midnight opening, employees like myself will have to leave for work right in the middle of Thanksgiving Dinner," Hardwick said in a statement. "We don't mind hard work, but cutting into our holidays is a step too far."

Target isn't the only store opting to open on Thursday instead of Friday. Macy's is also offering shoppers the opportunity to stand in line leading up to a deal bonanza at midnight and Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, is opening at 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

But the stores could experience an unexpected backlash from shoppers. Some consumers say they may not take advantage of Black Friday sales in part in an effort to protest retailers' decisions to make their employees work on part of Thanksgiving, according to The New York Times. For others, being in line when the sales start on Thanksgiving Day will cut too much into their own family time.

Retailers may be pushing their openings back earlier in an effort to build off of the momentum of strong sales in recent months. Retail sales probably rose in October by 0.3 percent, according to the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. If the forecast holds true, the gain would follow a 1.1 percent boost that was the most in seven months.

Big box stores may also be capitalizing on consumers' interest in doing everything they can to get a good deal in tough economic times. Though holiday spending is expected to increase by 2.8 percent this year, 62.2 percent of consumers say the economic climate will impact their holiday shopping decisions, according to a National Retail Federation survey cited by CNNMoney. In addition, most consumers said discounts would be the most important factors when deciding what to buy this year.

With the average price of a Thanksgiving meal up 13 percent this year, and one in five Americans struggling to put food on table, many big box retailer could face an uphill battle getting customers in the store this year. Last year, ShopperTrak reported that although foot traffic at black friday stores rose 2.2 percent, retail sales didn't keep pace, indicating a smaller average purchase.

Target issued a statement Wednesday responding to the petition, alleging that Hardwick was never scheduled to work on Thanksgiving. Part of the statement is below as it appears on the Consumerist:

Our understanding is that this team member also works full-time for another retailer. In early November, he informed his Target managers that he was scheduled to work at his other job on Black Friday and indicated that he needed the day off from Target. We honored that request.

Target does our best to work around the schedules of all of our team members, making every effort to accommodate their requests. Target will offer holiday pay to all hourly team members who work on Thanksgiving Day.

I won't reveal whether I am religiously observant, or which religion I was raised in. I will, however, say that the supposedly-"Christian" majority in this country are disgraceful.

We can blame the CEO's and shareholders of the Targets and Wal-Marts, for destroying what was once the family-nurturing institution known as Thanksgiving. (NOTE: Retail employees' ability to enjoy TG with their families was already destroyed when they were required to report for work before sunup the next day. Making them show up in the late afternoon of TG itself is just . . . what? Another inevitable step on our march toward a society in which no conceivable outrage is inconceivable any longer?)

But, no -- the corporations alone, and the "consumer culture", are not to blame. All you millions who stampede to those sales, even on Friday, are the disgrace. You are the enablers.

"Put Christ back into Christmas"??!! When was He ever in it?

Onward, Christian soldiers.

Leave the American tridition alone! Close your stores you greedy bunch of non-Americans, Go back to your countries and open your store. Half of you owners are not American Citizens but you take over the USA buying are stores and then trying to change our freedom. I will not shop at any of these stores ever again and maybe their are others who feel the same.GREED,GREED GREED! JUST LIKE THE GOVERNMENT

Target isn't the only one that forces their employees to work Thanksgiving. I have a friend who has to work every Thanksgiving and then have to work 14 hours and that is Home Shopping Network. While the CEO and the rest of the greedy pigs in the executive suites are off in Paris or carving their turkeys in Aspen and in front of the fireplace the hourly workers are working in a dirty dingy warehouse packing boxes for the post office and ups to pick up. And guess what, there's no one to pick them up because ups and the postal service have the day off.

Target sucks to work at. They treat their employees like s***. They force their lower employees to work while the managers do nothing and sit in a group and talk about how high class they are. On Thanksgiven all the lower workers have to come in or be fired. They fired me and said it was job abandonment and said I missed days that I wasn't even schedule to work. The big joke about target is when you see a doctor he reports everything to the insurance agency, who reports it to target, and your managers share your personal information with everyone including interns.

I worked in retail for most of my life. I didn't particularly like working on holidays, but I understand that sales occur when CUSTOMERS WANT TO BUY. I would not have CHOSEN to work in retail if I wanted to dictate MY hours to the store. Working in RETAIL is a CHOICE! If you don't want to work on a holiday, DON'T WORK IN RETAIL! Why is this concept so difficult to understand? If you want all of your holidays off, WORK AT A FACTORY! Just get a different job, and stop complaining. I looked forward to the additional commissions or OVERTIME!

That's your problem? Overtime pay? Even if Target doesn't pay OT, a lot of other retailers do. YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORK AT TARGET! Target does NOT have a class of SLAVES working for them. Last I knew, people have a choice to work where they want to. Millions of people work on STRAGHT COMMISSION. OT isn't much of a factor like CHOOSING what you want to do for work.

I am so heartened by this new awareness of the conditions which employees have to endure.

It is time for some "New Rules" to protect workers from the abuses of owners and managers who don't care about the lives of their employees.

They systematically exploit them by forcing them to work difficult schedules such as this Thanksgiving Day malarkey, routinely keeping their weekly hours just below full time so as to deny them benefits and paying them a low wage while the company and the board of directors are making multi-millions and even billions of dollars.

I am ALL for worker respect and consideration.

HOWEVER there is COMPETITION to consider.
Walmart and the rest are open 24 hours during this season.

WHY CAN'T THEY HIRE EXTRA WORKERS???

I am sure there are unemployed who would be willing to do the vacation time, freeing up the holidays for the regular senior employees.

More money for previously unemployed people to spend.

Economy booster.

Win, win, win!!!

Because you'd still need regular workers to supervise the inexperienced extra workers, and the cost of training extra workers just for a single day would wipe out any potential profit.

What you're describing is called the Tragedy of the Commons. Everyone knows that opening earlier and earlier is a bad thing, reaction to it is almost universally negative, but those who do it do gain a short-term advantage, and those who don't are at a disadvantage, meaning that everyone has to do it in order to compete.

The best defence? In this case, the only ones I can think of are customer boycotts of shops opening on Thanksgiving, and Unions to prevent reprisals against staff who refuse to work those days.

They will not hire any more. They had signs post saying "Speed is Life" and had managers bully you. The place can be like nazi germany.

I would never shoo on a holiday and NOT because it cuts my time down (which would be enough) but mainly because it shows an incredible amount of greed, disrespect and a lack of empathy for their employees - who are already overworked and underpaid.

I love Target but in protest - I am not shopping at either Target, Walmart or any other store that opened on Thanksgiving. I mean its not like the employees were given a choice - they were told to work the assigned hours or don't work at all ..... I live in a college city and know a lot of students who were threatened with the loss of their jobs, for insubordination.

They could have easily drummed up a marketing event that gathered extra shoppers - without the pure meanness to their employees.

A Target employee could have died after driving her car into a 20-foot deep canal after working the night shift on Black Friday. Target response was the typical "We care for our employees and our prayers are with her and her family, and hopes she makes a speedy recovery" I'm pretty sure the spokesperson read that off a piece of paper as she counted the money she was making on Black Friday.

The petition should have applied to all retailers rather than just Target. Walmart and Toys r us opened earlier than Target yet I don't think people did petitions for them to open later. Since retail sales went up 7% from last year we can expect an earlier opening next year, hell they might be open all hours starting from Thanksgiving to Monday.

These people should be happy to have a job. They are there to perform a customer service and black friday is one of the biggest days in their line of work. Are people not thankful for even having a job? Maybe this individual is just another lazy American, always wanting more and more for less and less. They were probably upset thinking that they would have to work instead of shop that day? What about the people who work at the gas stations or restaurants? You took that job knowing your responsibilities. FYI: I am 22 years old. I work between 12 and 15 hours a day 7 days a week. Manual Labor. I make less than $25k/year. I also go to school FULL TIME. I wasn't able to make it home for thanksgiving this year or last. Quit looking for a handout and be thankful for your opportunity to put that food on the table.

Congratulations for finding the time to set up an account and make a posting here. Did you deprive yourself of sleep to do so?

You deserve a pat on the back from a one-percenter, but if you have a heartattack by the time you're 40, make sure you have that private health care insurance plan set up.

I'm sure they have no problem working on Black Friday, which isn't really what we're talking about, is it? We're talking about the job for which they're thankful requiring them to work extended, outside of normal business hours hours, including cutting into the previous day's holiday. The real hope is that everyone overspends because Black Friday drives them into a "savings" frenzy.

Your living away from home is your choice. Complaining about abusive and abnormal business practices is hardly looking for a handout, but then you have your knickers in a holier than thou twist, don't you?

My daughter had the 11 p.m. Thanksgiving and overnight scenario last year. This year, she had to work on Thanksgiving Day and actually did miss the family dinner because she worked all day (and then again on Black Friday). I give this retailer two years tops before they're open on Christmas Day and by that time holidays mean nothing special anymore to anyone except corporate greed because customers with decent jobs and paid holidays are free to come in and shop. It's not like they can't post the big sales on adjacent days and keep the holidays themselves sacred-or didn't you think of that?

When you work 11pm Thanksgiving to 11am Black Friday, you know how much "Holiday Pay" they give you? One hour's worth.

That's total BS of course.

It depends on the job.
Working 12 hours will get you overtime at LEAST!
But again, this sort of thing varies from job to job.

Most ANY job will compensate you for working holidays, BUT you WILL have to work holidays ESPECIALLY if you are in the business of selling consumer goods.
They have SALES on holidays so they can get people to come OUT and buy - as opposed to staying home with family...

I took a secondary (seasonal) job at a major retailer. I am getting ready now (at nearly 1 am) to go to work soon. I am personally thankful for the opportunity and ability to earn a little extra income, even if it meant I had to cut my family celebration a little short. In this economy jobs don't grow on trees, and anything that promotes employment (and the holiday season does in a HUGE way) is not the travesty so many make it out to be.
01:05 AM on 11/28/2011
The message here is cutting into the holiday alot not a little. retailors can all agree to open at 7 am on black friday not on thanksgiving day at 10 pm. and everbody would be happy. im in retail 36 years and can tell that it worked fine years ago, give your workers family time when you can and you'll have happier and more productive people. not burnt out pissed off ones....

Perhaps my difference in opinion comes from years of working in industry. Factories do not shut down, not for holidays.
01:30 AM on 11/24/2011
Frankly, I'm tired of the corporate greed. When the economy crashed, the corporations tightened their belts and keep tightening and tightening. The fat companies have realized they can deliver the products at a fraction of the cost, yet do you, the consumer, see a cut in prices? Quite the opposite.

The Black Friday situation is the ULTIMATE in corporate greed. With unemployment so high, the corporations simply say, "if you don't do this there are 10 people who are willing to take your place."

I don't know what the solution is.

But you will find me, at work, serving you the consumer... while my kids are home alone on the holiday weekend. I have no choice. Those that do have a choice, enjoy your families this weekend.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Why is this such a surprise, this is exactly what Corporate America and the GOP wants of the middle/lower classes, employees who do exactly as they are told, accept whatever pay they are given or let them quit and starve.

I'm staying away from all the stores on Thurs. and won't be spending a dime!

Hey Tony, how about you just quit. That way, you don't have to be inconvenienced at all. Or maybe Target should just fire you so that you can enjoy the full holiday season.
08:55 AM on 11/24/2011
Or maybe he can just work til he drops...hey, then there will be another opening so we can get another one of those deadbeats off unemployment, right?

Why do you make such remarks ? If the government is allowed to have those holidays off shouldn't everyone and why can't black fri happen on fri night through sat morning ? I don't know about anyone else but , id like to eat my thanksgiving dinner with my family and not having to worry about going to work so some people can come out to shop ! Check it out if you wait one extra day , the stuff you wanted to buy will still be there ! I say shut these stores down on holidays and open back up the next day ...We deserve to be with our families just like everyone else does on the holidays !

That may be true. For you. And many others also.

HOWEVER not EVERYONE feels that way.

Not EVERYONE even celebrates Thanxgiving!!

You guys are making me a little less proud to be an ULTRA RADICAL, LEFTIST OCCUPY SUPPORTER.

Selling consumer goods requires being available WHENEVER there are people ready to buy.
You can't manipulate such a market.
You can only SERVE such a market and make money, or cater to your IN-flexible cultural needs and NOT make money on holidays.

Your choice!

I support the greedy capitalist overlords on this one!
