Gmail Down? Problems Plague Many Tuesday Morning (UPDATE)

UPDATE: By 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Gmail service was returning to normal for most users, according to Down Right Now and the Google Apps Status Dashboard.

PREVIOUSLY: Gmail users were met with issues sending and receiving emails on Tuesday morning.

The problem may be affecting Gmail, as well as Gmail via Google Apps.

Down Right Now reported a "likely service disruption" for Gmail after 9 a.m.

Around the same time, the Google Apps Status Dashboard showed a service disruption for Google Mail; other services appeared to be functioning normally.

Google's official Gmail Twitter feed has been silent on the issues so far this morning, but Tweeters are sounding off about the problems.

According to tweets, Google is informing some users that messages cannot be delivered because of a server error. The following message pops up after a failed delivery attempt: "Oops... a server error occurred and your email was not sent. (#758)."

Other users on Twitter say that their accounts are inaccessible this morning because of maintenance.

Yes having problems with gmail! Constantly being asked to provide my username and password. I even went the route of changing my password yet I'm still getting these annoying pop ups. What can be done?

Mine has been acting wacky since yesterday. I get messages on Gmail on my phone but not in my inbox in the web browser and if they do show up they are seriously delayed. Weird!

mine has been screwy since yesterday. i can see my emails but when i click on them they are all completely blank. i once received a message about Rich text editor failure, but i doubt this is the issue.

Since last Thursday, I've been not receiving emails from a few contacts that have had no issue ever emailing me before. Gmail seems to not be receiving emails from servers and is from others. Really frustrating, as business contacts have been emailing me back and their emails never made it through.

Down today since 5am... no acknowledgement on the status sites...down most of yesterday but status sites said site was not down. Only today are the sites admitting the outage yesterday. This is FRUSTRATING.

I am being told that google have detected unusual activity on my account and that I (1) need to give them my mobile number so they could send me a text containing a code which I then enter on screen. This then leads to another page saying change password. Not happy with what is going on so have instigated a virus scan on my computer just in case.

As of 4:30 p.m. eastern, email service is still unavailable for my business. Google has not handled communication well. The "maintenance" message displayed to users is misleading and disrespectful to business users. Also, Google continues to report the problem as resolved for all users on their status page even though the problem seems to be ongoing for many users. I am not sure how much of this reporting inaccuracy is due to ignorance, or disregard, for the small business owners who are severely impacted by this outage. I will definitely keep this in mind as I weigh my options for an email host.
