1 In 5 Americans Has Hearing Loss: Study

Hearing Loss

Hearing loss may be more common than previously thought, with a new study suggesting as many as one in five Americans ages 12 and older are affected by the condition.

The research, published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine, shows that more than 48 million people in the United States have hearing loss in at least one ear. U.S. News and World Report points out that previous estimates for hearing loss were around 21 to 29 million.

The study was based on data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Surveys (NHANES) that has been gathered since 1971. Researchers also found that women and African Americans had the lowest risk of hearing loss, and that the risk for hearing loss seemed to double for every 10 years of age, according to U.S. News and World Report.

CNN reports that even though our genes and our age may play a part in hearing loss, many of the cases may be caused by environmental factors like listening to music at too high of a volume.

"The tricky thing about loud noise exposure is that most people won't see the impact for many years later,' study researcher Dr. Frank R. Lin, an assistant professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery and epidemiology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, told CNN. "So consumers aren't aware they are damaging their hearing until it's too late."

Dr. Rob Jackler, Stanford University School of Medicine professor and hearing committee chairman of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, explained to ABC News how to tell when loud noise is affecting hearing:

That ringing or hollow sound in one's ear after listening to a steady stream of loud noise is known as a temporary threshold shift. That shift is a "red flag" for causing potential permanent damage, said Jackler, especially if the ringing lasts more than a few hours. Impulse noise is even worse than the temporary threshold, though.

Last year, researchers found that about one in five teens suffered from some form of hearing loss in 2005 to 2006, a 30 percent increase from adolescent hearing loss rates in 1988 to 1994. That research was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Just laughing at the comments similar to "what?" as if they cannot hear... although I don't remember any noise coming from this article. Looks all visual to me, but hey, that's just me.

Listening to iPods and MP3 players may help motivate and push us through workouts, but clearly they have some unintended consequences. Adding on to this growing concern, here's an article I wrote on hearing loss- http://www.healthyanswers.com/general-health/2008/10/how-to-prevent-hearing-loss/

Changes in air pressure effect my ability to hear clearly plus I suffer from constant ringing in my ears. Recently I was prescribed allergy medication for mold problems in my apartment. Surprisingly enough it has caused the ringing to subside some. Hurray!

It's annoying to be in a restaurant and hear plates and glasses clinking, waiters yelling orders to the kitchen, patrons talking over loud TV and backround music, the booth next to you talking to friends two tables away, and fire trucks and police cars roaring by, while you are trying to listen to your waitress announce the daily specials. And I thought I may have a hearing problem ???-------------Not !
