King Of Bhutan Shows Off Cowboy-Inspired Look (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 11/15/2011 2:54 pm   Updated: 11/15/2011 2:55 pm

Who needs European royal newlyweds when you've got this adorable pair from Bhutan?

Last month the 31-year-old King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, married Jetsun Pema, a 21-year-old commoner with an airline pilot dad and plenty of fashion cred that caught our attention.

Since the October royal wedding, the pair have made plenty of appearances clad in all sorts of colorful looks. According to Business Bhutan, the newly-crowned Pema must dress in colors that reflect her kham (birth element), in accordance with Tibetan astrology.

We're not sure what Pema's kham is, but today she stepped out in lovely navy and pink robes with flower embroidery, leaving her glossy hair loose.

But truthfully our eyes quickly shifted over to her husband, who usually goes subtle in dark-colored garb. Today, however, the King of Bhutan got creative with what we can only describe as cowboy boots (although we're sure they're called something else in Bhutan).

The royal showed off his red and black kicks to the Japanese prime minister, Yoshihiko Noda, and his wife, Hitomi. The king and queen of Bhutan are currently being hosted in Japan as state guests... and resident fashion plates.

Check out Jigme Khesar's fancy footwear and his bride's lovely, tamer ensemble in the slideshow below!

The boots weren't Cowboy-inspired?! How rude! The boots are traditional Bhutan and the "fashion trend" existed before cowboys existed. Come on, people. I don't even want to think about what the author got paid for writing this article - in such a bad economy I thought jobs were competitive? At least hire someone who knows fashion when writing for the HUFF POST STYLE section??

It makes us look like the newbie, wild old west country that Bhutan probably perceives us as anyway. That we should have so much class as what is shown in these pictures!!

This is exactly what is wrong with the UN. This "state" of Bhutan is a member of the UN. In the USA, 47 of the 50 states has a larger population than Bhutan. So, maybe we should get 47 votes?

That means that China, then, with a population of 1.3 billion should have 200 or so votes? And India with 1.1 billion 180 or so votes? And Indonesia 100 votes?
Didn't think of it, did you?

Actually, Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal have a long history of that sort of contrasting leather cut-work and applique. You see it more often in felt garments. That shape is also sort of a Westernized version of the native shoe shape.

So, rather than drawing on "cowboy" boot tradition.... they are drawing on native traditions.

Ethnocentrism and Ignorance. Granted.... Himalayan dress is not exactly common knowledge, but it makes for an article to assume only Western-Cowboy attire has a tradition of leather applique and cut-work.... and boots. BTW... that tradition derives from Islamic traditions via Moorish Spain's horsemen to Mexico's vaqueros and caballeros to the US Southwest and American Cowboys.

I used to know a Peruvian lady who would not allow her son to wear cowboy boots becasue they were Mexican. She never saw the cowboy boot as a piece of Americana.

The real non-Bhutanese detail in those boots was the fact that they had heavy soles and heels... and probably left and right foot.

However, this is probably more a case of trying to get more hits for the webpage, thus more advertizing revenue. The more they can sensationalize or skew the title to get people to click on the article, the more money rolls in.

For example, "Elderly BC Couple Missing 3 Weeks" when the more correct title woudl have been "Elderly BC Couple Found Safe After 3 Weeks."

The king should remove those boots and take a Bhutan lighter to them. Is he trying to alienate the Bhutanese Crips?

Someone needs to send to HP a pair of cowboy boots so they will know what they are talking about. As a general rule cowboy boots are less than knee high, have pointed toes, high heels and visible pull-up straps. The pointed toes and high heels were the defining elements about the boots because the pointed toes helped them get their feet into the stirrups quickly and easily and the high heels kept their feet from going thru the stirrup thus trapping their feet while on a working, half wild mustang.
