'Mad Men' Will End In Present Day With Old Don Draper: Matthew Weiner

Mad Men

Posted: 11/15/11 06:23 AM ET

Season five of "Mad Men" will premiere in March, 2012, months after the usual start date of previous seasons. That seemingly drastic change, however, doesn't come close to the time shift series creator Matthew Weiner has in mind for the finale.

Weiner, the Emmy-winning brain behind the 60s-set New York advertising drama, recently sat down with Grantland.com to talk about both his personal journey and the one the show has taken from fledgling first season on AMC to cable powerhouse. Following intense negotiations with the network, Weiner agreed to create three more seasons of the Jon Hamm-starring hit, which would see a series finale come at the end of the seventh season. That last episode, he said, would provide more than just a retrospective on the show's history.

"I do know how the whole show ends," he told the site. "It came to me in the middle of last season. I always felt like it would be the experience of human life. And human life has a destination. It doesn't mean Don's gonna die. What I'm looking for, and how I hope to end the show, is like ... It's 2011. Don Draper would be 84 right now. I want to leave the show in a place where you have an idea of what it meant and how it's related to you."

To see Don Draper, still working and trying to sell digital ad space, based on laser-targeted focus group and audience segmentation, would truly be a sight to behold. Of course, one gets the feeling that Weiner is more interested in looking at how the Jon Hamm-portrayed character would have handled the coming decades and changes in his life, not technological changes in his industry.

But it's not just Don's arc that concerns Weiner; both the seventh season expiration date, as well as the setting he intends for it, are also opportunities for him to reflect on the job he did with the show, as well as go out on his own terms. Just like one certain little band out of Liverpool did over forty years ago.

"It's a very tall order, but I always talk about 'Abbey Road,'" he said, referring of course to the final album The Beatles recorded together (though "Let It Be" would be released after "Abbey Road"). What's the song at the end of Abbey Road? It's called 'The End.' There is a culmination of an experience of people working at their highest level."

Given that the series won its fourth straight Best Drama Emmy, Weiner certainly is on pace to end on top.

It will end with Don who has become more and more confused - shuffling into an Occupy camp - with flashbacks to some of his free love moments. We are left wondering if he'll ever find his way back out, if he's really lost his mind, or if Occupy is where he truly wants to be.

Don Draper when he is 84 in present day?

They are going to have to have a marathon before the new season. Not just for new viewers but to remind us what the hell was going on when last we viewed!

I'm guessing Roger Sterling won't be alive in that final episode. If he makes it past this season, he'll be lucky.

Actually, 'Her Majesty' is the last track on Abbey Road... ending in understatement and a cut-off note.

But, who's counting? Bring us more Mad Men please!

I would love to see Don Draper when he is 84 years old. Matthew Weiner has a point when he says that we can relate to Mad Men in 2011. http://www.hbomax.tv/hbo-la/mad-men. Thanks for a great read.

the song at the end of abbey road is actually "her majesty". don't flame me trolls - the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Don dies of liver cancer at the age of 62.

The show will end with a group of protestors bashing his head in for being a capitalist. And a great one at that. Despite his womanizing, Don's character is exceptional. I fell in love when he stood up for that smaller airline, that he gave his word to. To me, that is what a real capitalist, and man of honor would do. If only our present business leaders followed that example.

The words capitalist and honor in the same sentence, wow, that is an achievement. But then again if you can convince the population that rigging the system is capitalism and capitalism equals democracy, then all things are possible.

Didn't you take U.S. Government in any grade in the public school system? Capitalism is one of the concepts on which this country is founded. You know...free enterprise system, the constitutional right to have the freedom to start your own business and build it up to be successful? There are many, many people who are honorable in their business life and as well in their personal life. Striving to be successful at what you love to do is one thing that freedom and honor are about. By the way, I am a liberal democrat...just older and wiser.

The show ends with Don selling cars at dealership in Florida, playing the horses, and still dazzling the occasional cocktail waitress.

No, Don reveals that he's been fronting all along and he's actually gay. He finally comes out of the closet and moves to Key West, where he finds a bathhouse that caters to older queens and he lives out his golden years in the sauna and baths having steamy sex with many older men, and spending his millions on spa treatments, pedicures, and clothing.

no, no, no. He'd probably flock to San Fran to be a leader in gay ad sales.

Now I know I definitely need to start watching Mad Men on Netflix. I've been meaning to for a while, but I have a reason to catch up so I can watch when the next season premieres.

You really should! I did that this past year & absolutely fell in love with the show. (Did the same thing with Lost & now, I'm watching Rescue Me) It's a great way to watch-when you want & how much, plus NO COMMERCIALS! (Sorry, Don) The only downside is, after you've finished, I think the withdrawal is a little more intense! Anyway, it's an almost perfect show, so enjoy! Only four more months until March....
P.S. I think Matthew Weiner's idea is a good one. Sooooo many possibilities with that scenario!

I wanted "Lost" to end with the cast desperately trying to find their way out of their island exile, climbing the mountains and hacking their way through the jungle, only to reach a mountain clearing -- and laid out before them, as they stare dumbfounded from their location on Tantalus Heights, is the city of Honolulu, with Bobby and Pamela Ewing standing next to them, saying that it was really all a dream.

I just finished watching all of it on netflix and it was very good. I had to fast forward several times to avoid bored scenes.

This is the best show on television, but I don't want it's storyline to progress too far into the future. A major part of it's appeal & escapism is that it depicts the way the world was before political correctness. I say end it around 1977, with Don sporting a Mike Brady perm, having a drink & reading a letter from Sally saying she's run off with Peter Frampton..

That will only work if he's wearing a polyester leisure suit and listening to the Bee Gees' "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack on an 8-track.

The show will go into its time warp last season. That would be interesting to see 60's into the 70's into the 80's then 90's to present day especially in concerns with the civil rights, woman and gay rights, how they handle woman's lib, the emergence of women and African Americans into top positions, like to see Peggy's transformation. Will she have it all family and her own company?

I almost had a heart attack!! My computer was taking forever to load this story and I thought it was about the series ending this season! Thank God that isn't the case! Best show on TV and I can't wait for it to start again.

Well, if they keep waiting 20 months between seasons, it won't end until 2019.
10:44 PM on 01/04/2012
I agree wholeheartedly. It was very disappointing, frustrating and not good tv business to have the public wait for an anticipated season within a normal time frame. I'm surprised people are still interested.

He could walk out of a witness box doing a monologue and then cut to him in a nondescript ranch house where he's in the witness protection program all Goodfellas style. OR something epic like that.
