Tim Tebow Jesus Jerseys Created By Denver Broncos Fans Cause Controversy (POLL)

Tebow Jesus

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/15/11 07:05 PM ET Updated: 11/21/11 07:00 PM ET

Fans of Denver Broncos' quarterback Tim Tebow have created custom jerseys that feature the name "Jesus" displayed above Tebow's number, according to KTVQ.

While some say the shirts are simply a way to honor the proudly Christian player, others are speaking out against the divine comparison.

"It's making Tebow out to be a god instead of an athlete," one person told the Christian Post. "I'm happy he's a Christian and isn't afraid to demonstrate that, but for fans to hold him up in such high regard, perhaps comparing him to Jesus, is going too far."

But in a recent post on Cafe Mom's "The Stir," blogger Jacqueline Burtargues that the shirts are harmless:

"I know Tim Tebow fans are loyal with a capital ... who am I kidding, they're LOYAL in all caps. So I guess if you're a true Tebow supporter, altering the jersey of the NFL quarterback for the Broncos to read "Jesus" instead of "Tebow," wouldn't seem over-the-top. Particularly since the QB is so emphatically Christian..."

Apparently, the jerseys have been around since as long ago as this summer, according to Larry Brown Sports, who have no reservations in their support of the Jesus jerseys:

Tim Tebow is the golden child. The chosen one. He is Jesus in cleats and he's waiting for his lord and savior to put down his headset and congratulate him... In fact, if I were to purchase a Tebow jersey, I most assuredly would get one that says "Jesus" on the back too.

While the quarterback is still choosing to wear his given name on the back of his jersey, Tebow has never been one to shy away from making his religious beliefs known.

Earlier this year, the former University of Florida player knelt in prayer on the field, unintentionally starting a new trend and giving birth to an internet phenomenon known as "Tebowing."

In 2010, Tebow appeared with his mother in a "Focus On The Family" television commercial aired during the Super Bowl. As a quarterback for the Gators, he was known to inscribe Bible passages on his eye black.

Still, the phenomenon of Jesus on Tebow's jersey is troubling for some observers of the role of religion in sports. "The appearance of the name "Jesus" on the nameplate of a Broncos no. 15 jersey clearly continues -- escalates, really -- the ongoing deification of Tim Tebow," wrote Tom Krattenmaker, author of Onward Christian Athletes in an email to The Huffington Post. "These jerseys amount to a trivialization of the Christian faith that ought to disturb serious Christians. I hope Tebow insists on a product recall."

So was this jersey just bound to happen? Share your thoughts in the poll or leave a comment below.

What do you think of the Tim Tebow 'Jesus' Jersey?

It's a great idea.

The comparison doesn't sit well with me.

It's not a big deal.

I'd wear one too just to get them used to it and I'm not a Bronco's fan. People just like to complain and if it's about Christianity, they just can't get enough of it can't they. God bless their little hearts.

I think it is okay with people expressing their religion! its crazy we are in 2012, everyone expresses their needs and wants and when a Christian does everyone raises eyebrows. What is this world coming too? I don't know if I'm right, but this is my opinion.

God Bless :)

I guess some people think killing dogs, beating the wives, getting caught with drugs, DUI's are more moral things to do as good examples for our kids.

IMHO being a Christian is hard, not easy. The virtues of eschewing hatred, forgiveness, charity and humility are characteristics that must be cultivated in spite of the cultural majority. It's so much easier to just go to church, look down your nose at the approved list of untouchables and buy a tacky t-shirt. That fan will probably sell a million of them.

I suppose it is how you want to view this. Some could say that "Jesus" on the back of a Tebow jersey is a claim to him being Jesus. Or, and more likely, I view it as what team Tebow is on. Tebow proudly plays for Jesus and openly shares his love for our Lord. We can take anything out of context and make it be something it is not intended to be. If I could choose one name in all the world to have on the back of my jersey that was going to be viewed by millions of people all over the world. I would want my Lord and Savior's name where all could see. God does have a sense of humor, and if this is His way of drawing interest to Himself. His way of getting into the homes and hearts across America on a Sunday afternoon-then great! In America as a whole, we spend more time and money on our sports than we do our churches and in the growth of God's Kingdom. I don't see it as offensive he is obviously not a Christian in the closet, or a Christian only from 9a.m.-11a.m. on Sunday mornings... Tebow is living out his faith and being a strong role model for our youth. If you love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, and soul-then share your faith and honor God in the process.

They always said God has a sense of humor. Like idiots, he must love them. He sure made a lot of them.

BlueZoo: He said himself he knows God doesn't 'care' about football. He tells about God because He loves Him so much. I don't see how that is wrong or 'appalling' at all.

This guy's my hero.

Matthew 6:5-15
New International Version (NIV)

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you [unless you are on national television and wearing shoulder pads]. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one [and please give us a rally in the fourth quarter].’
14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

That's a good point but the pendulum has swung the other directions. NO BODY PRAYS. In prayer you don't have to ask for something. Sometimes it's good to just say thanks, big G, I love you too.
