MANHATTAN -- Churches around the borough were opening their doors Tuesday night to Occupy Wall Street protesters -- who were left without a place to sleep after police cleared out Zuccotti Park hours earlier.

Among those taking in the anti-greed protesters, who first established a camp in Lower Manhattan on Sept. 17, was Middle Collegiate Church in the East Village, which said Tuesday night it could accommodate about 75 protesters.

Hurray for the churches. Maybe Jesus' actual message hasn't been completely lost in the dogma that many churches seem mired in.

So the churches are opening their doors to protesters. Have they been doing the same for the homeless who have been dragging in the trenches long before these protesters? Double standards? However, I'm glad these REAL churches are offering this kind-hearted refuge. Now, if only I could persuade the spanking new Omni Dallas Hotel to open their doors to Dallas homeless on Christmas Eve of this year. My personal charity, the 'ANGELIC CHRISTMAS CRUSADE,' has been trying to book 15 rooms at this hotel to give, free of charge, to 15 homeless couples with children as a very special Christmas gift. However, this SCROOGE hotel refuses to take our payment and reserve these rooms for us on December 24th. It's not only pathetic but BIZARRE that this 1,000 room hotel is discriminating against my charity and my homeless group. Another hotel in Dallas lodges homeless on Christmas Eve with no problems but I guess the Omni only caters to that 1% of society that doesn't test their Christian love, for their fellowman, on Christmas Eve.

Fanned and faved. Bless you for your efforts. I am not surprised though. That hotel wouldn't want their rich guests seeing HOMELESS in their hotel. Disgusting. I have been homeless myself and know how hard it is to be a single homeless person, let alone a homeless couple with kids...especially at Christmas. Blessings to that other Dallas hotel for lodging people on Christmas Eve.

The 1%, epsecially those who consider themselves Christian (I am not but remember the story from my childhood), another homeless couple could only find shelter in a stable so the woman could give birth. Their names were Jesus and Mary and the baby born that night was Jesus

Though I'm an Atheist, and generally not a fan of Religion, this is one area i feel that SOME churches and religious folk get right, this is a fantastic thing to do, and thank you to these churches who are doing something that many have strayed from, helping.

The churches are just practicing what they preach, unlike Pat Robertson.

True. But quite a few churches aren't holding up the side so I am giving kudos to those who are. Sadly I doubt any eastern orthodox churches are...my former faith...and it is disappointing and depressing to see how divorced from the real world that church is.

Acts 4:32-37
New International Version (NIV)

The Believers Share Their Possessions
32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

Problem is that Christians have not tended to practice it for over 1600 years.

I wonder how many glittery "mega-churches" would take these folks in?
It's nice to know there are still some genuine Christians out there.

Do you always look for something negative in everything? I am not a church goer , more of an atheist actually, but when I see good deeds done by people ,regardless whether they are people of faith or ' faithless ' I would acknowledge the goodness in them. I have done many volounteer/charitable works during my summer breaks while I was in high school and now I am in college without expecting any thing in return. No I do not consider myself better than others, its just my way of saying Thank you for the blessings I got in my life. Blessings like having loving parents, supportive friends, good health, comfortable living, good education etc etc,, Why must there be a price tag to something good done by others? Are you that jaded and negative to pass judgment on others motives all the time ? In this instance I took my hat off for what these churches did , they are doing what they are supposed to do. .

I understand giving but what churches do comes with a price tag and promoting membership isn't a good thing it's self serving. It's not charity if there's a payback or an expectation of loyalty to the very people giving you the hand out.” Religious organizations don’t give freely at the very least you are subjected to attempts to convert in the hope of improving membership, wealth and power of the church.
Be grateful, be charitible... but don't be so blind as to see that Churches are a business. I don't pass judgement on Charities that help people without expecting a give back. Maybe you're too jaded to see the difference between doing good for goodness sake and doing good for reward or to avoid punishment.

Sweelilthing...You have been reading the Bible and can quote it quite well. That is exactly what the Bible says. Doing a good deed so as to obtain some reward is self serving. That is why "Salvation" is a free gift. One doesn't have to follow rules and regulation to obtain their free trip to "Heaven." The pass is already in their pocket. The Bible also admonishes people to not judge other people, especially for political gain, but to give as "God" gives to them, freely.
What you don't understand is that "churches" are buildings or a group of people and are not alive in themselves and cannot do anything. That is called anthropormorphism; giving teliological reasoning to inanimate objects. We are really talking about real people here, fellow Americans. I don't know what is in the minds of all of these real people since I am not a god, so I will reserve judgement and assume that they are doing this out of the kindness of their hearts. Prove to me that these are evil demonic people and I will go along with you. You know, innocent until proven guilty.

The privatly owned food kitchens, privatly owned church's, are you libs and dems not getthing this yet because they are the one's helping you, not your government. It's called private sector and free market, not state or federal runned, got it?

Police destroyed the communally run kitchens. How do you arrive at privately run churches? The church is traditionally community operated and owned by God.
Is God a corporation?
05:50 AM on 11/17/2011
Free market? Where did it say the church was charging? Pivatly owned food kitchens? You mean the ones that the local govenments have closed down? You Libs and Dems? Do you think a crowd that size, and growing, and protests across the country are only Libs and Dems? Do you really beleive that?

Turn of Fox and watch other stations, seveal of them, read what news reporters say, and not blogs from people with an agenda. Get a little education and see what is really happening.

What is really happening is that people are religiously Believing what they hear on MSNBC and FOX rather than researching anything themselves. MSNBC and FOX are entertainment channels catering to their customers for profit (just like every other channel on TV and every blog on the Internet). People don't need to get an education. People need to use their own minds and research everything from the "source." Everyone has an agenda. Not just "THEM" or "THOSE PEOPLE" that disagree with "ME."

Helping those in need, either physically or spiritually is why we need to have churches. This is why they are non-profit.

No they don't. Statistically speaking, conservatives are more religious than liberals but many liberals are also religious. Many priests I know are quite liberal. Jesus' teachings are quite liberal too.
