Joseph Gordon-Levitt On Occupy Wall Street, Filming The Protests & The Web

When the massive production caravan hauling "The Dark Knight Rises" descended upon lower Manhattan last month, there was speculation that the Batman epic's director, Christopher Nolan, would work to somehow incorporate the Occupy Wall Street protesters into his film. And while that didn't quite come to pass, one of the movie's stars decided to take a camera down to Zuccotti Park and explore the scene on his own.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's timing couldn't have been any better.

As it turned out, the 30-year old star found himself Tuesday in the thick of the volatile struggle between protestors and the New York Police Department, which raided the park earlier in the morning and cleaned out the nearly-two-month-old makeshift tent city. Gordon-Levitt ended up shooting about three hours worth of footage at the scene, he told The Huffington Post Tuesday night at the premiere of "50/50" co-star Bryce Dallas Howard's new short film for Canon’s “Project Imagin8ion”. Despite the fevered pitch at the protest sites, he was very encouraged by what he saw.

"I had a lot of long conversations with all sorts of people -- kids, older people, some cops -- I talked to some people who look really rebellious, I talked to some people who were wearing a suit," the star said. "I talked to all sorts of people and everyone's just feeling really positive and optimistic. They look around and they see people who are on the same page, and they're not going to just sit around and say, 'Oh, there's nothing I can do,' and it's reassuring, it's exciting."

He said he was moved in particular by the call and response public address system dubbed the people's mic by protesters. It was "beautiful to see," he said.

It's no surprise that the makeshift open platform appeals to Gordon-Levitt, who runs an online collaborative production company, HitRecord. Just getting the message out, he said, was a major improvement over his last round of First Amendment-flexing pavement pounding.

"You know, when I was like, in college say, I remember when in 2003, when the United States started bombing Iraq, and we marched in protest, and no one gave a fuck man. No one paid attention; no one wanted to talk about it," he remembered, growing animated. "Now, for various reasons, I guess because partially things have gotten so bad and I think partially because of the Occupy movement, it's become a topic of conversation and people are willing to talk about it."

Check out Gordon-Levitt's initial post about the experience on his website.

Thought Levitt had something important and useful to say....Guess not....Only the usual....One more perfunctory, shallow audition for relevance, holly-weird style.

I actually thought about seeing his next film(s) but just like Di caprio's unneeded soap-boxing, I'm not interested in their populist political commentary on things they no nothing of. Please Stop stage performing...Get a real life...Live in the unprotected world of day to day reality....and for goodness sake SHUT UP and ACT!!!

Did he happen to see the dozens of hypodermic needles these drug induced "protestors" had that were raided by the police? It's one thing to protest for what you believe in, whether it is misguided or not, it's another thing to camp out on private property and shoot up while thinly veiling that by saying you want the rich to give you money. It's ridiculous, and mayor bloomberg is at fault. He needed to squash this crazy movement that is keeping merchants from selling their goods and services, and keeping tax paying, working residents from sleeping at night from the drums they are banging. Look at the footage of the raid, these people look and sound insane. So another left wing hollywood type can be "encouraged" by what he saw, but he doesn't camp out with them nor does he live in that neighborhood, shame on him.

Opinion's vary on OWS, but this isn't a story. This sounds more like a field trip arranged to make a star (one whom I have never heard of) feel better about himself. How long was he there, an hour?

Apparently, the two of you have lived in a cave for the past 15 or 20 years.

Given the user name "Bush Guy", that's hardly surprising.

There is a contradiction between our laws and justice.
It is interesting how so many people are more interested in bashing the Occupy movement or passively dismissing it. There is no doubt that thousands of people coming together, organizing duties, holding meetings, and conducting votes has not yielded the unprecedented change that this country needs. But this movement has disrupted the normal political discourse, which is always about issues that are easy to pit person against person, because they are often so far removed from the challenges the average person must tackle daily.

I have a lot of faith in the possible. And I think this movement will change, as it will have to continue being a movement. The crack downs by these local governments heave left a deep impression in the minds of people. Even those who are no at the "occupation" sites are aware the contradictory actions of governments who are acting out against those who advocate the government engage in the practice social justice. Surely, people are aware that there is a contradiction when those who would engage in financial practices that would ruin many lives, those who disrespect their workers with low wages, and those who violate safety regulations in mines and cause the deaths of hard working people, are not punished. And yet those who advocate for redress of the grievances so many have are beaten, shot, at, exposed to pepper spray and tear gas. The criminal is exalted and just is criminalized....

I think he seems as clear as the OWS folks in their objectives. DUH

Love JGL, love him even more now. He honestly should make that footage into a documentary and release it immediately. I'd pay to see it.
07:44 AM on 11/17/2011
Do you think the footage will include the dozens of hypodermic needles they found when they cleaned out the park? Yeah. Go pay to see it. Good luck with that.

1. Show me your proof of that.
2. Is there no chance those were from diabetics?
3. Every protest has bad apples who do not represent the entire thing.

"everyone's feeling really positive and optimistic"...Such a shame this wealthy celebrity didn't talk to the street vendors, the store owners, and their employees who have lost their jobs and incomes due to these protests. I wonder how "positive and optimistic" they feel? With all the rhetoric from the OWS movement, it's odd that no one who claims to speak for the movement has expressed any regret for the suffering they've caused these working class people.
06:21 AM on 11/17/2011
Of course they haven't expressed regret, or empathy in any way, for the suffering they've caused honest working people who run businesses in the area or work for them. Let's not even get into the people who live in the area with their children who were subjected daily to drum beating that made it hard to put their kids to bed. And there's the stench of unmanaged human waste and pot smoke. Great environement for kids...not.
The private owners of the park could've had the protesters evicted the first day they pitched a tent. But they didn't. You won't see the protesters thanking them for that.
No, now you see the protesters outraged that they don't get the right that 100% of us don't get: the right to camp in areas where camping is not allowed and the right to menacingly infringe on the businesses and residents who live there.

I couldn't agree more RedIvy! Well said. If I hadn't already fanned ya, I'd fan ya again!
07:47 AM on 11/17/2011
He also didn't add that these people are bringing disease to the area, spreading some sort of respiratory virus, and he didn't add on top of what you said that they are shooting up as the police found dozens of hypodermic needles. There have been rapes reported under those tarps. This is just another excuse for people who don't want to work to have a voice while the taxpaying citizens are criminalized for wanting them out of there. There is no justice apparently for hard working people. Mayor Bloomberg is at fault. He is weak. You think Guiliani would have allowed this crap to go on, on private property no less. Yeah right.

Americans blame the federal government more for the nation's economic plight than they do the primary target of the Occupy Wall Street protests --- big financial institutions. If you don't know why people are protesting on wall street, this article gives a very good explanation on it.
