Obama-Allied Group Launches Supercommittee Ad Campaign Targeting GOPers

Scott Brown

First Posted: 11/16/11 09:57 AM ET Updated: 11/16/11 09:59 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- In a reflection of how close the supercommittee is getting to its do or die moment, a Democratic-allied group is launching a series of television ads pressuring Republicans not to cut Medicare or Medicaid as part of any deficit reduction proposal.

The spots, put together by the Obama-allied Americans United for Change, are targeting Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) and Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.) -- who are all running for Senate seats in 2012. They will air from Wednesday evening through the end of the week in several large media markets in those Senators home states: Boston; Reno, Nev.; and Billings and Missoula, Mont.

While the scripts of the ads don't directly mention the supercommittee -- which is being asked to report out $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction recommendations by November 23 -- an official with the group confirmed that the spots were being aired in hopes of pre-framing the committee's work. These are the first television ads that AUC had run on the committee.

Not exactly the most visually stimulating videos, the ads warn lawmakers that they will pay a political price for cutting Medicare or Medicaid. That may prove to be popular politics -- certainly, polls show that voters want the two health care programs protected -- but the notion that cuts won't ultimately be persued is highly unlikely. Aides on the Hill from both political parties, have long agreed that there is room to trim down Medicare's provider-side components. Reforms to Medicaid, whether in the form of decreased help to the states or something more structural, have also been discussed. And if the committee remains deadlocked, Medicare remains on the chopping block, as one of the victims of the so-called trigger enforcement mechanism.

Somehow medicare will be eliminated entirely because its a socialist infestation on the government.

No, that's not my point of view. I believe it is the Democratic point of view and Republicans use different language, 'satanic' perhaps.

This ad is on point, because everyone that is on medicare or medicaid will notice the cuts and will blame the deaths that result on Republicans mostly. But the reality is that it doesn't matter. because marketing is more powerful than actual reasons, And Republicans have the money, Corporations are free to use limitless spending to destroy medicare. You think heath insurers don't want Grandma's money too?

It will be sold to you, privatization of medicare, as far superior, preserving freedom of choice and ensuring the very best medical care! (that you can afford). And it doesn't matter who you vote for.

I am 45 and I am certain by the time I am 70 there will be NO Social Security or medicare,or medicaid. You know I am right, you're afraid to acknowledge it ! Because all of you can be marketed to to vote against your own interest!

Good for you the Obama Administration. In reality though it is not going to too many people to poke through the GTOP campaign. The GTOP candidates are so dumb it is easy to see right through them.

I am an English guy who follows your political scene with interest. I am glad that the Democrats are starting a fight back against the T/Republicans, the Democrats are the only hope for the average American citizen who needs help with their medical care.

And HP's infatuation with Brown continues. If you didn't know any better, from HP's coverage you would think he is the most powerful member of the Senate, rather than the junior Senator from Massachusetts. Meanwhile Kerry gets a free pass for producing close to nothing for 26 years.

Are the people ever going to be told about Brown's part in enabling the fleecing of america by Wall St.? He should be indicted for his part in removing any restrictions put in place under the "Volker Rule" that was to prevent the big banks from making speculative investments with the people's money. He did Wall St. a huge favor, took in a ton of cash from Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, etc..and screwed all the rest of us. And he's running for re-election against E. Warren, with the banks blessings to prevent the consumers from having a voice.

So when the committee goes 'Big' and the Democrats agree to cuts in Medicare and Republicans agree to raising revenues, will this ad still be run?

What, ever, will Moveon.org do?

Very good ad. No need to make the video "stimulating" We are already "stimulated" Now to the bare bones. Cut Medicare or Medicaid and we will cut you.
Instead cut the variety of loopholes for the rich.

Why cut services which ensure the health of citizens? All they have to do is make the wealthy pay their fair share. It's not exactly rocket science. And the majority of US Citizens know it. I wonder how long it'll take for the citizens to make their will heard, and acted upon. Looks to me like the Republicans are painting themselves into a corner.

"Democratic-allied group is launching a series of television ads pressuring Republicans not to cut Medicare or Medicaid as part of any deficit reduction proposal."

Where were the ads asking the Democrats not to cut Medicare by $500 BILLION during the HCR bribes?

Bush republican'ts destroyed the economy and then blocked fixes.
They propose nothing different than the failed Bush policies that got us into the mess.

If America wants to avoid 4 more years of this foolishness, we need to vote republican'ts out of the house and senate in large numbers, so we can finally get our country back on track.

We have already tried the republican't way and it failed miserably.

These ads are funded by our bloated medical and drug industries, the recipients of Medicare and Medicaid. __ They are a note from hospitals: keep paying whatever we demand or Granny dies!
