Jonathan Gruber, M.I.T. Economist, Hits Mitt Romney Over Obama Health Care Law

Obama Health Care Law Mitt Romney Jonathan Gruber

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/16/2011 3:47 pm Updated: 11/17/2011 8:18 am

Jonathan Gruber, an M.I.T. economist hired by Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to help craft health care reform, sharply criticized the Republican presidential candidate for distinguishing between his bill and President Barack Obama's in an interview with Capital New York published Wednesday.

"They're the same f***ing bill. He [Romney] just can't have his cake and eat it too," Gruber said. "He can try to draw distinctions and stuff, but he's just lying. The only big difference is he didn't have to pay for his. Because the federal government paid for it. Where at the federal level, we have to pay for it, so we have to raise taxes."

The Huffington Post's Andrea Stone reported in May that Gruber called Romney's opposition to the health care law the president signed "largely political." Gruber also said Romney was "subtly hypocritical" and "misleading" for suggesting that if Massachusetts could devise its own health care law, then other states should be allowed to develop their own plans.

The health care bill Romney signed and the Affordable Care Act signed by Obama have substantial similarities. Both have individual and employer mandates and subsidies, establish health insurance exchanges, allow young adults to stay on their parents' insurance and prohibit insurers from denying people based on pre-existing conditions.

Romney has defended the law he signed but said that states should be able to develop their own health care laws. He favors repealing the health care law the president signed into law.

Gruber is a Democrat, and told The New Yorker that Romney never asked him about his political views. He also recalled that Romney argued for the individual mandate since it would eliminate the "free rider" problem of uninsured patients seeking care at emergency rooms. The White House also contacted Gruber to do the economic modeling for Obama's plan.

In the interview with Capital New York, Gruber also expressed frustration that the Supreme Court might decide the fate of health care on "political grounds." "It's very disturbing," he said. The Huffington Post's Mike Sacks reported that the high court is likely to make a decision on the constitutionality of the individual mandate at the end of June 2012.

----------------------------------------------------->

So it's okay for the federal government to pay for something that the states do with taxpayer, but it's not okay for the federal government to pay for something that the federal government does that will be implemented in the states with taxpayer money - even when they are the same things?

Your use of states' rights in this instance is a crock. Your flip flop is a matter of symantics only for the purpose of politics.

It makes you a liar.

To: GOP Candidate Mitt Romney Healthcare Reform

Please never relegate Healthcare to States for they will violate laws as they did Welfare Reform Bill 1996 where in April 21,1998 Chronicle it states 6 counties Welfare is 3 months. Los Angeles 5 months. Sacramento 3 months. Federal law for Welfare stay is 5 years and 20% longer if job problems. $200 to $300 only. Dr. Elliot Liebow'93 says,"Meager money given to Welfare poor."
Furthermore, I quit many evil jobs and on GA you got check twice a
month of $35.00 in San Francisco. Companies in SF Chronicle newspaper did not give name and addresses and couldn't afford to pay for job faxes.
Sfc companies made you pay for
restrooms (signs saying restrooms for customers only) and I needed 20 companies hiring a month to stay on Welfare. I have
manners and not going to go to
bathroom on street thus for years I
could not go job seeking and trapped!!! Nobody helped! Ever hear this discussed? Couldn't leave job resumes at companies. It was humane to care for Gay people in Aids crisis and same should be for middle ckass and poor. John Edward took corrupt medical people to Court for malpractice and Cowardly men won't do this now. In Matthew 13 Wheat and Weeds Jesus warns His disciples to not anticipate God's final judgment by an exclusion of sinners from Kingdom. Now it
consists of good and bad.

Added fact. If you Google cities' food and shelter websites you will see scarce food, shelter resources. For instance Google SF Free Eats chart and you will see only Glide Church gives 3 meals a day. Some other churches just lunch. Several other places are a far distance. If Google Ca Berkeley,Oakland you will see every 2nd to 3rd Sunday or Thursday one meal a month.Florida no Welfare and shorttime shelters. Michael Manning owner of main
food,shelter website says long waiting
lists at shelters and Miami Florida
shelters usually 3 days and 2 weeks. homelessshelterdirectory.org. My 1997 scarce food, shelter, and job
Report shelters in Miami 3weeks back

Health Care starts at birth, and continues throughout life. To deny health care is a right, is to deny life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

The AMA supports a single payer national health care plan. An ounce of prevention, is worth a pound of care.

"Health Care starts at birth, and continues throughout life. To deny health care is a right, is to deny life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

The fact of the matter is it's not a right. You don't have the right to force someone to do something for you that they don't want to do. That's why health care is not a right.. it would be inconsistent with liberty and the pursuit of happiness. While you certainly do have a right to your life you cannot force someone to help you.

With that being said.. I'm sure that everyone will be helped at one point or another.. and it would be better in a free-market system where people actually value their health and know that there are risks to being a risk taker.

"We are either a great nation, or we will join the other nations in the graveyard of history."

This empire is going into the graveyard of history.. and quickly.

"I'm sure that everyone will be helped at one point or another..."

--What possible grounds could you have for believing that? It's not true now, it's never been true, and it will never be true unless there is a systematic attempt to make it so.

"...and it would be better in a free-market system where people actually value their health and know that there are risks to being a risk taker."

--I'm sorry, but that's just an absurd statement. Read it again.

If you wanted compassion shown to you to live would you turn it down? I think not. I don't care if one is a Democrat, Republican, Independent, or any other label ..... why is it when someone changes their mind they are only a flip-flopper?

I've changed my mind on issues when presented with new information not available at the time of my first stance. I've changed my mind when a better persuaded argument has been presented. I have also changed my mind on issues simply because my philosphies have changed. I do not by any stretch feel I am a flip-flopper. I know I am progressing.

Changing your mind, your beliefs and your worldview in light of new information, new experiences and new discoveries is the hallmark of rational enlightenment. It is both the process and the goal of acquiring wisdom.

Rejecting sound ideas and embracing ignorance and sophistry in an attempt to ingratiate oneself with masses, advance one's career and seek popularity is the hallmark of the demagogue, the sycophant and the toad.

Not according to Rasmussen, timber1647. 69 % are saying the feds have no business mandating the purchase of insurance.

Timber...I'm not arguing your point that the uninsured are taking advantage and causing us to pay for them showing up at ER's. I agree with you, and something should be done about it other than turning them away. The point I was trying to make is...the Supreme Court will decide whether it's CONSTITUTIONAL to MAKE people purchase insurance, or be taxed a certain amount if they refuse.

Yeah, but why not let the people vote it out ? 'U' kno' why ? because according to the polls, most people like it. Why is it that two judges,(no at all imparticial) vote it down for all of the U.S.A ?
By the way, one of the crocked judges wife has been publicly trying to get it repealed every since it became law.

Very good comment you made. I have posted the same thought that we do not need a paper or a law to save lives in an emergency or other healthcare matters. In a Democracy every person has Individual Rights and everyone is important. There is no privileged class. The Majority rule is Supreme not a Supreme Court of Gods of men who do not not even know a person's given situation. Does this pertain to our Military too no
universal Healthcare? Good
Healthcare for the people defends our
National Defense too since people
cannot be their best if they do not feel
secure. Devereaux'63 The Government of a Free Nation. Furthermore, the poor have shown me they are very Glad and Grateful and Thankful to receive compassionate help and assistance.
It made me so glad to
have helped them. Once I helped a
poor man on the street and later
when he saw me he gave me
Hamburger he was so thankful for my
past help. Others not poor would not
have even done that! I have seen the
poor pray at meals and they believe
in God and Jesus too. God is their
hope. The poor can be frozen by

Driving is a priviledge, not a right. Car insurance really is for the protection of other drivers, not you, and most states require you to carry some form of basic liability insurance if you drive a car.

Driving is a priviledge...you're right....if you own a car, even if it isn't financed, the state mandates that you have auto insurance.....even if you're financially well off enough to self insure......don't have it? You get a ticket if stopped.........

unless your fast and fat, your not hauling around 2 tons of steel at 70 mph..it's a whole different perspective. You can keep yourself healthy and no need health ins. You and your car can be hit by someone else and their car..HAs nothing to do with your health.
04:11 PM on 11/18/2011
Your analogy demonstrates exactly why a mandate is necessary. Say you are a fit and healthy person and never get sick. But say you are in a car accident caused by someone else - insurance law is tricky, and that other person's car insurance may not pay all of your medical bills that you may need down the road. In that case, you will in fact need health insurance, and if you pay for it yourself, you're just free-riding off everyone else when you need to see a doctor or go to the ER. The point is, just simply being fit and healthy doesn't automatically mean that you will not one day need health insurance. You never know what can happen.

So in your opinion, as well as the august professor's an approximately 80 page bill is the same as a 2000 page bill?
