Sacred Spaces At Occupy Protests (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 11/16/2011 4:47 pm Updated: 11/16/2011 4:47 pm

With cities cracking down on Occupy protests, it remains unclear what route the movement will take. Facing eviction (or already having experience it), demonstrators could benefit from a space to meditate. We've compiled photos of sacred spaces at Occupy sites around the world.

Having a soul does not require the existence of a supernatural being.

I might take you more seriously if you could at least spell Mr. Gandhi's name correctly.

Of course, saying Gandhi didn't believe in god is utterly laughable. He was a very devout Hindu who spoke and wrote about god very often. Indeed, he was murdered on his way to conducting his evening prayer ceremony.

Sacred or sacrÄre, means bones. Sacred architecture used the harmonic patterns of the body to create sacred space. I would suggest one's own body is the most sacred place, home second and earth third. These all share the same harmonies of design. These shapes reflect philosophies shared through out time, all meaning ONE as singular or collective. All that is sacred is harmonic with nature, as part of her. Beauty and rapture are experienced when the harmonies are sacred as architecture is frozen music and sound the original Source.
Seeing so many connect is sacred and hope for humanity is experienced in these human efforts.

Since it was religion (evangelical fundamentalist Christianity, to be specific) that brought us the Bush administration and the consequent ruination of our economy, the deregulation of everything for profit, two wars, and the demolishing of our Constitution, I think it behooves religion to stay out of the OWS protest. Otherwise, somebody might start to wonder how culpable religion is, with regard to our current problems, and why they aren't taxed.

I don't blame Bush alone, I blame conservatism and conservatives. They were/are the ruin of this country.

I call BS on any "sacred space." Magic is magic is magic. Look at all the wars still being raged because one group decides this space is 'sacred' even if you got there first. One of our guys died here (stealing your gold, but hey), so we claim this place for us. We pitched a tent here with a picture of a holy guy on it, so the heck with laws and everyone else, we declare it 'sacred' and no more rational discussion allowed.
Please.

I agree as well. "Sacred spaces" is just another form of separation. If something isn't a "sacred space" then what is it? Profane? Once this form of separation occurs we attach to much to it and will fight to protect it. Bodhiharma was famous for saying "when you see a Buddha on the raod kill him" No he didn't mean kill literally; it was more about destroying the attachments we have towards thing, in this case a Buddhists attachment to the Buddha.

There are not "sacred spaces" just spaces.

Actually is wasn't Bodhiharma that said that it was someone else; although the meaning is still the same.

"Sacred" means separated...something "set apart". A sacred space is just a space set apart for whatever.

look at all the killing and suffering that come from invaders deciding native land is NOT sacred. i got news for you, believing land is not sacred has caused far more death and sorrow than believing it is.

The world is confused -- and the coming together of faiths to find that yoke of oneness is a good thing! And our Father in Heaven, I am sure, recognizes the heart at work seeking answers and a path to a more enlighten spiritual journey to the One Universal God.

I love this. It is beautiful. Different religious beliefs coalescing together as one. Praise God and I hope the people see that Jesus was with the people and not pro-business or pro-government.

So interfaith is good...so long as they all realize Jesus is the man? ;-)

Seems to me that W. Bush invoked Jesus when he walked into Iraq. The same way that Hitler did when he went after the Jews.

You think you're not going to pay? There's always a price with religion.
03:03 AM on 11/17/2011
You so right about religion about having to pay, let's take religion out of the world and have some faith instead, perhaps then we can end the senseless wars and hate...

Different Occupy Cities handle religious diversity in different ways. I am part of Occupy Birmingham. We simply look at the movement as an interfaith movement and leave religious disagreements outside. We acknowledge that we have members from many different faiths, and recognize that each faith has it's own beliefs. And we recognize the commonality of ALL faiths in helping us become better people and leave it at that.
