Amy Winehouse Wrote Third CD, Planned Supergroup

By MESFIN FEKADU   11/16/11 11:57 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK -- Amy Winehouse had written all the songs that were to appear on her third album. She even picked out song titles.

But music producer Salaam Remi said the soul singer, who died over the summer, was not rushing to release that new material, instead planning to drop a jazz album first with a "supergroup" including ?uestlove of the Roots.

"She had written down everything she wanted to do," Remi said Tuesday.

Only two of the tracks Winehouse wrote were recorded and appear on her compilation album, "Lioness: Hidden Treasures," out Dec. 5 in the United Kingdom, and a day later in America.

Winehouse died from accidental alcohol poisoning at age 27. Her body was found at her London home July 23.

Remi, who worked on the singer's two albums, "Frank" and "Back to Black," produced most of the upcoming CD, saying Winehouse was a perfectionist when it came to composing music.

"She was taking her time with it, and at the end of the day all of her songs are somewhat autobiographical, so she had to live through something, then get out of it and then look back at it to be able to write about it," he said.

"Who knows what will happen in the future with that," he said of the songs she penned.

Remi held a press listening for "Lioness" on Tuesday. The 12-track set features covers and stripped-sounding versions of released Winehouse songs, with some completed in one take.

Before her third album would come out, Remi said, Winehouse wanted to record with Roots drummer ?uestlove and saxophone player Soweta Kinch.

"There were a bunch of other names bouncing around," Remi said.

?uestlove did make the new album, though. He appears on the track "Half Time." There's also a song by an 18-year-old Winehouse, another about her ex-husband's infidelity and "Best Friend," which opens with the line: "I can't wait to get away from you."

Remi has produced for the Fuguees, Nas, Jazmine Sullivan and Nelly Furtado. He produced the song "Block Party" from TLC member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Winehouse sought him out after hearing the track. Remi says that Winehouse usually wrote songs while playing the guitar and that the new album sounds just as good as her critically acclaimed predecessors.

He also said he wanted to release new material from the late singer before others did so.

"Before somebody comes up with some weird song .... this is what it really is," he said. "This is the quality."

AS bad as her music was while she was alive, how much worse could it be after her death?

Good Idea of the Day: Record this album with the intended supergroup, then donate the proceeds to charity...and remember, you heard it here first.

sounds like Amy Winehouse channeled George Harrison. Hope it is but into loving, caring hands as George's Brainwash was.

I think if the songs were to be done they should look to Adele to sing them in tribute to Amy and maybe put the procedes towards alcohol and rug awarness programs or music scholarships. Adele has that same passion for that kind of old souled music and would do them justice.

I never have heard any Winehouse after 30 seconds of that trash she tried to drunken sing rehab, I flipped the station, that is the only song I ever heard her try to sing. I'm pretty sure I could sing better than that, and I couldn't hold a note if it was written in my hand. Let's put it this way I wouldn't be any worse. My question is who was she impersonating while trying to sing, that's what they sing like on SNL, and they're supposedly doing comedy, while impersonating someone?

I'm glad I don't listen to pop radio anymore, if I had to listen to another Whinehouse song, I'd rip my radio out of the dash and throw it out the window. Whinehouse is just as bad as rap, just noise, no music content there, just plain NOISE.

When I heard she died, the first thing I said was overdose, and man I was right, she overdosed on alcohol. How hard was that to believe? Not Very to me Either

Get over Amy. Her life and death were self-inflicted.

Nothing like a little empathy for addiction. If you have never fought it you will never understand it. Try having some compassion.
06:23 PM on 11/18/2011
People just dont understand
08:06 PM on 11/18/2011
Only she is to blame for her addictions. If she had just said NO the first time, maybe she'd still be around. Having compassion for an addict is being an enabler. You can offer help, but its up to them to want it and do it. Obviously, she didn't want sobriety bad enough or work at it hard enough.
06:20 PM on 11/18/2011
No one is saying it wasn't. If you heard her music though you can not deny her talent and the passion she put into the songs. people will miss her music and her but do have anger and saddness she did this to herself as its just sad and a shame her talent was lost due to her demons.

You call that talent and passion, she put more passion into a bottle of booze, that is NOT talent in any form. Rehab was the wrost piece of trash I have ever heard in my life, well next to rap.
02:23 PM on 11/18/2011
It's too bad she was surrounded by enemies, ...instead of friends.
02:19 PM on 11/18/2011
Well, you knew that would happen, didn't you?! Of course, & we will be shocked at al the profound & eerie insight she had & all the premonition referrences she had in the liyrics eluding to her untimely death, too, I'll bet!!! But then again with her drug & acohol intake, it would be impossible for her to think she could possibly live to see 30! She actually lived much longer than would be expected from the looks of most of the photos & videos of her.
01:34 PM on 11/18/2011
I'd like to know how the writer of this article can call her overdose "accidental".
04:09 PM on 11/18/2011
Sad little people that don't understand addiction.....lets see you drink to get drunk, not to die. After years of abuse your tolerance builds up and you have to drink so much to get drunk you black out and your BAC can get so high you poison yourself and utimatly die. Accidental means it was not a sucide you dolt.
