John Fox: Tim Tebow In A Regular Offense Would Be 'Screwed'

Tim Tebow John Fox

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/17/11 08:26 AM ET Updated: 11/17/11 08:26 AM ET

The Denver Broncos fortunes have changed ever since head coach John Fox replaced starting quarterback Kyle Orton with Tim Tebow during the second half of the team's Week 5 game against the San Diego Chargers. Although the Broncos ultimately lost that game to the Chargers, dropping their record to 1-4, the team has managed to win three of the ensuing four games with Tebow starting under center. While his hand appeared to be forced by the vociferous pro-Tebow faction of fans, the move has the team alive in the AFC West race.

Granted, these surging Broncos won't be confused with the undefeated Green Bay Packers any time soon. With run-first, throw-later Tebow at quarterback, the Broncos have employed an unorthodox game plan during their recent games. Even starting to run the option, they're currently ranked second in the league in rushing yards per game. This past Sunday against the Chiefs at Arrowhead, the Broncos ran the ball 55 times and Tebow completed just two passes (out of eight), but one of them happened to be a 57-yard touchdown to Eric Decker as Denver went on to win 17-10. In the team's previous win at Oakland, Tebow nearly ran for as many yards (118) as he recorded in the passing game (124).

If the wins keeping coming more frequently than the defeats, it seems unlikely that Fox, Tebow or the fans at Mile High will care that Tebow's bludgeoning pinball runs through the minefield of defensive lineman are not as aesthetically pleasing Aaron Rodgers' surgical airstrikes. After all, the NFL is no beauty contest. Winning ugly counts the same as the results generated by any pocket passing Picasso.

But what if, for the sake of arugment, the Broncos wanted to install a passing offense more in line with the rest of the league? What if they needed to generate quick points through the air because their defense suddenly wasn't playing so well? Judging from his comments on Tuesday, Fox isn't very confident that his quarterback could excel in such a situation.

"I mean, what the hell? You don't get points for style in this league. Let me tell you something: My man is really good in this offense. You know what I mean?" Fox said trying to explain their win over the Chiefs. "If we were trying to run a regular offense, he'd be screwed."

As if anyone hadn't yet discerned it, Fox also conceded that the staff had to "tweak" the offense when the switch to Tebow was made. On Thursday, Denver's tweaked offense will go to battle against the near-desperate New York Jets. With running back Knowshon Moreno out for the season and backup Willis McGahee possibly missing the game with a hamstring injury, Fox might have to change up the scheme again. Or, perhaps, Tebow can literally carry the load on his own.

Amazed that a college option/type Tebow offense is working. Never seen it really work in the pros. Fox/Elway must be amazed as well. But they just keep winning. Loved watching Ryan's reaction at being outplayed & outcoached.

The Dolphins used an option based offense a few years back, got them a 10-6 record IIRC.
The Defense and TT got it done last night. It was great watching Ryan lose.

Strange that the Jets went into a pass prevent defense against the Broncos' offense. What were they thinking? Not good coaching.Looked good on em

Tebow keeps winning. Huh. I guess Jesus IS a football fan. I would've thought he'd prefer baseball since a relief pitcher can SAVE.

I'm still laughing. While not a fan of Tebow, (more like who cares, he's not in my division), I was howling with laughter at the Jets. Its still funny. All week they've been saying that Tebow wanted to keep the game close. Or, that the Jets should watch out for late game heroics. And guess what? They allowed the game to remain close (Sanchez doesn't play to win, but not to lose) and they didn't stop Tebow from rushing through their line, KNOWING that he would be rushing through their lines. Tee-hee!

After watching the Jets play pass defence on the final drive (for some horrible reason) after their zone option defence shut the Broncos down all game and witnessing Mark Sanchez play an awful second half I have now decided that Mark Sanchez is officially my least favourite player in NFL history.

Move over Troy Aikman (I'm a 49ers fan), there's a new King for that Crown!

Mark has been around long enough to know what to do. Instead I hear excuse after excuse about his play. People are bashing Tebow, but they could just as easily bash Sanchez for the very same reasons. Only difference is Tebow wins.

Well I hearby relinquish my Tebow bashing days. Mark Sanchez had multiple opportunities to put this game out of reach and he played horribly (for the second week in a row might I add).

He is my new whipping boy.

To me the only thing that is screwed are us NFL fans for having to watching the 'option' offense in a Pro game..

This is a Gimmick just like Tebow is. You will not win a Super Bowl with this offense or Tebow EVER

For C-Sakes ... they drafted the man ... build an offense around him and quit worrying about the fact it is different than what other teams are doing. I'm really tired of the BS. The only reason the Broncos aren't cruising is because they've been too stubborn to use what they have the way it needs to be used. Tebow is a winner and has been ready to lead the Broncos from the get-go. Too bad the Broncos didn't start building a Tebow offense from the get-go.

To the people of no character......please keep bashing Tim......he gets strength from it.....and he .......wins.

lol. so people who bash him automatically have "no character"??? Judgmental much?

Let see now, he stands for goodwill and peace on earth. His priorities are on the sick and poor in third world countries that dont live in peace. He lives his life in the commandments of his creator. Not to steal, kill, honor mother and father. Not bad laws to go on.
So Mr. black athiest from New Jersey, what have you ever done on this earth to match his contributions? Do you do anything but complain? I doubt it!

So I'm watching Tim Tebow miss wide open receivers right now and surfing twitter at the same time when I read a comment. "Would Tim Tebow be playing right now if he weren't Christian?"

So I am reading your comment right now and I am wondering if you would hate a 3-1 quarterback if he WASN'T a Christian.

I'll be honest. I don't know what to believe with this kid anymore. Not once have I said I hate him. I've said I don't believe he can throw the ball. But what I've seen is that he pulled another one out. Good for him. He came through when he needed to.

Sanchez on the other hand blew it for the Jets. A costly pick 6 and he forced his own receiver out of bounds in the endzone costing them another 6 points. If I were Rex Ryan I'd be furious at how the Jets played offensively. Their defence played great right up until the 5 minute mark in the 4th.

By the way, I'm a 49ers fan so Troy Aikman is my least favourite Quarterback of all time. Tebow doesn't even come close to him.
12:50 AM on 11/18/2011
Did you catch the final score? The final drive? What is the team's W L record since Tebow started? Even Charlie Sheen knows it is about WINNING. Winning very ugly, but winning. Maybe Jesus loves the Broncos...who cares?
10:31 PM on 11/17/2011
Let's face it - You can't stand a "christian" who stands up for what he believes and someone who doesn't hide behind such poop as you write. Winning is winning, and if one does it with something your don't agree with - then poop still happens even to you ! I don't even follow football, or any professional sports since they all fall under the Communist Manifesto which says that you promote
sports and the people will become dumb and forget what their leaders are doing to them. Read it
because it also says that you need to tear down religious beliefs in the process as well, Read history and when you tear down the beliefs of a nation you undermine it most effectively. Karl
Marx understood history - do you ?
11:15 PM on 11/17/2011
And where did it get marx and communism? Pretty weak.

I do not care if he is a Christian or a devil worshipper. This is a passing league.. If you cannot throw the ball you will not win Championships.

Betting against Tebow MAY be like betting against God.... I'm not going there, but heck, I'm a gator and always liked him... You do what makes you feel smart, but eating crow doesn't taste so good.... Thank you Lord for giving me the brains to pick my battles... And thanks for Tebow too...

What a great story. In the long run Fox is right. The Broncos have shown they will certainly win games, sell tickets and make fans happy, however, as long as the team continues along this path it will always crash and burn. Sure they could win the division, even this year, maybe even advancing in the playoffs some day. Will Tebow ever develop into the kind of QB necessary to win a Super Bowl? Nope, not ever and since I hate the Broncos, that's what makes it such a great story.

Defense wins Super-Bowls, so I disagree. Also, every other team but 2 don't make it to the Superbowl each year, but they keep trying to get there, they don't start the season saying, we won't get there, this is why winners win, they don't give up and they keep trying. Besides, the NFL has the best parity of all major sports. The number of games you have to win to make it to the SB is a fraction of lets say the NBA, which might play 7 games in one series!
07:04 PM on 11/17/2011
He was a Heissman trophy winner...He led his college team to a championship...He was drafted into the NFL....He has won 3 out of 4 games he started in....Enough with criticizing this guy!! Go Tebow!

Hey Fox, as if you have ever been a winner. Leave him alone and let him win. JERK!
