Nikolai Alexeyev, Russian Gay Rights Activist, Slams Anti-Homosexuality Bill

MOSCOW -- Russia's top gay rights activist on Thursday condemned a bill passed in the country's second largest city that prohibits "propaganda of homosexuality" to minors, warning it could be used to ban gay protest rallies.

Nikolai Alexeyev of the GayRussia.ru group described the legislation tentatively approved by lawmakers in St. Petersburg as a "disgrace."

The bill was proposed by the dominant United Russia party and passed Wednesday by a 27 to 1 vote, with one abstention, in the first of three required readings. It calls for a fine of up to $1,600 for "public actions aimed at propaganda of pederasty, lesbianism, bisexuality, and transgenderism among minors."

Alexeyev said the bill could become "the main legal reason to deny any public actions by the LGBT community."

"It theoretically allows the ban of anything anywhere where kids could be present," he told The Associated Press.

Homosexuality was decriminalized in Russia in 1993 and gay clubs operate in most big cities, but discrimination is still widespread. Most attempts by Alexeyev's group to hold rallies have been thwarted by riot police and activists with Russia's dominant Orthodox Church and pro-Kremlin youth movements.

This is exactly what I was thinking when I read the article, scrolled down, and right at the top read your comment. I would have thought that over 72 years of communism, irreligion, and atheism, the Russian Orthodox Church would've been beyond the dead, but I guess not. We mustn't forget though that Italy is also back in the Middle Ages, where same-sex partnerships aren't even considered for legalization yet while most all the rest of western Europe at least have provisions for same-sex partnerships, besides same-sex marriage. Even Portugal and Spain are way ahead of Italy and France, allowing same-sex marriage. Source:

All this proves is that both of you are completely clueless concerning the rest of the world's recent history. "Less Atheist" indeed! How could you miss the Fall of Communism?

And no, it is not "back in the Middle Ages". That is just politically biased hyperbole.

Why would a person in their right mind continue to live in a sinful lifestyle that would DENY them entrance into Heaven...

Why would any person in their right mind literally follow a book which has been translated from a language in which it has not been written, blindly follow people who claim to speak in name of this book, when the book glorifies out polygamy, incest, rape, and murder. And you expect to impose this book on others?

not all religions impose beliefs on non believers.

judging who and who will not get into Heaven is a sin. You aren't G-d and have no authority to post such blasphemy.

REPENT!!!!!

It is not 'blasphemy'. You have completely misunderstood the scope and purpose of the command not to judge.

Do you realize how many people have been killed for being gay/lesbians? Dont you think its our job to teach children to be kind to everyone? Its people who raise their kids to be judgmental that turn out to be so cruel!!!!!!!!!!

I just bet that the people equating gayness with pederasty are simply insecure about their own sexuality.

Interesting that homosexuality was decriminalized in Russia at about the same time SCOTUS ruled in Lawrence V Texas.
We are not as free or enlightened as we'd like to think.

Ha! I knew what you were saying. My mom got a new laptop for me and my wife as a joint birthday present back in August, and even though we keep it ridiculously clean, keys still stick every once in awhile.

And by chocolate soda, do you mean Yoohoo? Because that sounds really good right about now.
