Thanksgiving Travel Expected To Jump 4 Percent

By SCOTT MAYEROWITZ   11/17/11 11:38 AM ET   AP

NEW YORK -- This Thanksgiving, 42.5 million people in the United States are expected to hit the road to visit family and friends – the highest number of holiday travelers since the start of the recession.

Travel tracker AAA says that 4 percent more Americans than last year will journey at least 50 miles from home, with about 90 percent of them driving. Another 8 percent plan to fly, but AAA notes that higher airfares and less available seats have forced many would-be fliers to drive instead. The remaining travelers plan to take buses, trains or other forms of transport.

This is the third consecutive Thanksgiving that Americans have taken to the road in higher numbers than in the past year.

The increase in holiday travel is welcome news for an industry that has been struggling to get Americans back on the road. Memorial Day saw no increase in vacations and travel was down for both July 4th and Labor Day breaks. AAA says that Americans are willing to spend now because they want to spend time with their family.

"As consumers weigh the fear of economic uncertainty and the desire to create lasting family memories this holiday, more Americans are expected to choose family and friends over frugality," Bill Sutherland, vice president, AAA Travel Services, said in a statement.

Those driving should expect to pay more at the pump. The average price of a gallon of gas so far this November is $3.42, up nearly 20 percent from last year's $2.86, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. That means for every 100 miles a family drives this holiday they should expect to spend about $2.50 more on gas.

Rates for mid-range hotels are expected to increase 6 percent from last year ago with travelers spending an average of $145 a night. Lower-priced motels are seeing a 7-percent increase to $103.

Weekend daily car rental rates will average $37, an 11-percent drop from last year.

AAA said Thanksgiving airfares are 20 percent higher than last year with an average lowest round-trip rate of $212 for the top 40 U.S. air routes. That's estimate is much higher than a 4-percent increase predicted by both Orbitz and Priceline. Those companies said the average airfare was closer to $400. (Airlines report quarterly airfares but don't break out prices for specific holidays.)

The findings are based on a survey of 1,357 people in the U.S., 543 who said they plan to travel.

Are these the 99 percenters who are unemployed, have no money, are losing their homes, can't afford high gas prices, can't afford food, can't heat their homes anymore? According to the bombarding I've been receiving from the MSM, I was under the impression that no one can afford to travel anymore and this will be the gloomiest holiday season on record since the great depression. Something doesn't jive here.

People travel, because no one cares if a student or friend is alone for the holidays. We have relatives who haven't invited our student to do anything, so that is why he has to spend incredibly amounts of money to fly home. It used to be that families of other students who lived nearby would offer to host their children's friends for the holidays. Where is the kindess and consideration toward others? All we care about is causes in other places. Charity begins at home!
The airline fare has more than doubled since we made the reservations in early October! It's highway robbery, but the airlines are getting away with it.

Just out of curiosity, what is your student's relationship to the relatives who haven't invited her/him for the holidays? I would think if they were close relatives then the lines of communication would be open enough where the student or parents would discuss it with them beforehand, but if they're distant relatives then maybe they assume the student is spending the holidays with the immediate family, and would have to be alerted to the fact that this is inconvenient for the student.

This is a smoke and mirror story to get you to fly. The truth is airlines have cut back flights in order to fill planes. People are tired of having their rights violated and treated poorly under the guise of security. This holiday season will send a loud and clear message that Americans are not going to stand for this any longer. BOYCOTT FLYING THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS! SEND A MESSAGE

I'm glad I'm staying home this year. Here's a list of (pet and kid friendly!) Thanksgiving events if you'd rather help some worthy causes instead of dealing with traffic nightmares: http://www.ilovedogfriendly.com/2011/11/5-dogfriendly-thanksgiving-events/
