Third Eye Blind Pens Occupy Wall Street Anthem (VIDEO)

Third Eye Blind Occupy Wall Street

Never one to step back from the ledge separating music and politics, Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins has penned an ode to the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Entitled "If There Ever Was A Time," the San Francisco alt-rock mainstay's newly released protest song kicks off with a bang--an audio clip taken from the gristly aftermath of a police-lobbed tear gas canister fracturing the skull of Iraq War veteran Scott Olsen at an infamous Occupy Oakland protest.

From there, the U.C. Berkeley valedictorian (really) says Zuccotti Park is everywhere and calls on the youth of America to take to the streets--all done in Third Eye Blind's trademark glossy post-grunge style.

The track can be streamed or downloaded on the band's Facebook page.

"I think college students are going to come to terms with the unfairness of student loans, the hallowing out of jobs from finance based capitalism, and the depletion of public wealth," said Jenkins in a post on Third Eye Blind's website. "When you take money out of politics, which is what Occupy Wall Street is about for me, you reverse these trends. This song is meant to encourage their participation. I hope we flood this movement with music."

Jenkins has long been outspoken politically and often embedded political messages in his songs. In a tongue-in-cheek blog post on Huffington Post San Francisco earlier this year, he advocated for Oracle billionaire Larry Ellsion to become the next Republican nominee for president.

Here are the lyrics:

if there ever was a time, it would be now is all I'm saying if there ever was a time to get on your feet and take it to the street cause you're the one who's getting played right now by the game they're playing come on meet me down at Zuccotti park

oh where are the youth, we need you now
come speak the truth, come break it down
where are the youth, we need you now

if there ever was a time, it would be now
to make the masters hear this
if there ever was a time to get downtown
and get non violent and fearless
things only get brighter when you light a spark
everywhere you go right now is Zuccotti park

and news corps says you don't have a plan
well sit down man, i'll tell you again
the plan's to stand together up to greed
and a tear gas can in a veteran's face
won't change the case

(chorus)

if there ever was a time, it would be now
for the rest of us
if there ever was a time it would be now
cause money and power are incestuous
a moment makes a movement
or it fades out in the dark
come on meet me down at Zuccotti park

and i saw a sign in the oakland spring
it said "occupy everything!"
or by and for and off won't mean a thing

I'm trying to think who would be San Francisco's most famous bands....Journey? Huey Lewis and the News? The Grateful Dead maybe. Chris Isaak would have to be my favorite.

imo the most epic protest anthem ever written by a San Francisco band is Signs Of Life by Every Move A Picture. Period. Simple, angry and easy to dance to. What more do you want? http://bit.ly/sb9hCs

Come on out
Come on out in this light
Satellites can't see what's inside
Unlock the door; it won't save you anymore
But governments can't fight what's inside

Show some signs of life

Come on down
Come on down from these heights
Others bled to give you the right
Understand the choice, they don't even hear your voice
But governments can't fight what's inside
What's inside?

Show some signs of life

And come down and put your heart in this fight
Ah, come on and make your stand tonight

"And now again the madmen come, And should our victory fail? There is no victory in a land where free men go to jail." with thanks to Pete Seeger.

Yeah I knew it was Oakland I guess we SoCal peeps lump it all together. The first time I saw them was at Bottom of the Hill so that's my association. Either way its a stupid self serving article about a mediocre band...

Another bizarre peculiarity of the left: Howling about the cost of student loan debt without any outrage about the meteoric rise in college tuition over the last 25 years.

All about money either way, eh? Textbooks are $200 - $300 a pop. Tuition has risen over 12 times the rate of inflation, and the Bush era 'privatized' high interest student loans have given my children and yours a crippling start is a crappy economy. What, pray tell, is the difference between pointing out the rapid rise in tuition costs versus student loan debt? Either way, we're taking it in the rear.

Every movement needs its own music.
Having Crosby and Nash show up and Pete Seegar at 92 didn't exactly feel contemporary. I was waiting for Woody Guthrie's ghost to show up next.
03:42 PM on 11/21/2011
Contempory? Because there has not been any widespread protest in the last 40 years that matches anything similar to the Occupy Movement. The music of the Sixties generation (or the Thirties) is sufficient while other anthems are being written. Besides, why would anybody feel the need to denigrate Woody Guthrie or Pete Seegar? Who needs contempory when there are classics such as theirs.
07:29 PM on 11/22/2011
Every Movement needs its own music, that's why. If music is emotive, let's hear from today's emotions before people wonder just how lyrical and emotive the current "artists" are.

I prefer Makana's "We are the Many". Get this story, Makana was scheduled to play only instrumentals for the APECers because Obama likes his music. Makana went off the script and played this:

Thank You Makana, you are an awesome talent!

very revealing how their label (the 1% money-men) tells them what words can be released.in their song, now just imagine that throughout all our msm news people and so called news comedians like maher and stewart. They let obama and NIST off the hook all day long - they are told what to say - and we are all passively allowing them to muzzle our society's ears. anything and everything on tv msm is done to hypnotize you!

Third Eye Blind is not missing this opportunity to market themselves. That's capitalism.
