DETROIT -- Detroit Symphony Orchestra's musical director says he'll remain as leader and conductor through the 2015-16 season.

The 67-year-old Leonard Slatkin announced the three-year contract extension from the stage Thursday after a concert titled "Concert of Flutes" and featuring Sir James Galway.

The Detroit symphony is working to rebuild after a severe financial crunch that led to demands for sharp pay cuts for musicians and a six-month strike, which ended in April.

Slatkin came to the Detroit symphony in 2008 after a career as musical director with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra. He also leads the National Orchestra of Lyon in France.

Slatkin tells The Associated Press the orchestra is making a strong comeback, with mostly full houses and fresh corporate and private support.
