In a wacky and admittedly poorly-executed morning show stunt, Kathie Lee Gifford was literally running late to NBC's studio 1A to co-host the fourth hour of "Today."
Gifford was one of many A-listers invited to join Regis Philbin on his last day of "Live! With Regis and Kelly." This posed an obvious scheduling conflict as "Live!" aired from 9-10 a.m. at ABC on the Upper West Side, and the fourth hour of "Today" began promptly at 10:00 a.m. at NBC in midtown Manhattan.
"Today" producers placed a camera in Gifford's car to film her as she rode from ABC to NBC. Co-host Hoda Kotb opened their show by tossing to Gifford in her car and asking her to dish on Philbin's epic farewell show.
As Gifford grew teary reflecting on Philbin's career, Kotb told her not to worry because she had a surprise for her. See below for the obvious.
Kotb then went outside to personally greet Gifford with wine. At this moment however, things just went awry. Gifford seemingly lost her feed and could no longer hear Kotb. Of course, Gifford continued to talk over Kotb, who was repeatedly calling out for Gifford to "get out and run," but Gifford could clearly not hear anything. It was quite the Lucy and Ethel moment.
Gifford eventually bolted from her car and ran down 48th Street to Kotb. While Kotb awkwardly waited and looked for her co-host, she approached a cab asking "is Kathie Lee Gifford in this car?" She also commissioned a "Kathie Lee" chant that went bust rather quickly.
When Gifford finally reached Kotb, the two openly bashed the idea for Gifford's grand entrance. "Who thought this was going to work?" Kotb yelled. "This was the dumbest idea," Gifford agreed.
