Leonard Wayne Palmer, Louisiana Jail Escapee, Arrested In Connection To Sexual Assault Of 12-Year-Old Colo. Springs Girl (VIDEO)
Leonard Wayne Palmer, a 23-year-old Louisiana jail escapee, has been arrested in connection to the rape of a 12-year-old girl while she walking to a school-bus stop near her Colorado Springs home, The Denver Post reports.
The 12-year-old victim was walking to the bus stop around 9 a.m. on Oct. 25 on the 400 block of E. Brookside St. in Colorado Springs, according to the Gazette. She was pulled into an alley by her assailant, beaten and then raped.
KKTV reports that after the attack, the little girl blamed herself because she could not understand what had happened to her.
Palmer was captured by the police the day after the attack, after capturing a second Louisiana jail escape in the same area the day before. Police suspected that Palmer had only spent one or two hours in the Colorado Springs neighborhood before the attack of the 12-year-old girl occurred.
7News reports that police initially arrested Palmer just for escaping from jail, they had not yet linked him to the assault. Palmer has been held in a Louisiana jail since October and was previously serving time for burglary and forgery. Mike Velasquez, a Colorado Springs police spokesman, said that although Palmer matched the description of the rapist, they had to wait for DNA test results before formally charging him. Palmer now faces possible charges of kidnapping and sexual assault on a child.
According to KRDO, the neighborhood still remains affected by the crime, but that there is some relief that a suspect has been named.
