DREAMers Online Project On What It Means To Be Young And Undocumented In The U.S. (VIDEO)

The two-part video series "Undocumented and Awkward" depicts situations that young adults find uncomfortable enough, such as a blind date or an unexpected encounter with an old friend.

With humor, however, the narrative includes a rather dramatic twist: The often delicate question of immigration status.

The series is the work of Dreamers Adrift, a collaborative media project spearheaded by four college graduates from Southern California -- Jesus, Fernando, Julio and Deisy. Through video, art, music, spoken word, prose and poetry, they dish out revealing snapshots of what it means to be young and undocumented in America.

According to their website, the simplest, most mundane of tasks "can turn into awkward silences at best, or deportation situations at worst."

The four college grads are part of a growing chorus of young people expressing their support for the long-standing DREAM legislation, an un-passed bill that would grant some undocumented students legal status in return for two years of college or military service.

The act has become a focal point of the heated immigration debate. President Obama has expressed support for the DREAM Act and immigration reform, with the administration recently announcing a policy change that would spare many "Dreamers" from deportation as enforcement is focused on undocumented immigrants with criminal records, rather than young people or students.

According to the policy, the administration has also started a review of some 300,000 pending deportations to set aside the "low-priority" cases.

Still, last month, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported the highest number of deportations in the agency’s history. Nearly 400,000 removals occurred in fiscal year 2011 alone.

According to the White House Blog, DHS will for the first time focus resources on the removal of people convicted of serious crimes instead of "deporting people who are low priorities for deportation," including young people brought to the U.S. as minors, military veterans and their spouses.

Dreamers Adrift aims to put a human face on the national immigration debate with tales of young adults who were brought to the U.S as children and grew up here.

Take Jesus, a 28-year-old college graduate who has seen both of his parents deported. He says, "The purpose of our media is to bring this discussion forward. It gives us the opportunity to share our stories and voices, our opinions." Ultimately, he says, the goal is to "alter people's perceptions of who an undocumented person or student is."

According to Jesus, the decision go public with his status made sense: "I didn't have anything to be ashamed about. As far as putting my life on the Internet -- I did it in hopes of inspiring other undocumented youth to not feel ashamed about their immigration status."

Deisy said that raising awareness about the need for the DREAM Act is a "reward greater than the risk of being public."

Fernando, now a legal permanent resident, said he was inspired by students who staged a sit-in at Sen. John McCain's office last year. He says, "It was the first time I saw undocumented students putting themselves in such danger. Personally, I felt we had to go through with this project. At that time, I was still undocumented so I did feel afraid of 'coming out.' But it was the right time."

What's it like to be undocumented?

"Limbo is a good word," Fernando said. "This project was specifically about showing the life of an undocumented student after graduation. There's this sense of being put on hold indefinitely."

Undocumented students and supporters can submit poetry and other written works to the website for review and publication, here.

In the video "10 Years and Counting..." Julio, Fernando and Jesus walk through Los Angeles' MacArthur Park. They recounted how they spent the last ten years. Originally, a reflection on their upcoming high school reunion, their stories now explain how the failure of the DREAM Act has affected their lives.

"Our lives have been so similar," Fernando said. "Although we were all at different places, we come together ten years later to the same point. The DREAM Act hasn't passed. I think every undocumented person can relate to it."

These comments make me sick. So much hate and so much ignorance. It is not the fault of people seeking dreams of a better life, that is what our ancestors were doing when they came to America. That is was what the pilgrims did. No, it's the fault of a government that does nothing to fix a broken immigration system and a population that promotes racism and anger over understanding and proactivity. Ask your self something--if your family was suffering, perhaps starving, would you break a law to help them?

Many Americans are suffering, starving and living on the street. Illegals have taken up the lower income housing in Olathe, what about us Natural born Americans who are being forced out of our own hometown?

Wake up, ILLEGAL is Illegal!

How does it feel to drive around w/o a drivers license? Does not seem to bother illegals, until they are pulled over, AWKWARD!

Yeah then they are victims! How convenient! They come here illegally to capitolize on our system and when we say enough is enough, we're the bad guys and they have rights. On what planet does that make sense?
03:34 AM on 11/24/2011
US companies employ 12 million migrant undocumented workers because the federal government refuses to adjust the annual work visas quotas. They don't get benefits yet pay billions in taxes. So who's really capitalizing from illegal immigration? Yeah, that's right bad guy.

But they are completely oblivious to that little fact because it's not convenient and they can't get the US to pick up their tab! The parents know exactly what they are doing and I only have disgust for parents like that that use their kids to get over. They so gotta go already and take their kids with them and set healthy examples for them to follow instead of how to sneak into a country and get over on their governmen for persona gain. They have no standards and lack character and integrity, we have no obligation whatsoever to take them on just because they say so. The "gullible" American, thanks to Arizona, is gullible no more! Watch "Border Wars" on channel 66 the National Geographic Channel and how much the laws are changing and how much more enforcement there is at the border.
03:40 AM on 11/24/2011
I think the better healthier example is to have government and business stop the complacency and blind eye approach to the broken immigration system that makes criminals out of workers. Over 1/4 of all agriculture did not get picked in Arizona and Georgia is expected to lose $1B in the loss of crops so unless you want to pick tomatoes or wash your own car do you really want to chase workers away? We have maintained 100% operational efficiency on the fence that Pres. Bush erected along the border; that should demonstrate that enforcement only approach to immigration does not work.

Blame you parents. You shouldn't be here!
04:14 AM on 11/24/2011
Actually if it wasn't for everyone's parents, no one would be here. So let's take a step back and realize that only because your parents' parents came here before immigration laws became more restrictive doesn't mean you get to judge others and tell them where they belong.

I don't consider people that were brought here by their parents to be guilty, but of course the parents are guilty, and the parents being deported makes sense.
01:17 PM on 11/21/2011
If you are here and you are an illegal then you should really quit you whining if your life isn't all rainbows and lillipops.

Millions of people who live her LEGALLY are dealing with difficulties.

Sorry, but you don't take priority over them.

some of the best and brightest. Some of citizens are pretty bright too.
04:16 AM on 11/24/2011
no one is saying citizens are not bright. Just that we are stifling other members of society who are equally as bright. And honestly, if we look at the amount of money being spent on wars instead of education, can you really say we are "pretty bright too"? I would really be angry at our government for not spending more money on its citizenry and instead spending trillions on war.
01:25 PM on 11/21/2011
If they were her "best and brightest" then why haven't they done what is necessary to gain legal status in the country they chose to live in?

01:40 PM on 11/21/2011
Of course not, that would be the right thing to do but they prefer to blame everybody else instead of the only people responsible for them being in this situation.
04:18 AM on 11/24/2011
Their parents may have brought them here but that does not mean they are responsible for this situation. The immigration system is responsible because these students did everything right, including get higher education (which many many U.S. citizens do not), be people of good moral standing, and even attempt to contribute to our society in every way possible. If anything, their parents are responsible for making them the type of model citizens we should all strive to be.

Send all illegals back from whence they came!! No exceptions!

ILLEGAL ALIENS are just that illegal!...I have to live with in the law of the USA so they should too. HELL yes they should be ashamed and are nothing less then a plague on the USA. I don’t like having to pay taxes for Schools,State,Federal,County,Income and so on but I do because it's the Law of the land. I find it offensive that I have to pay for someone else that decided that it's ok to steal from me. That’s all a ILLEGAL ALIEN is, a thief. No one!! has been able to answer one simple question.. How much income tax does a day labor pay? Let me help you out. NONE that's the answer. So don't give me that they are paying taxes garbage... Not one has paid for having their kids in our hospitals...not one red cent.. Deport them just like other countries do.. All of them!! And Let them be responsible for their kids too. "but it's not the kids fault”. More garbage Parents ARE responsible for their kids..
04:21 AM on 11/24/2011
You really need to start checking your facts before spewing out lies about taxes. Many undocumented immigrants must pay out of pocket to get certain benefits that most of us get for free or at reduced cost. Also, if you're really worried about paying taxes, you should consider how much of your tax money goes to war as opposed to education. Re-prioritize who you should be angry with.
07:39 PM on 11/20/2011
These undocumented cineastes are about as deft with the medium as Ed Wood was when he directed "Plan 9 Outer Space" in 1959. Their little piece of amateur propaganda cannot mask the fact that they (and/or their parents) used subterfuge to sneak across our border and illegally set up shop in the shadows of our communities. They feel that they are superior to the immigrants who naively followed procedure and came here the right way. They blithely disregard the fact that they are cheaters, fakes and frauds who shame American latinos and erode the society's foundation of fairness, law and order. They truly are despicable in their smugness.
04:24 AM on 11/24/2011
There is nothing smug about letting people know that their situation is one that cannot be remedied by "naively following procedure." If you knew anything about immigration law, you would understand that these students cannot just apply for residency, they cannot just pay a fine and be given citizenship. And seriously, are you going to spout out hatred when you have a Mexican flag as your icon? So you're fine with using another nations national flag but you're against allowing citizens that do not even remember Mexico have some (not even ALL, the way we are afforded) rights?!
04:58 PM on 11/20/2011
This group of DREAMers is particularly inspiring. Their hard work, passion, and humor bring the message of humanity to the masses. People need to know that "immigrants" aren't some scary randoms, they are our friends and classmates and they work harder than us to get where we are. And deserve respect, love, and admiration. And rights!! :)
06:07 PM on 11/20/2011
Soryy but they are ALL still ILLEGAL ALIENS that are here or were brought here by thier ILLEGAL parents that are also here ILLEGALY!!!,Now what part of that do you not unerstand?

Unjust laws are wrong and meant to be broken, it’s called civil disobedience, and it’s a great American tradition. Without it, we would still have slavery, segregation, and child labor, to name just a few things. In fact, without it, we would still be living under the British crown.

In reality, Americans have willfully broken the law en masse several times in our nation’s history. When that’s happened, we’ve usually had the good sense to change the law. And in some instances, we’ve even called the lawbreakers heroes.

During the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. Beginning with Rosa Parks refusal to sit in the back of the bus, large numbers of African-Americans publicly broke the law to challenge the Jim Crow system of racial segregation in many parts of the south.

The time has come for us to use reason, and not self-righteousness -- Because when it comes to willfully breaking the law, the U.S. lives in a glass house.

If one existed so would I. Let me know if or when one exists, and I will protest with you. Anyone inside the borders of the U.S. has the right to an education as the constitution calls for. That's the law. It's a just law, because it doesn't marginalize anyone.

Oh I know, these uncivilized people actually thought and some still think, they have some God given right to keep Native Americans off their own land and killed 19 million Native Americans because of this belief called 'Manifest Destiny.'

quote:
European settlers falsely saw the Americas as a vast and empty wasteland that the Native Americans had failed to cultivate and, therefore, had no worthy claim to. Euro-Americans saw themselves as the torchbearers of civilization and therefore thought they were uniquely situated to acquire the vast wilderness and develop it (this later developed into the idea of Manifest Destiny). To the Euro-American mind, that the Native Americans must yield to European settlement was inevitable. This line of reasoning went so far as to result in a common nineteenth-century belief that the extinction of Native Americans was also inevitable.

Nativists prefer to ignore the reason immigrants are forced to migrate here. They prefer smearing immigrants with Faux Noos propaganda instead of looking for solutions.

The Story of 500 Years of Global Greed and Misery

If you look at the flows of money from North to South, and then from South to North, what you find is that the South is financing the North to the tune of about 200 billion dollars every year."

......"for us in the North to maintain this lifestyle, we have to plunge more people below the poverty line in the South." But if the South had cartels to raise the prices of their minerals and agricultural products, the economy of the North would collapse.

..... poverty is not an accident. It began with military conquest, slavery and colonization that resulted in the seizure of land, minerals and forced labor. Today, global poverty has reached new levels because of unfair debt, trade and tax policies -- in other words, wealthy countries exploiting the weaknesses of poor, developing countries such that today 20% of the planet's population uses 80% of its resources and consumes 30% more than the planet can regenerate.

Only 5% of the worlds population live in the United states, yet we consume over 25% of the worlds natural resources.
