Elizabeth Nichols, Occupy Portland Protester Pepper Sprayed In The Face, Identified (PHOTO)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 11/19/11 02:03 PM ET   Updated: 11/20/11 01:04 PM ET

In recent days pepper spray has become almost synonymous with the Occupy movement.

Most recently this photo, which is quickly becoming an iconic image from the movement, has gone viral. It shows Occupy Portland protester Elizabeth Nichols getting hit directly in the face with pepper spray by Portland police. The shot was taken by Randy L. Rasmussen, a photographer for the Oregonian, during Thursday's protests.

The picture itself has been called a lot of things, but intriguingly enough, the most accurate description of how it was taken is that it was an accident. Ramussen explained in an interview with the Oregonian that he didn't even know he had captured the scene until he saw it appear on a computer screen when he returned to the office.

But Elizabeth Nichols, the woman being hit in the face with the spray, certainly knew what happened (though she didn't know it had been captured on film). Nichols won't soon forget the incident, regardless of the photo.

From the Oregonian:

Nichols said a policewoman jabbed her in the ribs with a baton and pressed it against her throat. That made her angry.

She yelled at the officer, saying she was being mistreated. That's when another officer shot her with pepper spray. A photo by The Oregonian's Randy L. Rasmussen, which flashed across social media websites, shows Nichols was sprayed from a few feet away.

"It felt like my face, ears and hands were on fire," she said.

This new shot comes just days after a photo of 84-year-old Dorli Rainey went viral, after she was pepper sprayed in the face during Occupy Seattle protests. The use of the spray has become almost commonplace during recent protests, and the method has been prominent during controversial protests in New York and Oakland.

ELIZABETH NICHOLS IS A HERO IN THIS MOVEMENT.

SHE HAS PROVED THAT THE PIGS ARE JUST A SADISTIC GOON SQUAD

FOR THE ORGANIZED CRIMINALS KNOWN AS POLITICIANS.

Of course, until some REAL bad guy has his way with you. Then your soft, leftist, coward hand is dailing 911 as fast as you can.
08:38 AM on 11/23/2011
the intention of protesting is to create confrontation---then complain and gather support when it happens. Civil disobediance has to have some cost even when warrented. Order versus disorder, I dont blame one side or the other this is the game they are playing.

That's great, they poke you in the spleen and then you straighten up to get sprayed straight in the face. If they're lucky you have your mouth and eyes wide open. This was aptly compared to the fire hoses during the civil rights movement. When will the people in power stop the force and sit down to talk.

What a big tough man that cop is! Walking up to a 5 foot tall girl in full riot gear and blasting her with enough pepper spray to repel a grizzly bear. Tough as nails that guy.

Thank you, the girl is my daughter and she was falling to the ground in pain when the pic was taken.

Thank you. I feel very bad for your daughter. I was next to her in the photo, in the green baseball cap.

in the good old days it was a billy club across the back of the knees, very effective,or you could "wind" someone ,which means a blow to the stomach, things are much better now, a pepper spray, no big deal

It is a big deal if you have any pre-existing health issue. And it is possible that a large enough dose can stimulate the immune response in a damaging long-term way.
I think "things are much better now" for the police because they can feel like they aren't hurting anyone with just a spray and rubber bullets but they are abusing their non-lethal stuff.
Get ready for the heat-ray, it won't kill you but no one can last more than three seconds. It's all about suppression and who's your boss.

Police violence is okay for you? Why do you hate freedom?
12:07 AM on 01/19/2012
We created the Police and freedom is not free. Everything comes at a cost. The question that should be asked is what price are you going to pay for freedom.

What I'd like to know is: WHY weren't these poorly-trained, completely undisciplined buffoons beaten senseless by those who were witness to this outrageous action ?

When the Mayor of a City has Communicated to the Protestors that they are breaking the law and asked to leave peacefully they need to LISTEN. If I tried to camp overnight in a Public Park I would be asked to leave and if I resisted I would be arrested. How and why should this group be treated any differently? I have heard in the Liberal Media that this was NO different than the Tea Pary Movement... Really? Someone please POST one YouTube Video of Violence and Vandalism caused by any Tea Party movement. The Tea Party is proof that you can change the course of politics.

That is bull! They were not engaging in any sort of violence, and why are they spraying at zero range directly into her face? These are fellow Americans. If the same were happening elsewhere we would be calling the govt tyrants. And teh "Tea Party" changes are taking this country off a cliff with immobility because you can't get anything effective done.

Do you want some cheese with your WINE! Do your Homework! Get some facts... Where do you want to start? With the Progressive Movement called Occupy Wallstreet or this Presidents inability to do his job? Both are Blaming others for their Failure. Where do you want to start? Withe countless crimes that have been commited during Protests or the President blaming Congress when he had control of both when he had complete control for over two years but was focused on cramming Socialized Healthcare down all of our throats.
03:57 PM on 11/22/2011
Arrest them all. Then we should replace those arrested, So they can be arrested.
This is how protests work. So, when enough of us have clogged up the system, they realize the system must be changed. Remember, Rosa. If no one risks the arrests and the beatings, the status quo states in place. Protests should not be ignored. When they are, Revolutions follow.

every time the police do this they make this movement stronger and stronger. you people here attempting to discredit ows are on the losing end of this... there is nothing you can do to stop this now..... whine, carry on saying they need to take a bath and all the other childish cr@ap the right wing has sent you out to say but it's not going to matter... you have no chance of stopping this......
12:09 AM on 11/23/2011
...OWSer's are standing up and fighting for your/our American Freedoms much like our American Soldiers and many of the protesters are, in fact, American Soldiers. ...So what's the conflict? are there some of you who all of a sudden don't respect, uphold and admire our American Soldiers now????? ...a bit hypocritical wouldn't you say?

We admire our American Soldiers so much that we believe they should be Guaranteed a job and healthcare for life! Even our soldiers that never see combat. Now they can't even be sure of having their home when they get back. Our soldiers defended people's right to free speech and healthcare in Iraq. We are fighting for that and more here at home. Hopefully, actual fighting will not have to happen here.

Stopping this? It's already fading away. The 'occupy movement' did not and does not have a clear, precise goal or aim. Not ONE reachable, attainable, reasonable goal. Always the same hippie platitudes and slogans. By slashing 2 cops, by the diseases running rampant in some camps, the rapes, some deaths, you have totally lost REAL America. The silly idea of 'no one in charge' completely failed. Especially the hypocrisy of some occupy cities having to open bank accounts in the banks they despise. Grow up. The government is NOT your parents.

This is the great, "United States of America". This is the land of the free. You really can do and say anything you want. Literally. Break laws, park illegally, use the handicap spot and close an open mouth... Be sure you understand, that the one you're doing that to, can do it back, plus! Anything you want, you can do....Just be willing to suffer the consequences...(if they catch you) and don't stand in the front! It seems all the pepper spray goes to the front line. A lawyer will call her!
01:39 PM on 11/22/2011
First off let me say the sting of pepper spray or tear gas does dissipate. I know I was in the Army and was forced into a tear gas chamber as part of my training for Viet Nam. You couldn't hold your breath so you got a good blast. You cannot see or breath very well if at all. So although I do not recommend it, I do believe this generation of entitlement needs some reality in their lives. The country is in the worst deficit ever. 9 % of the population is out of work. Our leadership of liberals is destroying the country I grew up in. We have no morals, no respect for our fellow man. The media's heroes are overpaid sports folk and Hollywood people jumping in and out of bed with each other on their drug induced lifestyles. Read the Bible and see what happens in Revelations. Wake up America. Obama is behind the Occupy Movement offering free college tuition for participants. Now you know why they do not understand this platform. Just pawns part of the dumbing of America. God Bless America.

Yes seriously. I am not happy with the evolution that my children and grandchildren are facing with the world in turmoil as it is. cmr11 I am a conservative and I have been around since the fifties. Trust me this country wasn't perfect, but it was much better then today. So seriously wow! Not sure you and I could ever agree, but my opinion is just as valid as yours. Now I do hope you have a terrific Thanksgiving and God Bless you.

God Bless you man! We are in an era of idiots who believe they are entitled as long as they're an American and even those who are not are some how entitled. When the majority of Americans are haed working and tax paying law obiding citizens there are the weak and lazy who want to live off of the Government and the rest of Americans. The President should be back in Washington dealing with the Debt Crisis rather than out Campaigning which is exactly what he is doing. This President and his Administration has done nothing but blame everyone else for their failures, sound familiar?

You are right on target my friend. God Bless you as well. This administration has done everything in George Soros' power and pocketbook to destroy this country. I've been to Russia back in the 90's trust me we do not want to go there. I also have members in our church from Russia in total disbelief of the insanity of this administration. If anyone can spot a communist a former Russian citizen can.
