The 10 Fastest-Growing Keywords In Job Postings: Indeed

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 11/20/11 12:43 PM ET   Updated: 11/20/11 01:01 PM ET

It used to be that the only technological expertise you needed to get a job were basic word processing and webmail skills. Times have changed. According to Indeed, a job-finding search engine, the ten fastest-growing keywords in job postings have nothing to do with punctuality or writing skills, at least not the kind of writing most of us are used to.

Indeed analyzed millions of job postings and found that the top ten skills employers are looking for are all related to software development, mobile development and social media.

Most of these keywords exploded in popularity in 2010 and continued their lightening fast growth this year. Although tech terms remained in the top spots, there was some notable reshuffling among the most popular keywords, according to Indeed's recent data, collected between February and November 2011. Twitter and Facebook fell completely off the list, and their spots were taken by several platforms used in cloud computing.

See the top trends in tech job listings (below). Then, take a look at our list of the top companies that techies want to work for (here).

Both small and large businesses have found that social media can be a powerful way to connect and engage with customers. If new employees have an understanding of sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and others, they can help their employers better utilize these media. Social media marketing managers are in particularly high demand, based on Indeed's research.

My daughter's boyfriend (and her) moved to Silicon Valley where he works for a 2 year old startup as their Ruby On Rails programmer (Ruby is the language, Rails is the framework). They hired him at 20k more than he asked for, paid for his moving expenses, after 3 months, gave him another 10k, and in 3 more months, he'll get his 6 month review (and probably another 10k along with more stocks added to the 6,000 in stocks they gave him at hiring.)

He should enjoy it. When the company goes bust in two years he will need some savings.

I don't know any unemployed programmers. If you can do the work and make it clear that you can do the work, then you are employed.

The only thing I'd fault employers for is being stuck on KEYWORDS, like you see in the list above.

If you find someone who actually knows how to develop software then they can adapt to new forms/architecture (like cloud or mobile technologies) and using new tools (HTML5, JQuery, etc). If anything, it's the challenge that drives these people to perform even better. That's what gets people into this type of work in the first place.

Hiring strictly for experience is looking for someone who is happy doing what they already know --> you are staffing an assembly line. You want someone who constantly wants more - someone who wants to adapt.

Except for the comment about unemployed programmers, I TOTALLY agree with the rest of your comments, Pucker. GOOD programmers are "born" not made. There's a sensitivity to users, a drive for good design, and almost an obsessive personality type that makes excellent designers/coders.

These businesses don't know what they're doing. It's like a local auto repair hiring someone who "specializes in spark plugs" or is "an expert in muffler replacement." Imagine if a want ad said, "we're looking for someone with experience replacing Goodyear tires," because, you know, other tire brands are so different.

News Flash: most of these scripting languages can be researched and mastered in a weekend by someone who has experience, since the basic language idioms are recycled and re-used over and over again. When you start doing more advanced software development, the similarities between platforms actually increase rather than decrease.

One more note.
It mean absolutely nothing that some job growing right now. In one year this jobs may not even exist. I fill really sorry for the student that just going to school. In 5 year when they graduate there may not be any job for them thanks to our "ingenuous" politician.
We need to revived the old slogan: "Buy American"
We need import tax so we can got our manufacturing back.

I'm pretty sure no matter what year it is, proper spelling and grammar are good skills to have. You might want to upgrade.

I think you're being harsh. The message is valid, even if the grammar is lacking. That's why companies like Microsoft have programmers and technical writers -- separate skills.

You write English. S(he) writes code. Is that fair?
11:23 PM on 11/20/2011
Android, yes
IoS - Apple loosing market share
HTML 5 - yes
Social networking - that matter of fashion - in 5 year that will be very small.
Look for the following:
OpenCL
WebCL -> will become part of HTML5
This will be your future bred and butter.
The next revolution is integration multi core system for general purpose computing. Using graphic card GPU for computing is not new idea, however there are finally tools to do that on all major platforms using one code. Every major player is in there - AMD, Intel, IBM, Nvidia, Samsung, Nokia.... Using integrated programing for multi CPUs and GPUs in general computing is a next giant leap in computing. The speed improvement is so high is almost scary to imaging:
http://www.heatlab.cz/OpenCLforDelphi.html
We switching from sequential to parallel computing.
12:22 PM on 11/21/2011
Yeah, okay; at a system level. But job wise, there will always be more application development jobs than system programming jobs. Social networking is now embedded in the _global_ culture; the very way that people experience and interpret there lives. So five years from now it may not be called "social networking" but it will still be viable and valid.

Another scheme to eliminate older workers....
12:09 AM on 11/21/2011
I've been in the computer technology field since the late 80's. I understand your situation, however, we work in a very dynamic and ever changing field. Respectfully, if you're unable to keep up with technology, then it's your fault. Older workers are being hired, at least at the company I work for in Chicago, because they had the necessary skills. The average age just in my team is 44, and we are using the latest technologies in the Telecom arena, and that includes some of the technologies mentioned in the article.
