Linda Katehi, UC Davis Chancellor, Confronted By Students

Linda Katehi

A crowd of UC Davis students confronted chancellor Linda Katehi in the wake of an incident that occurred between protesters and campus police on Friday.

According to reports, police unleashed pepper spray on a group of students protesers who were part of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Video footage of the protest shows that students were sitting quietly when police began to show off a can of pepper spray before dousing the students.

Katehi held a press conference on Saturday to address the incident. Students began to surround the building in protest and she reportedly refused to leave amid safety concerns. Finally, the students cleared a path for her to exit. As she walked back to her car, surrounded by students, some began to ask her questions, which she mostly brushed off

"Chancellor, do you still feel threatened by the students?" someone asked. She replied, "no" and a companion said that "we've asked for it to be a silent, respectful exit."

Katehi will address the students directly on Monday.

The officers' behavior has sparked outrage among the Occupy Wall Street and UC Davis communities. Two involved officers have reportedly been put on administrative leave and students have even called for the chancellor's resignation.

These UC Davis students should now be considered the face of OWS.

After everything they went through, they showed amazing restraint. I give my utmost respect to them.

Well done.

I am very unhappy that the university cops used unnecessary violence on students who were sitting on the ground and in a supine position -hardly a threatening posture. A right to peaceful assembly is a constitutional right. The cops and the university have no business denying them this right.
The student pay the salary of all university employees - directly in tuition and indirectly in taxes that funds the campus - this makes them the university's customers.
I work in the private sector- there is no possible way my company would even think of treating our customers this way. Totally shameful.
The cops involved and the university chancellor should be fired. They deserve nothing less.

The students should have been homespinning their own cloth while Linda Katehi, UC Davis Chancellor, was walking by.

Dear Chancellor Katehi, I've now watched the video of the students being sprayed with pepper spray and also the video of your walk of shame multiple times. Each time both videos bring tears to my eyes but not for you. I cry because the students you claim to be protecting and then claimed to be afraid of set a much better example of peaceful behavior than either yourself or the campus "security." Better Mam, that you had stood with your students last week, arm in arm, resisting the police. Oh! But wait! It was you who called campus "security" in the first place. Bummer dude.

I love that video. I congratulate the students of UC Davis.

Today I am sending a letter to Linda Katehi, telling her to resign. She supports police violence against students.

Dear Chancellor Pisti Basile Katehi - Tseregounis

I can’t believe your response to the recent events on YOUR NEW campus.
If there is anyone who should feel that they are swinging a sword of tragedy it should be you.

Don’t you remember the tragedy that took place on YOUR OLD campus Athens Polytechnic - National Technical University of Athens where you went to school 38 years ago?

Did you live through the day the tank drove over the gate,
over the cars that were in back of the gate, and into the courtyard?
Did you live through all the shooting?
Was anyone you knew shot?

I can tell you, as a college junior who was in Athens 38 years ago,
I remember that day like it was yesterday.Did you forget those things or did you think the troops gave the right responseshooting everyone they could then?

Or maybe you believe the Athenians were wrong in 500 BC,
wrong again November 1973, and that the students were wrong November 2011 in pursuing democracy.

I believe you should withdraw from UC Davis immediately.Either your memory is too bad to remember or you are on the wrong side of democracy.

Sincerely,
Gene Evangelist
