Democrats Visit Alabama To Push For End Of Immigration Law

Democrats Alabama Immigration

A group of congressional Democrats gathered in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday to show support for a growing movement against the state's immigration law, aiming to "rush its demise," according to Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.).

"We were here not only to show support but to tell the people of Alabama, the people that are fighting this law, the opposition to the law, plus the immigrant families that are being directly affected, that they're not alone," Grijalva, co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, told HuffPost.

He called an end to the law "inevitable," but said critics may be able to speed the process of repealing it by applying pressure to state lawmakers. A coalition of immigrant and civil rights groups joined with labor groups and religious organizations to fight the law, H.B. 56.

The 11 members heard from various advocates and Alabama residents who said the law is hurting the state, whether by frightening immigrants and Latinos, hurting local businesses or diminishing the state's reputation. The much-criticized law, implemented in June, allows police and local government workers to ask about immigration status during stops and interactions with the government.

Some Latinos, both undocumented and those in the country legally, fled the state in reaction to the law, according to reports. Farms and local businesses reported losing workers and customers, and absentee rates increased in local schools. Last week, a German executive for Mercedes Benz was arrested under the law for failing to carry his driver's license.

At an ad hoc hearing on Monday in Birmingham, congressional members heard from the city's mayor, William Bell, as well as a parent, a local high school teacher and a businessman, among others. A 17-year-old student told the delegation that she feared her parents, both of whom were undocumented, who be forced to leave the state, leaving her there alone to finish her education.

Another woman, identified as Trini, said she and her neighbors are unable to renew the registration on their mobile homes due to the law, because residents must prove legal status before they can obtain the sticker. She said the law makes immigrants fearful of going outside.

"I used to participate in festivals and activities in our community but now I don’t go out and feel like a prisoner in my house," she told the members of congress, according to her planned remarks. "We miss the freedom to go out for dinner or go to the park without being monitored."

Angie Wright, who represents Greater Birmingham Ministries on the steering committee for the Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice, said that one moving testimony focused on the questions faced by families considering leaving the state.

"It's horrible choices that families are facing," Wright told HuffPost. "I think the people who passed laws weren't thinking about the fact that most families aren't all undocumented, most families are a mix of documented and undocumented."

Critics of the law have taken a two-pronged approach. Some groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union, sued the state to block the law, a move that was repeated by the Department of Justice. The Justice Department lawsuit was partially successful; although most of the law went into effect, a federal judge blocked a provision that allowed schools to inquire about immigration status and another that required immigrants to carry an "alien registration card."

At the same time, opponents of the law are pushing for its repeal. A bill to end the law was already introduced in the state legislature, and the coalition plans to gather 1,000 people to rally at the Capitol when it opens for its next session in February.

"We're trying to get the law repealed or blocked in Congress," Mitch Ackerman, an executive vice president for Service Employees International Union, said from Alabama. "First they went after workers, and now they went out for business leaders. I think there is just going to be a rising chorus that says 'Not in our America.'"

Carl, please stop the bull***t. As a Mexican American I'm fed up with the illegal accusations that when made target all Hispanics especially the darker ones. Our history is riddled with racism formulated into law and these new laws are no exception especially when they harm American citizens and legal residents; it is terroism at its finest. No Swedes, you are right. The Swedes, German, and all Northern Europeans got a free pass because of the color of their skin. Ask the Native Americans how they felt about that illegal invasion that still continues unabated. And illegal immigration at the northern border are Europeans, but they don't pose a problem because you certainly won't pass the same kind of laws that would target all Europeans in this country now would you?

Why do Republicans hate American soldiers? They even "boo" American troops and they "boo" Americans that support the U.S. Military.

The real question should be is why are Republicans determined to destroy America?

Raul Grijalva is an embarrassment to his home state of Arizona. Not only did Grijalva win reelection through fraudulent registering of illegal aliens to vote, his allegiance is clearly more aligned with Mexico and Mexicans than with America and Americans. It's unfortunate that the Huffington Post would give this seditious slug a forum to spout his anti-Americanism.

Nothing more"unamerican" than gutting our 4th amendment.
When you have some proof that non-citizens are voting, please bring it forward. Until then your accusations are just that and have no moment.

Why do democrats not defend Americans what part of elected by Americans do they not under stand?????? if they get their way and 12,000,000 illegal hispanics get a free pass then they each bring up another 10 or 20 family members what are us Americans going to do, will we have jobs can we afford 200,000,000 Hispanics collecting food stamps, Medicaid, and not paying taxes, where will these democrats be then.???????

Please make a distinction between illegal aliens and "Hispanics." There are millions of Hispanic AMERICANS who happen to loathe illegal aliens as much as Anglos do. Furthermore, not all illegal aliens are Hispanic, a large percentage are Latin American Indians ("Hispanic" means "of the Spanish" and refers to a person's ancestral heritage. Indians are not "Hispanic", even if they speak Spanish).

I speak in general, the majority of illegals in this country are Hispanics, and they are taking the construction, factory, and other jobs in this country once held by Americans who could not afford, or to go to collage for one reason Or another.they are the biggest group misusing our welfare, medical, and food stamp programs. They are the biggest group breaking the laws, and expecting Americans to learn their language not blend into American society. Their are Hispanic Americans and most are good and productive Americans and if I were them I would be bit?hinge to ICE, calling my crongressmen, and demanding all illegal Hispanics be picked up and sent back.....

Happy Thanksgiving officer Ed, if your name refers to your job then you should be interested in this, google it. Google Title 8 of the US Code, this has been the law for years just that lib democrats do not want you find out about it. It is a felony to hire and/or give haven to an illegal, it is a felony to give benefits to an illegal unless it is life threatening that means no more prenatal go home and have your baby, they can not use their anchors to receive food stamps, rent asst., or any other bennie. If you are an officer help by enforcing the law..........

I do, and I do look into the truth, if a free ride, amnesty is given, you will see an innovation of illegally that will choke this country, we would fold from the demand on free medical medicaid, our WIK program, food stamps, and what you make now would go to maybe $8.00 an hour, and you want to talk facts, you need to do some reading there is an immigration law on the books there are rules to follow about giving free prenatal care ONLY LIFE THREATING MEDICAL CARE not come over and pop out more then you can afford. As I said arrest. And deport.............

Grijalva should be removed from congress as everything he says and does is a violation of his oath of office and also is against the law. Aiding and abetting illegal aliens is a federal crime. This handful of PRO-ILLEGAL media ho's will have no effect whatsoever on the overwhelming support hb 56 has within the state's electorate. If anything, it will serve to further galvanize the unification and expand similar legislation in other states.

Keep up the good work Alabama, perhaps one day Washington will follow your lead and actually enforce federal immigration law on the 14-20 MILLION individuals illegally residing inside our borders.
08:25 PM on 11/22/2011
Too bad these Democrats SPIT on the memory of Rep. Barbara Jordan and the work of her commission on immigration. Most Democrats do NOT support this stupid idea that illegals have a right to be in the US.
08:45 PM on 11/23/2011
Very true. The vast majority of Americans do not support amnesty - and that includes Democrats as well as Hispanic Americans.
04:49 PM on 11/22/2011
If Americans wouldn't hire them, they wouldn't come. Look in the mirror. 14 of 17 Arizona counties have NEVER charged an employer with hiring illegal employees. Americans have nobody to blame other than themselves for this situation.
04:44 PM on 11/22/2011
They should be protesting this law. But they should also be working for comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level. Give people a pathway to citizenship! Dare to DREAM!

Otherwise, what's your plan for deporting 20 million people? State laws like Alabama? Or surrounding town after town with the army and then send in Blackwater mercenaries to kick in doors, shoot anybody who defends themselves and then drag whoever is left kicking and screaming into waiting train cattle cars that you point south across the border? What's the plan to determine who is a legal citizen or not? Armbands? Or do you just arrest everyone, put them into detention and then let some privatized security company sort us all out?
08:21 PM on 11/22/2011
Well we just did nearly half a million this year, so we can double that easily and in a few years most will be gone. As AL showed, once the laws start being enforced, the illegals get out of town ASAP. So at most we would only have to do but 4 or 5 million and the rest would leave on their own. The same way they got here.

Once we start enforcing E-Verify for ALL employers, most of the jobs will dry up, and increased border security with a fence will cut down on the illegals considerably. Problem solved!

your overly dramatic scenario is so over the top, it makes no sense. when an illegal is encountered, they should be expatriated back from whence they came.....period

So you don't think Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), work did so well in Arizona. Let me just give a bit of vital information. First Arizona is lucky to have four neighboring states with a very high percentage of Chicanos. These American folks of Chicano ancestry have millions of relatives in Arizona. When you compare this to the Anglos that reside in Arizona whom most relatives come from the Midwest and East Coast. These Anglo folks have a greater distance to travel to visit their relatives.

Prior to Chicanos lifting the boycott here is what was having a tremendous negative effect on the Arizona economy. When visiting our families we would fill-up or car and grub-up say in New Mexico. Travel to visit family in Arizona and never spend a penny there. Multiply this by whatever number you want and it equals mega millions of dollars lost in tourism.

The American Southwest has been loaded with Chicanismo for centuries.

Our intent was not to hurt Arizona. Arizona hurt itself.

As folks there now say: It's a new day in Arizona.
02:59 AM on 11/23/2011
You grossly overstate the effect the "boycott" had. NObody is chasing down that all-elusive, chicano disposable income you are tauting. They consistently represent the lowest rungs of the economic ladder and their influence on the economy of Arizona is negligible.

“On December 3, Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Legislative Affairs, Nelson Peacock, responding to request from several U.S. Senators, including Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), wrote: “Our conservative estimate suggests that ICE would require a budget of more than $135 billion to apprehend, detain and remove the nation’s entire illegal immigrant population.”

http://www.examiner.com/immigration-reform-in-national/dhs-confirms-cheaper-to-deport-every-illegal-alien-than-allowing-them-to-stay#ixzz1XkZwIm1v

Creating 5 million to 7 million existing U.S. jobs “vacated” by deporting 11.2 million illegals for $135 billion, "one-time cost" ~ sounds like a better investment for the U.S. Taxpayer

Than the $447 billion American Jobs Plan of 2011 ~ which "mirrors" the failed $787 billion ObamaStimulus Act of 2009, taking the U.S. Unemployment Rate from 7.8% to 9.1% = a loss of 2 million additional jobs, since GWB ~ costing the U.S. Taxpayer $393,500 for each & every one of the 2 million jobs it lost.

Interestingly ~ BHO’s new proposed $447 billion American Jobs Plan of 2011, is hopeful to create 1.9 million new jobs. To cover the 2 million jobs that BHO’s ObamaStimulus Act of 2009 ~ lost since GWB
04:53 PM on 11/22/2011
They have "created" those jobs in Alabamy. Still waiting for the takers.
03:58 PM on 11/22/2011
When those farm jobs are available in Alabama, there should be no complaining about unemployment.

Question? Mr. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus ~ You have been so ineffective in Arizona, fighting AZ SB 1070, why are you trying to impose yourself into Alabama's politics?

To be equally, ineffective? Or, did you get run out of Arizona?

Thank you, and let's continue the great work!

But this would only pay dividends if the border are better protected.

The billions saved on providing education, incarceration and other social serviced for the deported, should be earmarked to improve border control.

sorry, read the fine print- they are mostly criminals. The policy is to leave peaceful, law abiding illegal immigrants alone- and yes, a lot of them do pay taxes, and get w-2s btw. Most anybody that comes to the US can and does apply for a social security card. If they do not have their own, they use someone else's, but taxes are still taken out as long as they are employees of a co. which is usually the case IME.

America needs do away with immigration America needs no passport control and should allow all nations to send all there people if they want to come to America ,

allowing one country over the rest is bigotry just because there close doesn't make them more special ..

free boarders free crossings any way you can come America well be a third world nation ..
