Michelle Obama, Jill Biden At NASCAR: Bright Outfits, Gloomy Welcome (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/21/11 08:11 AM ET Updated: 11/21/11 08:34 AM ET

We were pretty excited but also surprised when we heard Michelle Obama and Jill Biden would be attending a NASCAR race in Miami. The effort was noble -- the race was attended by service members and military families, whom both First Ladies honored at a special lunch before the race -- but we sort of assumed Michelle and Jill would look a tad out of place.

In a statement that totally went without saying, Michelle addressed the families before the race: "This is -- both Jill and I, this is our first NASCAR race, and this is a huge race. That I know. It's a big deal."

Unfortunately, Michelle was given a frosty welcome by NASCAR fans, who booed when she was introduced over the loudspeakers as a grand marshal (at 0:09).

But the women seemed to take it in stride... and they were certainly more appreciated by the parents and children they met with prior to the speedway (un)welcome.

Meeting with the military families as part of the White House's Joining Forces initiative, Michelle and Jill looked to bond in a casual setting. The women set the tone in bright, easy outfits: FLOTUS picked a blue print top by Maison Martin Margiela with loose navy pants (a bit baggy for our taste) and SLOTUS picked a red and navy Michael Kors sheath. (Both pieces, it should be noted, were repeats.)

Of course Michelle's biggest style statement were the giant yellow headphones she wore during the race. Got to love the contrasting colors.

I saw the video of the introduction of the Presidential Ladies. There were some boos but overall, most were applauses. Thank you to the people that showed the good old southern hospitality as the First Lady said this was their first NASCAR race. You upheld and represented the best of the South. You understand about first impressions. To all you BOOERS. I know your Mama taught you better!!

Well, not that it needed proving, but those folks that day just proves even mud can walk.

The First Lady and Mrs VP have more class and maturity in one cell of their little fingers than do all the folks booing that day at See'um-Cars'-Go-Round-&-Round-Big-Day-Race.

I find it funny that so many are using stereo types of Nascar fans. Nascar and racing in general has fans from all walks of life. My husband and I are well educated as are many race fans. The type of people so many of you are talking about attend virtually every sporting event. I have been to baseball, football, hockey, and basketball games where I have witnessed much worse behavior than I have ever seen at a race. Races attract much larger crowds. Homestead seats 90,0000, Daytona over 250,000. Because there are more people in general, there have to be more jerks. Two years ago Sarah Palin (who was not grand marshall) attended a race in Daytona. There were applause, there were some booes, but mostly there was a less than a warm welcome. We have seen John Travolta, Nicholas Cage, and many others as grand marshall, where applause were not overwhelming and there are always some booes. Race people are there for the race. Not politics, not tv or movies, just the race. The longer it takes to get it going, the less excitement there is for anyone who proceeds it. The charities supported by Nascar, it's drivers, and the fans are second to none. Camps for kids, cancer, injured veterns, the elderly, are supported by this community. That is not ignorant, just the way it is. For those of you who choose to stereo type, have at it, you are just as bad as those who booed.

NASCAR fans are as American as Baseball and Apple Pie also. Some really old roots in those fans. Southerners are slow speakers but only because their minds are always working, not looking for free handouts.

So Michelle and Jill are there to honor military personnel and their families and get booed? Classy bunch, that Nascar crowd.

MIchelle was there for good publicity. Her husband is running for re-election. Jill was not booed.
It is a testament to her reign.

Michelle has been working for military families since her husband took office, where have you been? Your last statement is a testament to your view, not to the lady. Your biases are showing!

I am sure Nascar is quaking with the thought of you contacting them. What did everyone expect would happen? Am I the only one who realized that she would be the most unpopular person at the race track? So...here's a great idea...let's have the most unpopular person in the place get introduced and stand up in front of everyone. She should have went to some lobster, and wine tasting ceremony where everyone turns up their nose at all those poor hicks who drink beer and eat fried food.

Why acknowledge those good old boy people at Nascar I for one am making a list of sponsors to write to ...they are ignorant and clueless and support the supremacist movement so why should my consumer dollars go to those companies that sponsors the teams.

I work outside. My coworkers & I see a lot of Vultures circling in the sky. We've started calling them "NASCAR" birds. Sometimes, they turn around and go the other way..
