Tray Ross, Georgia Chicken Plant Worker, Rescues Blind Man From Burning Home

Tracy Ross

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- A chicken plant worker is being credited with saving a 76-year-old blind man from his burning home in Georgia.

Tray Ross was working at the plant when co-workers said the nearby home was on fire. Ross ran to the home, went inside and crawled toward the man as he listened for his desperate screams.

Ross finally grabbed the blind man's ankle. The man grabbed Ross' hand and Ross was able to pick him up and carry him out through the front door.

Both men were treated for smoke inhalation after the Monday morning fire.

The blind man was rescued before firefighters arrived. His name was not immediately available.

I can't even think of the words to explain how grateful we are that people like you exist.
I wish you and yours the best this Thanksgiving. Much love, from your not so faraway neighbor in Florida.

"He's Just An Excitable Boy"

This is one of my worst fears for my daughter: fire in our house! She became blind at the age of 23 after surviving an eight month coma due to viral encaphalitis. The brain damage also left her with severe nerve damage to her legs wherein she must put on her walking brace to walk long distances as she can't feel her feet nor rotate her ankles. Also the nerve damage has left her with no sense of smell.

We have installed eight additional smoke alarms throughout our upper level where her bedroom is located. I was able to relax a bit after she was able to balance enough on numb feet to acquire a trained guide dog that was able to walk at her slower pace. But we still vigilant.

Thank God for true heroes (the ones who put their own safety and lives on the line). I know some believe it is just adrenaline, but it has to START with the human compassion and COURAGE to begin the process before the human body reacts with adrenaline necessary.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Tray, for giving my day an uplift. I always attempt to read other inspirational stories after commenting on the political pages.

Great job Mr. Ross. There is a lack of this kind of compassion in the world today. When you put others before yourself, you are a true hero!

How nice to read a positive article for a change. I have to assume that as a chicken plant worker, this man, Tray Ross, is just a hard working man, trying to make it week-to-week. It is truly a Thanksgiving story. The blind man, I'm sure, will be forever greatful to him for saving him from his burning house.

Thank You From The Ross Family!! Happy Thanksgiving! & And yes, Like Most Americans And Others We Do Live Paycheck To Paycheck....And With A 4 and a half month old it gets hard sometimes but money doesnt defy anyone! We are just happy to have a healthy happy family!

In my life, I never would have thought that a person I was making a comment about, would be reading the article that Huff Post had printed. Jessica, I assume you are Tray Ross' wife. He obviously is a kind man who cares about others.

I wish you, Tray and your new baby a very happy Thanksgiving and my best wishes for a healthy and happy 2012. Bless you. I can see that you are a special person, too.

If you look up the word HERO in the dictionary, you'll see Tray Ross' picture next to it. Way to go Tray!

If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?
12:15 AM on 11/23/2011
I see people applying the word 'hero' to so many people for doing things that are good, but not necessarily heroic. And doing good things for others is important. We all should. But for those who are confused about what it means to be a hero, this story underscores it perfectly. Someone who risks their own life to help someone else who is unable to help themself IS a hero. Tray Ross, you are a hero.

Tray, if you are reading this and other accolades to your heroic actions, you have done more than enough helping and saving your fellow man. I often hesitate to use the word "hero", but not today. You are a true hero.

How nice to read some GOOD news! We receive daily fare of the bad, ugly, hopeless, despairing, hateful, and greedy..but none of that builds people up, or encourages in any way.

His selfless act of having compassion for a fellow human to the extent of endangering his own life is what touches the heart, and a faint glimmer of humanity now becomes a shining beacon.

This in no way takes away from those that are heroes on a daily basis, because they train for it, live for it, have special clothing and equipment...and we are ever so grateful to them for that; but what makes this man's act so different is that he had no training, no special protective clothing, no equipment, nor anyone else helping. His mind and heart compelled him for all the right reasons. Bravo, Tray Ross!
