Iran: US Sanctions Will Have No Effect

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran's foreign ministry spokesman on Tuesday denounced Washington's new set of sanctions against Tehran, predicting the measures will have no effect and dismissing them as "propaganda and psychological warfare."

The remarks by Ramin Mehmanparast were the first from Iran after the Obama administration announced the new measures on Monday in an effort to apply greater pressure to get Tehran to halt its suspected nuclear weapons program.

The measures were coordinated with Britain and Canada and build on previous sanctions to target Iran's oil and petrochemical industries and companies involved in nuclear procurement or enrichment activity. The U.S. also declared Iran's banking system a center for money laundering – a stern warning to financial institutions around the world to think twice before doing business with Tehran.

Shortly after the announcement, President Barack Obama said in a statement that "Iran has chosen the path of international isolation" and that "as long as Iran continues down this dangerous path, the United States will continue to find ways, both in concert with our partners and through our own actions to isolate and increase the pressure upon the Iranian regime."

The latest sanctions follow a new report from the U.N. nuclear watchdog suggesting Iranian work toward the development of atomic weapons. Tehran denies pursuing a nuclear weapon program saying its nuclear activities have aimed at peaceful purposes like power generation.

"The action that some Western countries, particularly United States and Britain is pursuing, will be without result," said Mehmanparast. He added that, like past sanctions, the new ones are "only attempts at propaganda and psychological warfare."

"The sanctions reflect the enmity toward our nation and are to be condemned," said Mehmanparast. He said the measures will be ineffective as Iran's trade and economic ties with the United States and Britain were small anyway.

Release of the International Atomic Energy Agency's report had sparked frenzied international diplomacy over how to halt the Iranian threat, including speculation in the U.S., Europe and Israel on the merits of military intervention.

The United Nations has passed four rounds of global sanctions against Iran since 2006, but veto-holding nations Russia and China stand in the way of any further action. American officials have held back from blanketing all of Iran's fuel-related exports and its central bank with sanctions, for fear of spiking world oil prices and hampering the American economic recovery.

Russia, China, India and other nations maintain larger-scale trade with Iran, whose energy exports have helped it shrug off serious harm from the U.N. sanctions and other penalties applied by individual countries or the European Union.

Mehmanparast also denied reports that Iran had supplied former Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi with hundreds of special artillery shells for chemical weapons, which Libya kept secret for decades.

"This is another allegation in the psychological war," said Mehmanparast.

The US is so concerned and so willing to take action against the potential development of a nuclear weapons program rather than taking action to prevent the continued persecution by the Iranian government of the Bahai minority that was one of the key points in the UN Resolution against Iranian Human Rights Violations. Interesting priorities...

Robert Baer ex cia spilled the beans on this. Its all over oil and gas. seeutube (Hardtalk Robert Baer on US-Iran Relations)

Iran is dictating oil prices. Big Oil want them smashed. That's enough to start a war..

They are also undercutting the US by running a gas pipe to India. This is one of the key reason the US are in Afghanistan. Pipe protection!

or more apt... Profit Protection!

And regarding the trumped up nuclear weapons accusations. If Iran used nuclear weapons they know they would be blown off the face of the earth. period! Trumped up typical war mongering by USA used as justification.

History repeating

Its a pity the USA aint using the term WMD's any more. The main stream media has dropped it. Wish they would use this again as it may jog memories. Funny how this has disappeared..

The main stream is the empires lap dog!

People don't let this war happen as it may be the start of world war three and the end of the American Empire.

NB:China is a huge trading partner with Iran. Turkey is also a good friend. Pakistan would probably have a go and Russia is an unknown

Think my friends...

by the way sanctions don't work. It just pisses off public.

"propaganda and psychological warfare"

It actually is economical warfare and at some point the US condcuted an all out war against Iran by proxy (Iraq-Iran war 1980-1988).

Iranian theocracy was opposed, is opposed and will be opposed in the future.
The cycle of embargoes, denials of technology, ideological, economic diplomatic, political and covert opposition will ensure the eventual collapse of this devolutionary regime. Patience.
of course, the struggle with pernicious Iranian influence is not limited to Iran itself.

Iranian agents provocateur have been operating throughout the world, since this Jihadist regime came to power. Hundreds of graves of their victims in Middle East, Europe. and U.S are the evidence. They must be discovered, arrested and jailed.

Can we see some proof of bad Iranian intentions ? Others than a fabricated computer and, under pressure of the USA, fabricated pieces of paper?? Just for once be honest, tell us that this is no more than revenge for the fact that Iran wanted the control over its own recources. Please be honest, you have tried it for a halve century and longer will many tactics but, Iran has the right to its own oil.
Buy it, dont steal it as done in the 50s

Iran does no trade with the US anyway, and countries it does trade with: China and Russia, don't listen to Washington
Sanction do provide Tehran with a easy scapegoat for any real economic woos and deflect blames for what otherwise might actually bring down the government.
Israel really need to change its strategy, the old method of getting its client states to do its bidding doesn't work.

Calling for an Attack on Iran: US, Israel Politicians are "Detached From Reality"
"The United States, a nation that has consistently been directly and indirectly involved in military conflicts every decade since the 1940s and Israel, the most aggressive militaristic regime in the region, are much greater threats to world peace than Iran could ever be.Iran is a threat to neither in the US or Israel. Israel is a regional superpower with a world-class army and nuclear weapons. The US is the world’s sole superpower and recently acquired 20 GPS-guided 30,000 lb bunker-busting bombs [8] and “held a successful test flight of a flying bomb that travels faster than the speed of sound and will give military planners the ability to strike targets anywhere in the world in less than a hour.” [9] (emphasis added) Thus, how would Iran pose a threat to either nation, much less the entire world?
The US and Israeli leadership are detached from reality and this could potentially prove quite dangerous and costly not only for their nations, but for the world at large."

This article perfectly iIIustrates the moral bankruptcy of the US war propaganda US mainstream media. Illegal wars of aggression like the war against lraq should have no rewards at all costs. Besides, all oil contracts under foreign occupation are illegal.

I agree with Iran, US sanctions are effectively gen0c1de and infant1cide to the people, and most often do NOTHING to change govt. behavior in countries that have repressive regimes.

It's all about oil and the support of the US dollar. Our hegemony over the oil bourses has come to an end, it's time we went back to our corner and left these countries alone.

1). duh.

2) then why complain; ask for more if you think they have no effect.

Sanctions are worthless and silly. We need to stop being the world's bully and learn how to win friends and influence people. These constant uproars over nothing make us look ridiculous.
11:42 AM on 11/23/2011
The only way we could become friends is if we if we condone their choice of living violently.
If you want to be their friend, go for it, & go live there.
12:16 PM on 11/23/2011
That is a weak response. "Go and live there" is what Teapublicans have tried to stamp as a sign of patriotism. The days of, You are either with us or against us, is over. Learn to argue your point without resorting to bully tactics, or get out of this forum.(sarcasm intended)

The US is ruled by warmongers supported by people who can't find their way on a world map and a Congress that dances to Netanyahu's Likud tunes. This salad mix can only lead to disaster.

The USSR collapsed due to military overspending. The same will happen to the US. When one looks at the debt situation, it does not require rocket science to predict the collapse will happen soon.

But there is hope, the OWS.

If our knowing government allows Iran to continue testings & eventual launch of their EMP missle,
they will just sit back & watching us destroy ourselves, because without any electricity, this country will nothing.
