First Night State College
This college town, home of the main campus of Pennsylvania State University, hosts First Night State College, a celebration so big it spills out of the downtown area into parts of the adjacent Penn State campus. Ice sculptures -- both large and small -- set this First Night celebration apart from those in other regional cities. The fun begins at 10 a.m., as ice sculptors transform huge blocks of frozen H2O into works of art, and lasts until after the arrival of the new year. Festivities also include musical and vaudeville performances at venues throughout town, carriage rides and a parade of giant papier-mache puppets, while vendors offer carnival-type fare and nonalcoholic beverages. First Night State College also holds the 5K Resolution Run, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. This alcohol-free celebration offers something for every member of the family, and admission is free.
New Year's Eve In Hershey
The hometown of Hershey's chocolate welcomes the new year with a family-friendly celebration that culminates at midnight "when an oversized Hershey's Kiss drops from the sky," according to the Travel Channel. The heart of New Year's Eve in Hershey is the town square at the intersection of Chocolate and Park avenues, and the festivities get under way at 9 p.m. Live performances by regional bands and Disney Channel personalities are staged in and around the square. Admission to this celebration is free, and vendors sell fast-food fare and beverages at stands throughout the area. Once the Hershey's Kiss has dropped, a spectacular fireworks display brings the festivities to a close.
First Night Scranton
The City of Scranton, in the northeastern corner of the Keystone State, kicks off the new year with a free public celebration in Courthouse Square, located in the heart of the city perhaps best known as the setting for NBC's The Office. First Night Scranton is an alcohol-free gala designed to offer entertainment that will appeal to family members of all ages. The festivities commence at 6 p.m. with live performances in and around Courthouse Square and come to a climax at midnight with a fireworks display to greet the new year's arrival. Revelers who get hungry or thirsty can purchase fast-food fare and nonalcoholic beverages from vendors scattered throughout the Courthouse Square area.
