Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich Talk Nuclear Weapons, Military Action Against Iran (VIDEO)

Newt Gingrich

First Posted: 11/22/11 09:53 PM ET Updated: 11/23/11 12:47 AM ET

Mitt Romney said his first trip, if he is president, will be to Israel, "to show the world we care about that country and that region."

Romney did not say whether he would help Israel launch an attack on Iran to stop Tehran from getting nuclear weapons, because inexplicably he wasn't asked. Romney did say that he favors "crippling sanctions" and indicting Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the United Nations for inciting genocide.

Romney said he knows that further sanctions on Iran would increase the price of energy, but said "there is no price that is worthy of an Iranian nuclear weapon."

Newt Gingrich was asked if he would take military action against Iran, and said he would with one caveat: it would have to lead to regime change.

But Gingrich added: "If my choice was to collaborate with the Israelis on a conventional campaign or force them to use their nuclear weapons, it would be an extraordinarily dangerous world if out of a sense of being abandoned they went nuclear and used multiple nuclear weapons in Iran. That would be a future none of us would want to live through."

Hey what ever happened to oil prices here in the USA staying around the $2.00 a gallon range? As I recall one of the reasons to attack Iraq was to make sure the supply of cheap oil would continue... now at $3.90 a gallon I guess that didn't work out.... Whatever happened to the WMD's?? Oh yea great media campaign convinced America, but allas none.... Now when any American tells any Israllie that Iraq is a democracy we are laughed at... Still Israel isn't the only democracy in the ME anymore... But what did all this cost America in lives and tax dollars??? Not only was Bush mistaken to attack Iraq, but now we have Presidential candidates telling the world how happy they would be to attack Iran... Iran can not NUKE AMERICA!!! and their oil isn't comming to the USA so whats the problem... Maybe, Israel needs to be nicer to it's neighbors and stop all the hate! WAKE UP AMERICA BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

"Indicting Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the United Nations for inciting genocide"?
I don't like Ahmadinejad but accusations related to genocide shouldn't be used so lightly. The Iranian government didn't act directly against Israel and has not been part of any genocide.

Considering what happened in 1953 (a coup in Iran organised by BP, Eisenhower and the CIA) and what was the result (25 years of dictatorship and political repression followed by a revolution that created the theocracy), anything else would be better than an attempt of regime change in Iran by a republican administration.

The Navy leadership and most other military leadership is against an armed attack on Iran. The U.S. fleet in the Gulf is highly vulnerable to Iranian missiles and we could loose capital ships including our an aircraft carrier. The only way to protect the fleet is to have them leave the Gulf which telegraphs the attack. Bombing probably won't take out Iran's nuclear capability and a land attack would be suicidal. There are numerous mountain regions in Iran that no army would want to fight in. Aside from the fact this war would criminal, as a collapsing empire can't afford this war. It would be an economic catastrophe.

Iran can attack the Gulf states and mine the Straits of Hormuz in retaliation. That means no oil and think immediate worldwide depression. We also seriously anger China, India and a host of other countries. The Republicans proposing attacks on Iran are proposing national suicide.

The interesting question is, why do American (and Israeli) politicians think that they can attack Iran's IAEA inspected, NNPT compliant nuclear facilities, without Iran taking the opportunity to take out Israel's uninspected (illegal, in the parlance that was used when the non-IAEA inspected facilities were in Iraq) nuclear sites?

(As for Iran attacking the Gulf states, it most likely will start by bombing flat all the US bases in those states, then only bombing military units that try and violently put down the uprisings against the dictatorships. That'll leave them with most of all that American (and French etc) supplied military hardware in the hands of friendly governments, and all they'd have to do is send a few techs to replace/reprogram the IFF systems in the planes and missiles with ones that will treat American and Israeli planes and vehicles as the hostile forces, and maybe a few other upgrades, to have allies who could actually join in the fight.

China has already said that if the US attacks Iran, it would have to come in on the side of Iran.

We're already a dying Republic. Apparently the GOP wants to hasten our demise.

When I read the headlines I thought he was going to say a future without janitorial jobs or orphanages for poor children was one we wouldn't want to live through.

Nah. No thanks. I wont be supporting israel.

If israel attacks Iran and contaminates the country with radioactive fallout from Iranian reactors, I would hope Iran responds with a proportionate, decisive and measured response against israels nuclear program and weapons sites. and good luck to them.

Iran is one of the few countries in the world who's population has suffered chemical and biological attack killing tens of thousands of people.

It has never attacked a neighbor in nearly 300 years. israel is obsessed with regional hegemony and attacks a new neighbor every 18 months.

I am with you. Politicians seem to be falling over themselves to embrace Israel. It is an embarrassing and sick spectacle to watch. The average American politician doesn't give a hoot about what is good for America and the planet. They only worry about reelection and who is giving them money and support. The so called pro-Israeli lobby is right in line with the banks and big oil working hard to corrupt the American political process.

The sad thing is about half of Israelis vehemently disagree with Bibi's government and tatics and think he makes them less safe. They can have a vigorous dicussion of these issues in Israel but we aren't allowed to do that in the US.

Frankly, there are a lot of Israeli's who wish the US would just butt out and give them a chance to vote in a reasonable regime.

Personally, don't need to buy those stocks.

Here in Alberta, a hike in oil prices means a hike in the value of a house, and raises all around (plus bigger bonuses)

The whole purpose of getting involved in both of the last two so called wars was to gain Military Bases in the region. A quick look at any map will show you that we now have Military Bases of Operation on two sides of Iran. If need be we could attack from both sides and with long range weapons also. It would make it almost impossible for Iran to defend against it. I personally believe we should bring all of our troops home and that it is not necessary to have these bases or to Nation Build either. I believe we can do anything necessary to Iran with our long range weapon systems and with the help of Israel. We do not have to put ground troops in danger just as a show of force or to Nation Build in a Country that is filled with people who hate us. Bring them home and if necessary let Isreal blow Iran to hell and back. Iran has said they only want to totally destroy Israel. Israel has the right to exist and to defend it's self. Iran and North Korea are the real dangers to the peace of the world. We should be supporting our allies and not our enemies.

Thanks for that link. I've had other links parsing Ahmadinejad's sentences word by word, translated by experts, with the context clearly explained. Have lost track of those links, so this one is welcome.

However, I'm afraid this idea is so embedded in the American mind now that it doesn't matter what proof you provide, you won't be believed.

I speak Farsi, or used to many years ago, and have a number of Iranian friends. They, too, agree that the translation was just completely inaccurate, and in fact if the context was ever quoted, that would have been made more clear.

The problem with trying to fight an Iraq style war against Iran is that Iran can fire back with long range weapons, and those weapons won't be drawn from a limited stockpile of surplussed old American ones, they'll be rolling out of factories, and being updated and modified on the fly to take advantage of what was learned in the previous days exchanges.
09:59 AM on 11/25/2011
That is why you take out command and control along with defense systems first and then destroy the very types of weapons abilities you have discribed. Iran can not match our weapons systems and Russia is not crazy enough to give them first line weapons either. Why do you think it was so easy to run through Iraq. Iraq had beaten Iran with little or no effort. Niether you nor I have any idea of the weapons systems that the US has not even used yet and have available if necessary. Those so called black programs have not stopped and things have been developed you can not even dream of.

Nor their children...if these folks, are people like the Bushes and the Cheneys had to have their own children serving in these wars that they created, you can bet your boots that these wars would probably have been avoided. In that neither the Bushes nor the Cheneys nor the Romneys will ever have to serve in wars like these, it doesn't bother their consciences at all to have other folks' children do the fighting...

Actually, given the odds (based on who's been starting wars lately), it will be the US or Israel who starts it (though I'm sure you'll patridiotically believe that Iran started it)
02:32 PM on 11/23/2011
Iranian leadership has already stated that if they had nuclear weapons, they would use them to wipe Israel off the map. And, now it appears that they WILL have them. If you were Israel, what would you do?

Just when did they make such a statement??? Show it to back your claim, I know they never made such a statement and that is not their position. Here's president Ahm. in his own words on Isr. & Pales.:

Hey Mitt will any of your children serve in the war that you want?
02:54 PM on 11/23/2011
The political actions have strongly suggested that serving in the military is not one of the smartest things one can do. Frankly, I think one of the fairest things this country could do is start the draft again and if one's number comes up, no exceptions. However, even though we call this a dmecracy, there are a lot of things similar to royality in that thems with money do not have to do unless they choose to do so.

Will Willards (Romney) children serve itn the war his father wants in Iran? Or will they stay home like he did during Nam. Five adult children and not one in the military...shame on you Mute.....As for Iran they are not a threat to us......let Isreal take care of their enemy. If and when the bomb goes off in either Pakistan, Isreal, N. Korea be prepared for Armegedon...it will not stop with one then if any of the big boys get in the world as we know it will disappear. Any of right wing nuts who are urging the use of nukes will regret it.....guaranteed!
02:44 PM on 11/23/2011
Everyone would regret it. And, no one wants to nuke Iran, but to use sanctions (serious ones first) to try to turn thier course. But, If Iran gets the nuke, it is clear (because they themselves have said it many times) that they would use it pre-emtively on Israel, simply because they dont like them. And that, cannot be allowed.
