Is Pepper Spray Dangerous To Health?

Over the weekend, Lieutenant John Pike was photographed casually pepper spraying peaceful Occupy Wall Street protesters at UC Davis, turning himself into a full-blown meme and symbol of police brutality. Thanks to artist James Alex, the subjects in paintings have probably become his most famous victims, but the truth is, there's growing concern for what pepper spray -- casual or not -- might do to the health of real-life protesters.

By many accounts, the name "pepper spray" is overly benign for a substance that can cause death and be used as a torture device. Deborah Blum wrote at Scientific American:

...we've taken to calling it pepper spray, I think, because that makes it sound so much more benign than it really is, like something just a grade or so above what we might mix up in a home kitchen. The description hints maybe at that eye-stinging effect that the cook occasionally experiences when making something like a jalapeno-based salsa, a little burn, nothing too serious.

But take Jeniffer Fox, a 19-year-old Seattleite who recently suffered a miscarriage, less than a week after she sustained injuries during police action at an OWS protest earlier this month, including the use of pepper spray. (The photograph on the right, taken by Josh Trujillo, shows Fox being rushed to an ambulance on November 15.) Her situation makes it clear that pepper spray shouldn't be held in the same class as hot sauce. She seemed fine the night of the police actions, but miscarried her baby on Sunday the 20th. Fox told Seattle's Stranger:

"Everything was going okay until yesterday, when I started getting sick, cramps started, and I felt like I was going to pass out," Fox says.

A friend called for an ambulance near the community college campus. (Fox says she has been camping with Occupy Seattle since it first began in Westlake Park. She is homeless and says, "I don't have a place. This is the place I call home.") When she arrived at Harborview at 11:00 a.m., she says, a doctor told her that "there was no heartbeat" from the baby. "They diagnosed that I was having a miscarriage. They said the damage was from the kick and that the pepper spray got to it [the fetus], too."

As for joining the protests, she says, "I was worried about it, but I didn't know it would be this bad. I didn't know that a cop would murder a baby that's not born yet... I am trying to get lawyers."

While there's no hard proof that her miscarriage was directly caused by pepper spray, it doesn't seem unreasonable to think that it could be harmful to a developing fetus, given the dangers it brings to fully grown adults.

To start, here's a quick primer on the ingredients in pepper spray that could be harmful to your health:

- Pepper spray's main active ingredient is oleoresin capsicum (OC) -- oil extracted from a genus of peppers known as capsicum (the same kinds of peppers used in salsa, spices, and even some analgesics). But the strength can vary widely between pepper spray brands (the health effects can vary just as much).
- Depending on the brand, pepper spray can also contain water, alcohols, or organic solvents as a carrier for OC. They can also contain nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or halogenated hydrocarbons as propellants. Some of these chemicals can have serious cardiac, respiratory and neurologic effects when inhaled in high doses.

And here's a quick rundown of what OC can do to various parts of your body (information mostly taken from this University of North Carolina and Duke University research paper):

- Skin - Skin exposure to pepper spray can cause intense pain, burning and even blistering of the skin. It worsens skin conditions like allergic dermatitis, and in severe cases, it can cause hypothermia.

- Eyes - OC causes a burning pain in the eyes, inflammation and involuntary closing of the eyelids. In extreme cases it can cause temporary blindness. It can also cause longer-term eye damage thanks to sustained loss of blink reflex and/or anesthesia, which can cause corneal abrasions from contact lenses or other foreign material.

- Respiratory System - Pepper spray often causes a burning throat, wheezing, gagging, and difficulty breathing. In extreme cases, it can cause "laryngospasm," which leads to an inability to speak or breathe. For those with asthma, exposure to OC can even cause death.

While many of the effects are short-term, some of them are serious enough that the American Civil Liberties Union asked the California Court of Appeals to consider the use of pepper spray as dangerous and cruel, following its use in a 1999 protest. ("The ACLU believes that the use of pepper spray as a kind of chemical cattle prod on nonviolent demonstrators resisting arrest constitutes excessive force and violates the Constitution," wrote an ACLU lawyer.)

How to avoid pepper spray: Disperse as asked.
How to guarntaee being peppered sprayed: Don't disperse as asked.
If you decide to confront legal authority and end up being pepper sprayed then don't come whining. That's what your mothers' are for.

Lt. Pike's behavior indicates severe psychological problems. An officer that displays sadistic and cruel tendencies should be fired. He damages the reputation of all police officers. If police presence is necessary it is for protection and situation control, not to brutally injure the public they're supposed to protect. Ignorance abounds. Fox News ridiculed complaints of brutality, saying pepper spray is a food product. So is mustard gas.

Pity you didn't just link to the Scientific American article, HP, rather than posting this peculiar mishmash of an "article". Pepper spray is serious stuff and its use by law enforcement on the public deserves serious reporting--not this kind of mishmash of fact and outright silly speculation.

10 people died from allergic reactions from eating Peanuts last year. Only 26 died from pepper spray over a three year period which makes peanuts more dangerous than pepper spray.
02:55 PM on 11/23/2011
Yea but you aren't converting peanut extract into a concentrated aresol form and spraying it into a crowd and/or forcing people to ingest it. Hardly a fair comparison.

07:49 AM on 11/24/2011
A lot more people eat peanuts than get pepper sprayed..it is always the ratio that counts..
We can safely assume that at least 100 million people ate peanuts in some form last year, (probably a lot more, but let's go with that) so even if we assume that 10,000 people were pepper sprayed, which hopefully is not the case, the ratio of peanut-eaters to pepper sprayed people is 10,000:1 so the death ratio should be the same ration to be equally dangerous.. that means that in every 1000 years 10,000 people would die from peanut allergies and there should be 1 death from pepper sprays.

Kicking a pregnant woman?

I guess the question is... Who trained these police officers to behave this way???
Who told them that this is ok?

They need to keep the peace and protect the public.

lol... sure, as long as it's not your mother, sister, lover, wife, friend...

The problem is when you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail and there is no accountability or checks and balances to ensure that dishonorable and unethical behavior is stopped.

As for keeping the peace, bullchit.
The police are not keeping the peace, the #OWS folks are doing that themselves...
Who is going to protect the public from the police?

No, pepper spray is great. It actually clears out the sinuses very effectively, sometimes for weeks after it is applied, and the symptoms are quickly relieved with the special towelettes made for the purpose. It is safe and humane for repelling bears as well.

"Her situation makes it clear that pepper spray shouldn't be held in the same class as hot sauce."

No, it doesn't. Claiming that PEPPER killed a fetus is absurd, and no responsible journalist would even allow the vaguest implication to that effect to be published. Shame on Huffington Post for republishing this blog post from elsewhere.

Police used to use slappers and blackjacks to get you moving along; now they use PEPPER and people are trying to make it sound like "scary chemical weapons." Grow up.

The use of 'slappers' and 'blackjacks' to get peaceful protestors "moving along" is both unconstitutional and flat-out WRONG....replacing one bad and unconstitutional tactic with another bad and unconstitutional tactic doesn't make either tactic right. Police that batter and abuse citizens merely to maintain 'order' dishonor their sworn 'oath' and highest duty to 'protect the public' - they become no more than 'prison guards' enforcing rules on a populace that has lost both it's freedom and it's Rights

I think you may have overlooked or forgotten the fact that police officers are sworn to uphold the law. Not just the laws that you like.

Your response is a good example why HP should have posted a more scientific article. Not that you'd bother to read it. Clearly, you didn't click on any of the links to learn what this mishmash article omits. Pepper spray is indeed a chemical weapon. If you don't think so, feel free to spray some on your food. Bon Appetit.

No. Wait. Wait! Seriously: DON'T TRY THAT. I couldn't wish that on even you.

Wow, can't believe how many people are so willing to give up their first amendment rights. Justifying it because they were blocking the sidewalk. People could go around them, it may have caused some inconvenience but not enough to warrant the treatment they got. How many times are sidewalks blocked everday for reasons much less important than exercising your right to protest government policy? Yet they don't seem to break out the pepper spray for that otherwise it would happen at most sporting events.

If it is OK to pepper spray someone for obstructing a sidewalk...what are they going to do during black friday?

Why don't you read up on it, it helps to have a somewhat informed opinion..

"Studies of the effects of capsaicin on human physiology, anecdotal experience with field use of pepper spray, and controlled exposure of correctional officers in training have shown adverse effects on the lungs, larynx, middle airway, protective reflexes, and skin. Behavioral and mental health effects also may occur if pepper spray is used abusively.

Pepper spray use has been suspected of contributing to a number of deaths that occurred in police custody. In mid-1990s, the U.S. Department of Justice cited nearly 70 fatalities linked to pepper-spray use.. The ACLU report cited 26 suspicious deaths; it’s important to note that most involved pre-existing conditions such as asthma. But it’s also important to note a troubling pattern."

"But as pointed out in the 2004 paper, Health Hazards of Pepper Spray, written by health researchers at the University of North Carolina and Duke University, the sprays contain other risky materials:

Depending on brand, an OC spray may contain water, alcohols, or organic solvents as liquid carriers; and nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or halogenated hydrocarbons (such as Freon, tetrachloroethylene, and methylene chloride) as propellants to discharge the canister contents.(3) Inhalation of high doses of some of these chemicals can produce adverse cardiac, respiratory, and neurologic effects, including arrhythmias and sudden death."
