Jerry Seinfeld And Larry David Speculate On Natalie Wood Case (VIDEO)

First Posted: 11/23/11 11:16 AM ET Updated: 11/23/11 11:21 AM ET

Forget filling in for Regis, Jerry Seinfeld might have a new job as a case-cracking gumshoe.

Amid the renewed speculation over Natalie Wood's mysterious death, Slate's Brow Beat Blog thought back to an apt conversation between Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld during season seven of "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Of course, the comic geniuses did not mean to end up speculating on the status of Wood's death. It was -- as it always is -- a tangent within a tangent.

But still, we must admire Seinfeld's ability to sniff out suspicious activity.

Since the case has been re-opened, however, Christopher Walken has taken proactive measures and hired a lawyer.

Wow.

I don't believe at all a woman, drunk or not, who can't swim and scared shitless of water would try to secure a dinghy. I don't have evidence though and neither do they, it's just a theory. What we do know for sure, is Wagner did absolutely nothing to try and find her. That alone, regardless of how she got into the water or whether he saw her in the water, is disgusting.

But you believe she'd board the boat in the first place? Her fear of water gets vastly over-stated, I think. I've seen that video clip of her sounding sweet and demure like Jackie Kennedy, and get the sense its a bit of overstatement.

The sensationalism of the case, coupled with the bizarre fact she stated the fear publically, makes her sound hysterical. But she didn't have an irrational fear of deep water, a crippling phobia. She had a rational fear of deep water. She couldn't swim.

Also, that characterization of Wagner comes from the captain of this ship who admitted to lying on a police testimony. Either way, he's an admitted liar; the question just becomes, did he lie then or is he lying now?

Another good question: Why would Walken lie? He was her friend, her co-star, not Wagner's. Walken argued to Wood that she should do more to further her career, to Wagner's chagrin as he wanted more time with her. That makes me doubt the captain's testimony. Walken also has said Wagner apologized. We could postulate for Wagner a motive of, "If I can't have her, nobody can!" But that doesn't explain a believable motivation for Walken to back Wagner's version of events.

I think Christopher Walken genuinely believes that's what happened to Wood--that she went to secure the dinghy. Wagner's guilt is a separate question, and without proof, I will certainly not damn him.

I really hope they solve what happened that night...I just started reading on my Kindle the memoir, NATALIE, A MEMOIR BY HER SISTER, LANA WOOD. My parents were huge fans of Natalie Wood and I remember hearing about her tragic death when I was little. I know the facts are right because it's coming from Natalie's sister who lived those events with her, not some writer who came in after the fact.

You shouldn't assume that Lana's book is the whole truth. The best book on Natalie is Natasha by Suzanne Finstad. Lana's got her own axes to grind.

I love Larry David so much. He tries so desperately to be funny, but he never is.

I love watching people like himself try to pass himself off as a humorist, when he is a total failure.

"a total failure"

Sure. You keep telling yourself that. Funny, how millions of people, his TV, cable deals and syndication contracts point to the exact opposite of your statement.

And you have succeeded so profoundly at....what???
10:33 AM on 11/26/2011
I succeeded in not being a failure like you, you pitiful miscreant.

Yes, I don't get unfunny people like Larry.

Jerry needs to get on his knees and thank Larry David every day. Without him he would be the third rate stand up he always was. He's taken over the role as Pope of Comedy but all he did was make money off of David's talent. Marriage Ref? Filling in for Regis... badly. Go buy your Porshes, just go away.

Larry David is the most unfunny person in the world.

just gotta know who you think is the most funny person in the world... to come out and pan someone who makes millions being pretty, pretty, pretty funny implies that you have a pretty hefty self-satisfaction. So, who makes ya' laugh?

Robert Wagner wrote in a book that he was jealous of Warren Beatty and Wagner said he spent a night sitting outside the actors house with a gun while Beatty entertained Wood inside. He said he came close to making the final decision to kill Beatty.

The usual limit for being drunk in most states .08. She was 1.4 which is sloppy drunk especially for a small woman,
