Thanksgiving Turkeys: Celebrating The Living Animals (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 11/24/11 11:53 AM ET   Updated: 11/29/11 01:45 PM ET

An estimated 46 million turkeys will be killed for Thanksgiving dinner in the U.S. this year, according to Farm Sanctuary.

The site describes the conditions many turkeys must endure: "The overcrowded birds, who are unable to comfortably move, or exhibit natural behaviors, are driven to excessive pecking and fighting. Rather than alter the birds' living space to prevent these injurious behaviors, producers cut off the ends of the turkeys' beaks and toes, practices know as debeaking and detoeing."

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) writes turkeys are intelligent animals who even enjoy listening and singing along to music. On their site they write Benjamin Franklin had a great respect for the Thanksgiving birds which he called the "true American originals."

During the 1600's, there were reportedly many wild turkeys in New York, and then they were almost driven to extinction through habitat loss. They were re-established in the 1950's in the southwest portion of the state, according to the College of Environmental Science and Forestry. In 2010, USA Today reported "7 million wild turkeys live in 49 states."

There are a number of ways to improve the treatment of turkeys today, including through "adoption," and PETA offers some delicious vegetarian and vegan options so that you can enjoy your Thanksgiving turkey-free.

Cute? The chicks are for a couple of days but the adults are about the ugliest critters I've ever seen. Their feathers are great but those faces -- they look they have some horrible disease. I think the next time they make a dinosaur movie they should show the velociraptors and all those other predators with faces like turkeys. Now that would be scary!

"ugly" is a personalized term... in the eye of the beholder.
Perhaps humans are atrocious to the eyes of the turkey as well.
They are beautiful to me.

I think they are cute, and I would never kill them, I don't eat meat, because I love all animals, except snakes, but I would not eat them either lol I could never kill an animal, if my life depended on it.

Turkeys are by no mean "cute" lol my in-laws have some and they are not cute..at all. Turkey chicks are the only cute ones. They have huge eyes compared to their body size, but I thnk that's what makes them cute lol.

Turkeys are not very smart... They can drown themselves when it rains if they stare up at the sky. It can and does happen. I didn't believe it could happen til I actually saw it.

Fact is , in todays world,,,, meats are raised for profit not humanity.
And the animals intelligence has nothing to do with decision to raises them..
Wild turkeys are very smart. Some smarter than most people..

I was talking about domestic ones and some people do care for the animals we raise. It's normally the mega farms that don't care.

When we were kids we raised one turkey per year for slaughter, along with some ducks. Money was tighter back then. Raising animals for slaughter seemed very natural.

We do the same now... but all the animal rights activists act like it's a crime to even eat them.
