Americans Are 20 Pounds Heavier Today Than Two Decades Ago: Report

20 Pounds Heavier

The Huffington Post   Posted: 11/25/2011 5:59 pm

Americans are reporting that they weigh, on average, about 20 pounds more than they did 20 years ago, according to a new report from Gallup.

The findings, based on the annual Gallup Health and Healthcare Survey, show that men are reporting they weigh 196 pounds on average and women are reporting they weigh 160 pounds on average, up nearly 20 pounds from self-reported weights in 1990.

In addition, our "ideal weight" has also increased -- for men, it is now 181 pounds (up from 177 pounds a decade ago), and for women, it is now 138 pounds (up from 137 a decade ago), according to the report.

The findings also indicate that most Americans consider their weight as "just-right" -- despite a previous Gallup report showing that 61.6 percent of people in the U.S. are overweight or obese. In that previous Gallup report, published last month, researchers found that obesity rates were slightly decreasing for most U.S. demographic groups, although there are still fewer normal weight people in the U.S. than there are obese and/or overweight people.

Earlier this year, a report in the Lancet suggested that half of Americans will be obese by the year 2030 if obesity and overweight trends continue as they are now.

"At the rate we're looking at right now, it's a dire prediction," study researcher Claire Wang, of the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, told ABC News. "Something has to be done."

Black people are still the demographic with the highest incidence of obesity, with 35.4 percent obese so far this year. However, the incidence of obesity has decreased from last year, going down 0.6 percent. In 2008, 35.1 percent of these people were obese.

We are what we eat! Eat healthy, live healthy. Weight will take care of itself!! I love you enough to eat right and take care of my body, I only have one. I will do everything in my power to preserve what I have been given, should be an individuals way of thinking! It is with joy that I have that privilege and to take care of my children in that way too. All I can be is responsible for me and my kids. Its been exciting and and eye opening experience researching about healthier eating. Dont get me wrong, I still love to eat a good cheeseburger and my weakness is good french fries haha but I've learned just a few quick tips about what and what not to eat for a healthier body and mind.

Busy schedules of families causing them to eat on the run at local fastfood joints during the past two decades has taken its toll on most. Movies, ballgames and varying entertainment venues sell only fatty, unhealthy type foods that cause weight to skyrocket. The sad aspect is that as weight gain rises so do diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and the like. The old addage, you are what you eat really matters! So unless Americans are willing to change their eating habits, weight and disease associated with gaining weight will not change.

We may soon see "How's my doctoring?" stickers in emergency rooms, operating suites and on the bumpers of ambulances. That's because, as of October 2012, the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) requires patient satisfaction scores to be factored into how much Medicare will pay health care providers.

Americans are heavier than ever yet we've allowed lobbyists to push aside a healthy eating initiative and declare pizza a vegetable? We're ridiculous.

Pizza is an essential food that has taken a bad rap for helping to cause obesity. I wouldn't classify it as a vegetable, unless of course its a vegetarian pizza, a nearly inedible form of nourishment offered to people that don't realize that humans are carnivorous. But don't be alarmed, the FDA once classified ketchup as a vegetable as well.

How, exactly, is pizza an "essential" food?

From the slide display I get that the only way to be skinny is to be an Asian aged 18-25 who makes over $90k ;-)

I realize this is fairly obvious, but did this study account for people being taller (on average) now than they were 20 years ago. Furthermore there are a lot of people who work out and get ripped and are technically overweight because muscle weighs a lot.

I pretty much weigh the same (or less) as I was about 15 years ago (~135lbs for a 5'6 frame). My metabolism has slowed down, but I have gotten into running and try to participate in as many 5k's and half marathons as I can. Improved my pace from 8:10/mi to 7:01/mi in a year. Diet wise, I eat pretty much anything I can lay my hands on.

The last race I ran there were 15,000 participants, which tells me that people are willing to participate as a group, but don't really keep up with it. Even if you are fat, you can lose weight if you are determined and patient.

Thanks to our globally rejected toxic GMO food supply we live with epidemic chronic disease that is directly linked to our harmful food supply.

No surprise, given that we're now adding high fructose corn syrup to everything - such as air.

Interesting survey, but I can't help wonder does this increase have to do with the fact that the Baby Boomer generation ( the majority) got older, experienced Andropause/Menopause, and that the food industry has become a very dirty business that pumps garbage to the masses.
