Joe Paterno's Wife, Sue, Turned Away At Penn State Pool: Source

Sue Paterno Penn State Pool

By GENARO C. ARMAS   11/24/11 12:42 AM ET   AP

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- A person close to former Penn State coach Joe Paterno's family has told The Associated Press his wife was turned away from a campus pool.

Sue Paterno is an avid swimmer known for taking early-morning laps in the pool. The person who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation said Wednesday night the rejection left the family saddened.

A university spokesman said he was unaware of any such directive. The school had said last week that Paterno still held tenure.

School trustees fired Joe Paterno on Nov. 9 from the job he held for nearly a half-century in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Paterno also was recently diagnosed with a treatable form of lung cancer. The person said the coach was focused on beating the illness "and seeing the full truth" emerge.

The Patriot News of Harrisburg first reported the rejection at the pool.

Paterno testified before a grand jury looking into the abuse allegations that a graduate assistant told him in 2002 that he witnessed an incident in the shower in the team locker room. Prosecutors have said Paterno had passed on the information to his superior.

But Paterno has said specific actions alleged to have occurred in the grand jury report were not relayed to him. Paterno is not a target of the investigation, according to authorities.

Still, the state's top cop criticized the way school leaders handled allegations and said Paterno and other officials had a moral responsibility to do more.

The 84-year-old Paterno initially announced his retirement effective at the end of the season, saying that the scandal was "one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more." The trustees fired him anyway, about 12 hours later.

His son, Scott, said last week in a statement that Joe Paterno's cancer was diagnosed during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness. He requested privacy for the family.

Paterno's former players appeared to be heeding the request. Right tackle Chima Okoli said this week that the team knows Paterno doesn't want sympathy. No. 20 Penn State plays at No. 15 Wisconsin this weekend with a berth in the inaugural Big Ten title game at stake.

Paterno is Division I's winningest coach with 409 victories.

"We're focusing on Wisconsin," linebacker Nate Stupar said Tuesday. "(But) definitely we've been thinking about him, and we're hoping he's doing all right, and just praying for him."

The person close to the Paterno family told the AP that Paterno was receiving thousands of calls or messages from former players, alumni and other well-wishers, and that Paterno was encouraging patience and to trust in the truth.

Sue Paterno was a longtime fixture at the school and helped raise money for the library and organized Special Olympics on campus.

From a Penn State student: she was turned away because EVERYONE was turned away. The McCoy Natatorium is undergoing pretty severe renovations in the coming weeks so that we may host a proper diving team. The renovations were planned for a long time before recent events.

This is just another instance of the media jumping on topics before checking the validity of the data.

If she was turned away it was because she did not have the authority to use the pool. She's certainly not a student; she's not even an employee. For too long wives of big shot professors have been throwing their weigh around trying to get stuff for free, in this case use the pool. It's time they be sent a clear message, if you don't have legal authority to use the pool, go to the Y for your swimming needs.

It's not generally a matter of wives or husbands of professors "throwing their weight around . . . to get stuff for free," CamelPaw. Most universities have clearly spelled out policies allowing staff and their families, including retirees, to use specific facilities like pools, gyms and libraries. If they don't allow for that, then that's spelled out someplace, too. I grew up swimming at two university pools because my parents were professors there.

"Why didn't they let her take her final laps? Then when she finished, tell her to leave her keys or what ever. The way they turned her away publicly wasn't sensitive. Her husband caused all this mess. I feel worse for all the victims. They have to live with this for the rest of their lives."

Jerry Sandusky caused this mess not Paterno. Get the facts straight. Joe found out through hearsay and reported it. Nobody was covering this up, people just didn't do what they were suppose to do. Paterno has been everyone's scapegoat. Man I can not believe you are that blind. Maybe you shouldn't believe all that the media is telling you. He reported it maybe he could have done a little more. You act like Joe was the one doing all of these acts to these poor kids. Man u r blind!!!

I don't know the reason but she is blameless in this mess---thye shoul dleave her alone.

I agree. I'm as angry as everyone else about this, but I'm not convinced she should be shunned?
12:45 PM on 11/26/2011
It isn't sad that Paterno was fired or that his wife can no longer use the pool. What's sad is that Joe Paterno could have prevented the abuse of a dozen or so kids by being diligent and following through with his initial reporting of the incident.

85 years old or not, cancer or not, there is just no excuse for this.
01:02 PM on 11/26/2011
Prosecutors knew about these allegations and didn't arrest Sandusky. They knew for years. So by ur logic these prosecutors Are guilty as well. Paterno did what he was legally obligated to do. You weren't in his position so u can't say what u would or would not have done.

I think most people could say what they would have done...they would have done the right thing and notified the police. Most of us aren't trying to protect an institution as large as Penn State, though. Even in that case, I would hope most people would do the right thing.

It's just a sympathy ploy. The cancer. The canned comments about "pray for the victims." Now they won't even let the poor wife swim in the pool. Of course, it has to be reported by some anonymous source as if was the biggest outrage. Too bad, the children who were victimized didn't have someone watching over them.

Ban Penn State from College football for 10 years and maybe next time somone thinks football is more important than the safety of kids they might think twice. USC got sanctioned for far less.
11:47 AM on 11/26/2011
Joe Paterno "retired" Sandusky in 1999. Sandusky was no longer a part of the football program or an employee of PSU after that date. All his access to the football facilities and all the partnerships with his Second Mile charity were a direct action of the PSU administration and the Board of Trustees, and had nothing to do with Paterno and the football program. Paterno got him out, the administration and the BOT enabled him to remain a part of the PSU community after Paterno got him out. Why should Penn State football be the target here?
02:04 AM on 11/27/2011
I believe Penn State along with othere covered things up. We shall see as this all shakes out.
11:18 AM on 11/26/2011
If the pool is part of the university and Joe no longer works for the university... Why would Sue be allowed to use the facilities... That's all there is to it.
11:22 AM on 11/26/2011
Joe Paterno is still on staff at Penn State as a tenured professor. That's all there is to it.
