Kitten In Pipe Rescued By Police And Firefighters In El Cajon, California (VIDEO)

First Posted: 11/25/11 01:25 PM ET Updated: 11/25/11 01:25 PM ET

Rescuing a kitten probably wasn't how this group of police and firefighters were planning to spend their Thanksgiving.

But for over three hours on Thursday, a team of rescuers in El Cajon, California dedicated their time to saving a cat stuck in an electrical plastic pipe.

According to KFMB/CNN, the kitten's cries were heard around 4 a.m. on Thursday, when the cat fell several feet down the pipe.

KABC reports that multiple methods were attempted to draw out the kitten, but ultimately they saved the cat with a makeshift catchpole made of wire and cables.

Not only was the cat rescued, but she also found a new home -- one of the officers with the El Cajon Police Department decided to adopt her.

This isn't the first animal to be rescued from a pipe. Over the summer, firefighters in Redding, California rescued a kitten from a 2-inch pipe by cutting the pipe to set him free. Last winter, a dog was rescued from a pipe by ... another dog, who spotted the stuck pooch and alerted his owner.

If you want to help an animal needing a home, visit Petfinder.com or the ASPCA website.

Good for them. I love all my dogs but arguably my all time favorite was originally an abandoned stray puppy we found on the street.

So I bet that officer who adopted the kitten will have the best cat ever. Animals know when you saved their lives, and they're really grateful.

If I were a member of the police dept. it would be stories like this that would keep me going. Every once in a while something totally pure happens, and I'd wager it restores the rescuers as well as the rescued.

Thanks to the firefighters who rescued this little helpless critter. I just wish people could take a break for even ONE second to stop their political comments and worrying how many dollars it cost to save this animal. Have we lost all compassion...?

Maybe we should have left it there to die Rondohatton or Zerocoke or Melville....???

I was happy to see some sort of good news in the world...until I started seeing these deplorable comments.

Loki, I just clicked on and from your comment right above, I think I will not venture further(thus ruining the story by reading vitriole). The precious "mew" of a fightened little life and frankly very COOL that one of the officers decided that little cat was his to take home. I love that; he has a story to tell and she's the proof. What a great day. We, as humans, need our feelgood moments. This was one. I will fan you since you simply see a happy story when it magically appears. Be well Loki.

...and then according to many protestors who despise law enforcement officers across the nation, after the police rescued the kitten, they ate it.

The only protesters I know that Despise police are the ones getting shot in the face with rubber bullets and the tea party people who think they don't need to spend their tax dollars funding socialist ideas like public safety.

the reason the country and many cities in the usa are cash-strapped is because of misplaced priorities like this.

This is not misplaced priority. It may be for you because you are basically very selfish. The benefits of the nation are to be enjoyed not only by its human citizens but also by its four-legged citizens. It is good that for once we can read a heart-warming story of police officers rescuing an animal. More often we read of police officers killing animals like they did in the Zanesville(Ohio) massacre. This is a very encouraging story.

Do you actually think (well, there's the first snafu..) for a nano-second that if they'd been a radio call for assault, etc. the officers would not have left the kitty and maybe returned lated?
You are a danger. You assume they disregarded a 911 fatal car wreck to help the kitten. Why not accept that radios on, they tried and succeeded in helping the kitten. For all you know, later that day they DID face violence.

By the way. Please find the stats of tax money spent rescuing kittens or puppies from pipes. If it's the same as one day in Iraq, I'll absolutely agree with you. Oh..just an afterthought; cities are cash-strapped not because of kittens, but rather Goldman Sachs, Wachovia, forclosures, CMO's, CBO's, Prop. 13 (in CA), mismanagement and yes too many city council people who are as paid for as Congress and a global economic meltdown, which brings us back to Goldman, JPM, CountryWide...and Reagan AND B. Clinton. Wake up and smell the trickle down. Did your home burn down while they rescued the kitten? ME thinks the barkeep is dipping into the product. ba bye..

all that for one tiny animal sigh there are too many dogs and cats already the things breed like salmon even if it had died i doubt anyone would really care..... I have compassion but rescuing animals is really not their job......

Mr Melville your post indicates that you are a heartless, selfish person. I'd rather say that there are far too many human brutes that are on this planet and destroying it. It's good that the police officers for once were engaged in saving an animal. Normally they are quick to kill an animal like they did in Zanesville this year. Humans are breeding faster than salmon and that is why even the oceans are being emptied of fish! If police do not rescue animals then who will because most people are just like you - indifferent to animals. Let not America become stonehearted.

It was an act of compassion. That one of the officers took the kitten as his own tells you that in the world they usually face (guns, violence)..this was a small but very nice success. I do hope the officer spays the kitten..yes..people who don't are on the bottom of heap.

outa.. PLEASE tell me you are being honest. I get frightened at my own cynicism sometimes.
It WAS a small act of kindness and an officer has a new little family member and they have a nice story to share ^--^
