Green Holiday: Gifts For An Eco-Friendly Season

First Posted: 11/26/11 10:30 PM ET   Updated: 11/28/11 12:12 PM ET

From dealsnews' contributor Lou Carlozo:

The holidays will soon be upon us, and where you get your toys may not be of that much concern to you, so long as you grab a bargain. Green Dad certainly has sympathy for the bargain hunter in us all.

But if you follow the news, you know that every holiday season delivers toy recalls at a clip that rivals Santa's fastest reindeer. Among the scariest was the lead paint recalls on Chinese-made toys in 2007 — which I remember well, since my kids had lots of Thomas the Tank Engine trains that we had to check for the suspect stuff.

It's not just safety, but a love of the environment (and teaching kids about it) that leads me to recommend these seven eco-friendly toys. From flying discs to windmills, lots of options exist (many of them American-made) to make this season bright with eco-smarts.

The Green Toys EcoSaucer

Green Dad's always been a sucker for flying discs and frisbees, and this particular Green Toys saucer comes in a very nifty shade of lime. At a price you can't beat ($6.99 with free shipping, a low by $3) from aSavings via Buy.com, and made from 100% recycled plastic grocery bags, this model soars above the rest for its love of Mother Earth. It weighs about 130 grams, and it sure beats trying to make your own disc out of those pesky grocery bags.

Here's another idea for a great "green" gift... www.LiveGoodInc.com sells an incredible line of 100% certified organic linens. Elegant sateen sheets and duvets, pretty pleated pillows, and cute kid's pillows with little animals on them! They are so beautiful, and earth-friendly too!

Love the idea of going green for gifts and the holidays. We have the wind power science kit - it hasn't been a big hit but maybe that is our son. Here is a good list of other ways to green-up your holidays including eco-friendly gifts for adults & green decorating ideas. Enjoy!

It's sad when adults seek to inflict their politics on children. "I know you wanted the latest and greatest action figure but I had a tree planted in your name in the middle of the Sahara instead." Let kids be kids.

Decent ideas, but I'd still prefer to buy something made & sold LOCALLY and skip Amazon et al.

The TickleMe Plant Greenhouse is sure to be a hit as "Green Educational Product" in it you can grow a real house plant that moves and closes its fern like leaves when Tickled! In minutes the leaves re-open. Search pet TickleMe Plant. My kids love it.

gee I thought this would be about bringing back the sand box.....ah but we don't want the little kiddies to get dirt on their hands...yuck

You need a backyard for a sandbox, not everybody has it and it not a great gift in winter...plus it is hard to make sure the cats in the neighborhood don't consider it their new litter box for Christmas..
