Occupy Los Angeles Plans To Stay At City Hall, Ignore City Deadline To Vacate

LOS ANGELES -- Despite a fast-approaching deadline set by the mayor and police chief, very few of the anti-Wall Street protesters from Occupy Los Angeles had begun breaking down their tents Saturday on the City Hall lawn - and most said they didn't intend to.

The Occupy LA encampment was abuzz with activity, but nearly all of it was aimed at how to deal with authorities come Monday's 12:01 a.m. deadline.

Some handed out signs mocked up to look like the city's notices to vacate, advertising a Monday morning "eviction block party."

Dozens attended a teach-in on resistance tactics, including how stay safe in the face of rubber bullets, tear gas canisters and pepper spray.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced Friday that despite his sympathy for the protesters' cause, it was time for the camp of nearly 500 tents to leave for the sake of public health and safety.

The mayor said the movement is at a "crossroads," and it must "move from holding a particular patch of park to spreading the message of economic justice."

But occupiers did not intend to give up their patch of park too easily.

Will Picard, who sat Saturday in a tent amid his artwork with a "notice of eviction" sign posted outside, said the main organizers and most occupiers he knows intend to stay.

"Their plan is to resist the closure of this encampment and if that means getting arrested so be it," Picard said. "I think they just want to make the police tear it down rather than tear it down themselves."

But some agreed with the mayor that the protest had run its course.

"I'm going," said Luke Hagerman, who sat looking sad and resigned in the tent he's stayed in for a month. "I wish we could have got more done."

Villaraigosa expressed pride that Los Angeles has lacked the tension, confrontation and violence seen at similar protests in other cities. But that peace was likely to get its biggest test on Monday.

Police gave few specifics about what tactics they would use for those who had no intention of leaving.

Chief Charlie Beck said at Friday's news conference that officers would definitely not be sweeping through the camp and arresting everyone just after midnight.

But in an interview with the Los Angeles Times on Sunday, Beck said that despite the lack of confrontations in the camp's two-month run, he was realistic about what must happen.

"I have no illusions that everybody is going to leave," Beck said in an interview with the Times. "We anticipate that we will have to make arrests."

But he added, "We certainly will not be the first ones to apply force."

Ue Daniels, 21, said as an artist he's "as nonviolent as they come" but he planned on resisting removal any way he could.

"I think we'll comply as far as putting our tents on the sidewalk maybe, that's something that's been going around."

But as far as leaving altogether?

"They would probably have to drag me away," he said.

He also suspected that though the general consensus among campers is to stay, he expects many will change their mind once police arrive. "I don't know who's going to stay, you can say something, but you never know until you're in the situation how you're going to react."

When an Occupy Miami member offered evicted protestors vacant apartments in a building he owns in Downtown Miami's Overtown neighborhood, it seemed like the perfect solution: the 'Peace City' space would provide headquarters for the movement and shelter a small faction of the group's most vulnerable members. But it hasn't gone well. Other tenants say the building has become a cesspool of drug use and violence while non-resident Occupy Miami members are trying to distance themselves from the 'radicals' -- all while the two factions are wrestling for control over Occupy Miami's social media sites and future plans.

From the Miami New Times:

The feud between the Overtown occupiers and more mainstream members has only gotten worse. The two factions are now battling for control of Occupy Miami's social media sites. The movement's main Twitter account recently announced it had been "hijacked by a small, non-consensus group of radical members." The Occupy Miami Facebook page was also temporarily hacked by someone inside Peace City. Meanwhile, the Overtown occupation is slowly driving away more moderate members.

"This is a black eye on the Occupy movement," says Shannon Reaze, an Overtown community organizer and Occupy Miami supporter who is now helping tenants move out of Paz's building. "The violence and drugs going on here are way outside of what I thought Occupy stood for. This place is destabilized."

...The supposedly hard-core activists here spend their days drinking and getting high. And as Peace City devolves into lawlessness, the most committed occupiers are leaving. Local landowners and politicians want the place shut down, while cops are suspicious. Yet as long as Paz wants the protesters around, nothing short of a demolition order can keep them out.

WASHINGTON -- Occupy DC has a new lawsuit involving tents on its hands. But it doesn't involve temporary structures in McPherson Square.

Two protesters arrested during a February action outside Merrill Lynch's offices on 15th Street NW near McPherson Square have filed suit against the Metropolitan Police Department, Legal Times reports. (Read the complaint here.)

The plaintiffs, Samuel Dukore and Kelly Canavan, were part of a "targeted occupation" of Merrill Lynch on Feb. 13 where protesters were raising awareness about Merrill Lynch's reportedly close ties with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.). Issa, for his part, claims that the reports of these close ties are "wildly inaccurate."

OWS reports via its website:

After the brutal attack on the attempted re-occupation of Liberty Square by NYPD on the 6-month anniversary of #OWS, a number of Occupiers have relocated their base of occupation to Union Square in midtown Manhattan, a point of convergence for several #OWS protests over the past 6 months.

According to reports on the ground, several dozen people slept in the park after the illegal and violent raid on Liberty Square. Over 70 people remain, now on Day 3. Although tents and tables are still banned, Occupiers have brought blankets and sleeping gear. Many are calling it ¨the new Occupation.¨ In addition to holding General Assemblies, Union Square Occupiers are providing vital jail support for those arrested on #M17 as they are released from NYPD custody. So far, the NYPD has made no attempt to remove Occupiers or prevent them from sleeping in the park.

The woman had the apparent seizure has been identified by the New York Observer as Cecily McMillan:

Cecily McMillan, an Occupy Wall Street activist once profiled in Rolling Stone, suffered a seizure Saturday night during protest action near Zuccotti Park. Many on-scene reported Ms. McMillan had trouble breathing after she was tackled and handcuffed by law enforcement.

A video uploaded to Youtube late Saturday night purports to show the attack. Two women can be heard commenting, “There’s Cecily,” then there is confusion as the police clearly perform a violent take-down on someone in the crowd.

According to Jeff Sharlet’s November, 2011 article about the Occupy Movement, this may be Ms. McMillan’s second violent encounter with police.

The paper reports from last night's chaos at Zuccotti Park:

At one point, a woman who appeared to be suffering from seizures flopped on the ground in handcuffs as bystanders shouted for the police to remove the cuffs and provide medical attention. For several minutes the woman lay on the ground as onlookers made increasingly agonized demands until an ambulance arrived and the woman was placed inside.

By 12:20 a.m., a line of officers pushed against some of the remaining protesters, forcing them south on Broadway, at times swinging batons and shoving people to the ground.

Kobi Skolnick, 30, said that officers pushed him in several directions and that as he tried to walk away, he was struck from behind in the neck. “One of the police ran and hit me with a baton,” he said.

I really wish OWS would stop doing things I don't understand. I really wish they'd try some of the old techniques that never worked in the past. Because when something doesn't work, by golly, we should do more of it! ;^)

30 TONS of trash left behind...3,000 gallons of bio-hazard waste and material...Over $10 MILLIONS in damages...

The OWS protesters have been around for about 70 days, compared to about 1,000 days for the Tea Party Patriots—and so far 4,500 “Occupy” protesters have been arrested for various criminal activities (compared to zero Tea Party arrests).

Occupy Wall Street is calling for a declaration of dependence on government; a call for more government control over our lives. It is the direct opposite of the Declaration of independence that sparked this nation into existence, and it is the direct opposite of the core principles of the modern-day Tea Party movement.

That is the main difference between the Tea Party movement and “Occupy” protesters. WE, like America’s Founders, declare our independence from government. The Occupy Wall Street protesters declare their dependence on government.

Just what America needs. More taxpayer handouts.

The Tea Party knew how to avoid arrest. They simply stayed on the side of those in power. Why would they get arrested for that?

In hindsight this protest which has been demonized by media, conservatives and others, seem to have gone on much longer, in many cities, with many participants. This is and was one of the largest and longest protests in a number of years. I think the reality is that his is only the beginning. There are many, many angry people. Each day we learn something new about the government and banks cozy relationship, their continued greed, etc. It is adding fuel to an already frustrated electorate. The business greed is going to have to be managed by the government. There is no way around it, if we want to have a functioning high quality society. I continued to be amazed that greed, which is suppose to be a sin isn't it? Some things in ancient times were spot on when you think about it. I have never understood the public's tolerance for no limit to how rich someone should be.
10:04 PM on 11/28/2011
Your last sentence... not understanding the public's tolerance for no limit to how rich someone should be... begs the question of.. In your opinion.. how much money should a person be allowed to have? I'm honestly asking this and not trolling you or picking a fight. I want your honest opinion on how rich is too rich.

The OWS movement simply put is a hodge podge of disgruntled citizens with a myriad of gripes. What the people on the ground fail to realize is the organizations DRIVING the movement. Ah the smell of communism in the morning...still stinks of failure. The reason we do not all achieve equally is we are all not equals no matter what lies you have been told. The truth is, we are not equally gifted nor are we born into equal familial opportunities. Even if all of our parents WERE financially equal...within a generation the same gaps would emerge because some will strive for success building, innovating and creating useful and desired products, and some will wish to fritter their life away painting or making love. Whatever decision you make, YOU are ultimately responsible for your outcome in this amazing free market nation we have inherited! The sooner the veil of ignorance is stripped away from their eyes and the glaring light of reality sets in, the better.

Those who whine on about OWS don't, won't, and can't understand what OWS is about. They argue Against things that have nothing to do with OWS. In the end, they continue fighting (for free) for the interests of the rich, to the detriment of their own interests.

What is the end result you and these others want to get to? There has been no politician proposing any type of legislation on your behalf, so what is so good about this? Something is very lacking in your thinking. Maybe you are just spouting off, but, I think your children deserve more, they need to know that it is their responsibility to grow up to be productive contributors in society and it is your job to teach them.
