Ohio Craigslist Murders: Second Body Identified

ANDY BROWNFIELD   11/26/11 07:26 PM ET   AP

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A body found in a shallow grave in northeast Ohio was identified Saturday as that of a missing man whose father said answered a Craigslist ad similar to one police say was used in a deadly robbery scheme.

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as Timothy Kern, 47, of Massillon. It said Kern died of gunshot wounds to the head.

Kern's father, Jack Kern, said previously that his son answered an ad for a farmhand similar to the phony ad that authorities say led to the shooting death of Norfolk, Va., resident David Pauley, 51. Pauley's body was found in a shallow grave in Noble County.

FBI Special Agent Vicki Anderson told The Associated Press in an email Saturday that it was too early in the investigation to say whether Kern's death was linked with Pauley's.

Meanwhile, authorities say a second body was found in Noble County on Friday hours after Kern's body was found near the Rolling Acres shopping mall in Akron in Summit County.

Noble County Sheriff Steve Hannum is under a judge's gag order and can't comment on the case, but the title of his emailed announcement – "second body" – implied the discovery was connected with Pauley's death.

The unidentified body is to undergo an autopsy by the Licking County Coroner. The coroner's office said Saturday it was still coordinating with law enforcement on when the autopsy will take place. Officials declined to comment further, citing the gag order.

Kern was last seen Nov. 13 after driving to Akron for a job he called a "good offer but strange." His family has said it was out of character for him not to be in touch. They did not immediately return calls Saturday seeking comment.

A South Carolina man also reported answering the Craigslist ad that police say lured Pauley to his death but the man managed to escape after being shot Nov. 6.

Two people from the Akron area are in custody: a high school student who has been charged with attempted murder and 52-year-old Richard Beasley, who is in jail on unrelated charges.

Beasley's mother previously told the AP that her son has "a very caring heart" and she prays that reports he is a suspect are not true.

She described her son's relationship with the jailed teen as that of a mentor. She said the teen would sit with the Beasleys at church and her son would take him fishing and to the movies or to play video games, and the two would also deliver food to needy people.

Agents have contacted other individuals to check on their well-being, FBI spokesman Harry Trombitas said Friday in an email.

The farm advertised on Craigslist does not exist; the area where the bodies were found in Noble County is property owned by a coal company and often leased to hunters.

He should have told someone or at least not gone alone.

Again another horrible crime! I think men think nothing can happen to them, so they just go without checking on the places first. Everybody is desperate to get a job. We are losing everything, so these kinds of people can prey on just that, people that are desperate for a job. Not thinking to check their i's and cross their t's.

Employers do post on craigslist, because it is free. And Craigslist is used often, so an easy tool for employers and prowlers.

As far as these men going to church. Maybe like the mother said, these aren't the men, however, they could be. Everyone forgets Satan himself can walk into a church! Satan himself knows every word written in the Bible. So why do we always think that if they go to church they are saints!

Watch out people. I pray for everyone of the families!

Never go any place alone that you are not familiar with. Remember that your life is at risk when you go to meet someone in a place that is isolated, keep something in your hands ie: insect replent to spray into someones eyes it blinds them until they get an antidote at a hospital or doctors office, also a can of bright colored spray paint will turn a perp bright green, red, yellow or white. Aim for the eyes which are a very vunerable and sensitive spot as you know when you get the smallest thing in your eye you can go crazy. Also a golf club or crate opener or heavy chain to swing at someone. Watch ID Channel on TV and get some real insight into crimes.

This is nothing newabout 15yrs ago a couple hired homeless to work on their farm gave them money to go to auctions bid on cattle for them , the checks would bounce of course ,they kept the cattle and killed the homeless men .This went on for a while until someone reported one of the men missing and police finally investigated and found bodies buried on their farm .This is merely a sophisticated method of and old crime .I can't remember their names but it was on american justice on A&E

This could happen on any internet "classifieds"...including your local newspaper ads, if some estranged lunatic wants to pursue it.

Never ever go anywhere unless you tell someone where your going and who you will be with....never leave yourself vulnerable. I have a son who used to scare the heck out of me because he would go with anyone and he is an adult. I would call and call his cell phone and finally he would answer only to find out he went home with someone he met at work...he couldn't give me any information because he only knew the persons first name and did not know an address because he had just followed the guy. This is how people disappear...I had to drill this into his head. Always let the person your with know that you communicated to others who you are with and where...it might deter them from harming you.

Are you kidding me? Talk about what a paranoid society we have become. Quite frankly, the killers in this crime would have killed even if it were not for craigslist. If there are more of you i have a great little item for you. Rear view miirors that attach to your head so you can see behind you as you walk. Stop ANY, attempted robbery, theft, assault, grope, feel, or goose for a one time payment of $19.95. (adjusts for day or nightime viewing). So, if you are scared, if you sleep with the lights on, or if you have to call somebody every time you take a crap, call today, don't delay 1-800-YOU-FEAR. most major credit cards accepted.

If I had seen the posting and lived in that area, I would have probably answered it. When you have been unemployed for two years, you do get a little desperate looking for work. Would I have ended up a victim of this guy, probably so. Since I don't have any real family, no one would have noticed if I had disappeared.....maybe under my current circumstances that would not have been a bad thing..

Your post is very disturbing. I hope that things turn around for you soon.

Yes, I agree with Irfreddi.....your post is very disturbing. There are so many individuals out there in the same position as you are and my heart truly goes out to those families who are struggling to survive in these times. I hope, too, that things will look up for you. Please be careful in answering anything remotely similar to ads such as this.

there was another story a few years back where a kid about 20 or 21 advertised on Craigs list that he needed a baby sitter for his kids...he killed the girl when she showed up for the interview...he claimed he just wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone...he never had any kids.

LOL...I imagine anyone that really owns a farm and currently needs a farmhand is going to have a difficult time locating one on Craigslist...Who knows, the economy is so bad people will still respond to the ad in hopes they will be put out of their misery or possibly have a new exciting job millking cows...
