iPhone, iPad, Xbox Top Bing's Gadget Searches Of 2011

Microsoft's search engine, Bing, has released its lists of the most-searched terms from the past year.

According to a post on the Bing Search Blog, Bing compiled its lists of popular searches about people, musicians, news events, consumer gadgets, movies, TV shows, travel destinations and more, "[b]ased on the aggregation of billions of search queries."

Topping Bing's list of frequently searched people was--you guessed it!--teen heartthrob Justin Bieber, who climbed five spots from last year's results. Bieber dethroned 2010's champ, Kim Kardashian, who now sits at number two on the list of the most-searched people, followed by Jennifer Aniston and Lindsay Lohan.

Though Bieber also dominated searches for musicians on Bing, people also showed interest in slightly older artists. Writes Bing, "Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears are showing that old school beats new school, bringing in more searches than Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga."

Among the year's most popular news stories were natural disasters like Hurricane Irene (number 3), Japan Earthquake/Tsunami (number four) and Joplin Tornado (number 6). The number-one most popular news story? The Casey Anthony trial.

Searches for consumer gadgets featured a variety of Apple products, including one that doesn't exist. While we won't give away the number-one product on the list (see slideshow), we will say that it's made by Microsoft. (Not a single Google product made the list.) Interestingly, four of the top 10 spots went to tablets or eReaders and two went to smartphones; but only one spot (number 10) went to a laptop (the MacBook Pro). Holiday predictions indicate that tablets will continue to dominate web-users' searches. According to the AP, a recent report by the Consumer Electronics Association found that tablets like the iPad and the Kindle Fire are the "most-desired electronic devices this holiday season."

According to figures collected in October, Bing controls 14.8 percent of the explicit core search market, trailing Yahoo's 15.2 percent and Google's commanding 65.6 percent. These data are based on comScore's November release of U.S. search engine rankings.

Take a look at the slideshow (below) to view the most-searched gadgets on Bing in 2011. Read on to check out our slideshow of Bing's top 10 search terms from 2010.

with PS2 its the modding scene that accounts for the unusually high search rating.

Pretty obvious Micro$oft massaged these stats to make them look better. If iPad and iPad 2 searches were combined I'm sure they would have been number one, but Bing couldn't let that happen. How many other products did they have to split up to get Windows Phone 7 on the list?

You maybe right, But you don't have the numbers.

You're right I don't have the numbers, because M$ didn't post the raw data. Clearly they couldn't or their massaging of the numbers would be all the more obvious.

Why do you care so much?

It is just kinda sad the lengths that M$ must go to to try to make themselves feel better about just how uncool they are. Not sure wether they are trying to fool themselves or the public.

Bing?  Talk about a small sample size!

Not really. If you read the comSore report you will see that this comes from about 2.5 billion web searches. I don't know about you but 2.5 billion searches is not a "small sample size".

Bing has less than 15% of the search market share. So, yes, small sample size.

Actually it's Xbox, Kindle, Playstation that tops the list, not iPhone, iPad, Xbox.
02:11 PM on 11/29/2011
I wonder how badly it burned Bing (i.e. Microsoft) to have to place Playstation toward the top of the list.
03:23 PM on 11/29/2011
Since it's #3, behind an Amazon product, and the #1 which is their own 360 console... I'm sure it's a warm, pleasant sensation.

PlayStation is only on the list because the major hack job that was done to them this year
01:47 PM on 11/29/2011
Well, duh. Bing is owned by Microsoft, and so is Xbox. That would be like seeing the iPad make the top of a list of Safari Gadget Searches, or the Droid topping the list for Chrome. Thanks for the lack of information...

Seeing as how it's still the most popular game console available, it's not exactly shocking.
03:04 PM on 11/29/2011
Actually, it's not the most popular game console. It never was the most popular game console in this generation of consoles.
01:18 PM on 11/29/2011
Bing? I'm surprised it was not the grammaphone.

XBox 360 is a terrific multimedia device.
