(Reuters) - Facebook Inc is looking to go public between April and June 2012 with a valuation of over $100 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The social media giant is considering raising as much as $10 billion in its IPO, the report said.

Sources familiar with the matter said the company has not made any decision over which banks will be involved in the IPO.

Facebook's CFO David Ebersman is in talks with Silicon Valley bankers about an IPO, but founder CEO Mark Zuckerberg has not decided on any terms of the IPO, the Journal said.

Mr. Zuckerberg is far and away a greater force than Steve Jobs could have ever dreamed of being. Facebook is on every internet-capable product out there, irrespective of OS, or GUI, or OMG. Yet somehow one has arbitrary fanbois and the other has arbitrary detractors. I think I know which one I'll bet on.

The problem with Facebook going public is that -- initially -- sure, it'll launch big based on its name. And lots of people (like Sam here) are going to scoop it up thinking it's going to be the next big thing. Basically, they're hoping to be like the people who scored by buying Apple early, back in the day.

But at least Apple stock is based on a CORE money[making principle. Namely, Apple actually MAKES SOMETHING. First it was computers...then iPhones...now iPads...and I'm sure they're working on something to roll out next.

But Facebook -- like alot of web sites -- makes money off (1) web traffic and ad hits and (2) the way they subsequently direct people to things. But ironically in today's news, to settle with the FCC, Facebook will now have to change HOW it does much of it's business. And again, they don't actually MAKE anything. And as technology advances, all it will take is just ONE visionary geek to create a better or "cooler" social networking platform -- and overnight Facebook will fade.

Case in point: remember LiveJournal? AOL? MySpace? Yahoo? MSN live?...

Been telling people that. No one thought anything would eclipse Myspace. I think Facebook will be around for a long time, but it will not always be as relevant as it is today. Heck, I'm here almost as much.

Agreed, and I would only add Friendster to your list...

Hmmm. How do you think Facebook makes money kids?

"On Tuesday, Facebook reached a settlement agreement with the Federal Trade Commission regarding the social network's policy on changing privacy controls and informing users of those changes."

"Under the terms of the settlement Facebook must obtain approval from users before making changes to the way their personal data is shared on the network. For the next 20 years, Facebook must also submit to scheduled checkups by "independent, third-party auditors" to ensure that the company's privacy policies and practices do not violate users' rights.

There is no rhyme or reason to the moderation here. It continues to be this site's worse aspect.

I had all my Herman Cain comments filtered out yesterday and am *still* baffled as to why. Absolutely no legitimate reason. As for the HP "support" section for answers to questions... I have yet to see it. Questions go out, nothing ever comes back. Must be just for decoration.

Really disappointing and amateurish.

Probably because Herman Cain is just a molecule on history, and the interweb only has so much space.

Mock it all you want, and God knows I do, but once this thing hits the market it's going to skyrocket off of name recognition and anticipation alone, and I'll be damned if I miss out on that.
