Occupy L.A.: Facing Eviction, May Branch Out To Occupy Beverly Hills, Skid Row

WASHINGTON -- After a tense all-nighter with the Los Angeles Police Department, Occupy L.A. activists and their tents outside City Hall have been given a temporary reprieve.

The police re-opened the streets around City Hall to traffic Monday morning and essentially left Occupy L.A. alone. Four activists had been arrested -- hardly the anticipated outcome from either side.

(SCROLL DOWN FOR LIVE UPDATES)

Late Friday, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa declared 12:01 a.m. Monday as the deadline by which Occupy L.A. had to vacate City Hall Park. In a letter to the activists, he wrote: "The Occupy movement is now at a crossroads."

Villaraigosa did not give an explicit explanation as to why he wanted the park cleared of the occupation's 500 tents, food service and library.

Peter Sanders, the mayor's senior press secretary, said in an email Monday afternoon that the mayor "respects Occupy L.A.'s right to exercise their freedom of speech but that going forward, tents will not be allowed in City Hall Park and the laws regarding city parks will be enforced."

If the mayor thought his threat Friday would send Occupy L.A. members scattering to off-site locations, he was wrong. Sunday night's general assembly was packed. When a moderator asked how many people were attending the assembly meeting for the first time, many hands shot up.

But Occupy L.A.'s continuing general assemblies might be short lived. Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck told reporters at a Monday morning press conference that the eviction will happen.

"We will enforce the law on our own time schedule," Beck said. Rumors had already begun that the eviction could come Monday at noon.

The Occupy L.A. activists have been just as adamant about holding their ground.

"We're not going away," PJ Davenport assured The Huffington Post.

"We knew that the eviction order was coming down," Davenport said. "But you can't help but feel cheated yet again by your local government when they tell you that your time is up and you need to move elsewhere."

Yet some within Occupy L.A. are already considering such a move, Davenport conceded.

Los Angeles is a sprawling city with 9.8 million residents and a nearly endless stretch of distinct neighborhoods, enclaves and cultures. Post-eviction, activists aren't thinking about shrinking. They're thinking about franchising. Instead of one space, how about 50 spaces? Instead of Occupy L.A., how about Occupy Beverly Hills and an Occupy Skid Row?

"You will see tents across the metro area," Davenport suggested. "If they're not allowed at City Hall, you will see them around City Hall."

"None of us are interested in working out of an office," Occupy L.A. activist Joan Donovan insisted. "We want real change. We hope that we show that by occupying, we are extremely serious."

Donovan said the idea of diversifying into several spaces may grow out of necessity -- and a way to empower the leaders who grew up through the City Hall space.

"We don't know if we are going to get space this big again," she explained. "The tactic would be to let all the people who became leaders here to begin the process somewhere else ... It would be awesome if there was an Occupy Beverly Hills. It would be the perfect opportunity to talk to tourists about how to better spend their money, how to be better citizens. The idea is to get people to think."

There's serious talk, Donovan said, of an occupation starting up in Los Feliz. And others are talking about Occupying Rodeo Drive. The greater Los Angeles area already boasts an Occupy Long Beach, an Occupy Venice and an Occupy Pasadena, among other spots.

"There are people talking about doing a more permanent occupation of Skid Row," said Jeremy Rothe-Kushel, an Occupy L.A. activist. "The other possibilities are fully on the table. I think there's going to be a negotiation about centralization vs. decentralization."

When an Occupy Miami member offered evicted protestors vacant apartments in a building he owns in Downtown Miami's Overtown neighborhood, it seemed like the perfect solution: the 'Peace City' space would provide headquarters for the movement and shelter a small faction of the group's most vulnerable members. But it hasn't gone well. Other tenants say the building has become a cesspool of drug use and violence while non-resident Occupy Miami members are trying to distance themselves from the 'radicals' -- all while the two factions are wrestling for control over Occupy Miami's social media sites and future plans.

From the Miami New Times:

The feud between the Overtown occupiers and more mainstream members has only gotten worse. The two factions are now battling for control of Occupy Miami's social media sites. The movement's main Twitter account recently announced it had been "hijacked by a small, non-consensus group of radical members." The Occupy Miami Facebook page was also temporarily hacked by someone inside Peace City. Meanwhile, the Overtown occupation is slowly driving away more moderate members.

"This is a black eye on the Occupy movement," says Shannon Reaze, an Overtown community organizer and Occupy Miami supporter who is now helping tenants move out of Paz's building. "The violence and drugs going on here are way outside of what I thought Occupy stood for. This place is destabilized."

...The supposedly hard-core activists here spend their days drinking and getting high. And as Peace City devolves into lawlessness, the most committed occupiers are leaving. Local landowners and politicians want the place shut down, while cops are suspicious. Yet as long as Paz wants the protesters around, nothing short of a demolition order can keep them out.

WASHINGTON -- Occupy DC has a new lawsuit involving tents on its hands. But it doesn't involve temporary structures in McPherson Square.

Two protesters arrested during a February action outside Merrill Lynch's offices on 15th Street NW near McPherson Square have filed suit against the Metropolitan Police Department, Legal Times reports. (Read the complaint here.)

The plaintiffs, Samuel Dukore and Kelly Canavan, were part of a "targeted occupation" of Merrill Lynch on Feb. 13 where protesters were raising awareness about Merrill Lynch's reportedly close ties with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.). Issa, for his part, claims that the reports of these close ties are "wildly inaccurate."

OWS reports via its website:

After the brutal attack on the attempted re-occupation of Liberty Square by NYPD on the 6-month anniversary of #OWS, a number of Occupiers have relocated their base of occupation to Union Square in midtown Manhattan, a point of convergence for several #OWS protests over the past 6 months.

According to reports on the ground, several dozen people slept in the park after the illegal and violent raid on Liberty Square. Over 70 people remain, now on Day 3. Although tents and tables are still banned, Occupiers have brought blankets and sleeping gear. Many are calling it ¨the new Occupation.¨ In addition to holding General Assemblies, Union Square Occupiers are providing vital jail support for those arrested on #M17 as they are released from NYPD custody. So far, the NYPD has made no attempt to remove Occupiers or prevent them from sleeping in the park.

The woman had the apparent seizure has been identified by the New York Observer as Cecily McMillan:

Cecily McMillan, an Occupy Wall Street activist once profiled in Rolling Stone, suffered a seizure Saturday night during protest action near Zuccotti Park. Many on-scene reported Ms. McMillan had trouble breathing after she was tackled and handcuffed by law enforcement.

A video uploaded to Youtube late Saturday night purports to show the attack. Two women can be heard commenting, “There’s Cecily,” then there is confusion as the police clearly perform a violent take-down on someone in the crowd.

According to Jeff Sharlet’s November, 2011 article about the Occupy Movement, this may be Ms. McMillan’s second violent encounter with police.

The paper reports from last night's chaos at Zuccotti Park:

At one point, a woman who appeared to be suffering from seizures flopped on the ground in handcuffs as bystanders shouted for the police to remove the cuffs and provide medical attention. For several minutes the woman lay on the ground as onlookers made increasingly agonized demands until an ambulance arrived and the woman was placed inside.

By 12:20 a.m., a line of officers pushed against some of the remaining protesters, forcing them south on Broadway, at times swinging batons and shoving people to the ground.

Kobi Skolnick, 30, said that officers pushed him in several directions and that as he tried to walk away, he was struck from behind in the neck. “One of the police ran and hit me with a baton,” he said.

Hold on here. Why don;t these movies stars that are joining this group donate their mansions bathrooms and kitchens and their yards for these people to live and destroy. They support these people so why are they not helping them by giving them a place to camp and throw up the tents and some out houses or better yet have them have access to their bathrooms and no nees to waste their welfare checks and unemployment checks let them cook in their home??? Leave the homeless alone . They are not bothering traffic and taking over parks and building or throwing bottles at cops and spitting at them. Why get the homeless pepper sprayed?

I just saw a live feed of this "protest". I hate to say it, but most seem to be protesting for the sake of protesting. Defiance... Guy being interviewed couldn't even articulate why he was there. Interviewer: "Why are you here?" Protester: "It's personal, you know? You got to ask yourself that inside, you know?" Shames me to live in this pathetic Los Angeles. At least in NY they actually had articulate reasons that were worth posting. Like fractional banking.

The protesters end up doing so much work for union causes, like with their Walmart protests and blaming them for not unionizing. Who are these protests really meant to benefit - the unions? Do they want the 99% unionized globally?

And seriously, who hasn't highjacked a Walmart intercom at one time or another?

Miley Cyrus, one of the 1%, has recorded a song in support of the OWS protesters. What an honor!
Since the OWS protesters will visit skid row, maybe they can do something useful like volunteering to aid the homeless and provide them with food and shelter. But, I guess they would rather defecate on the sidewalk.

I've noticed that too. You have to go to the OWS topic above the main headline. How long is that going to last? Eventually, It will be a sub-heading in another section and then oblivion.

Of course, 43% agree that the OWS protesters should get a job and take a bath. The OWS protesters have only succeeded in spreading diseases like drug resistant tuburculosis, STD's. Some have raped underage girls, while others defecate on the sidewalk. A spectacular display of our Constitutional rights!

“And it came to pass as snow began to fly. The richmost and their followers retreated to their warm and sunny climates. The 99 however fought on to gain Fairness in the marble city and on campuses wide.. The 99 continued to help feed and shelter the homeless and downtrodden while the 1% fed themselves ignoring the homeless and downtrodden.. The 99 glowed with the spirit of the season. The richmost agents in marble city continued to deny any attempt to gain fairness for the 99. Agents of the 99 in marble city begged and pleaded with the richmost agents to show some human feeling but they could not because the richmost owned them. In fact the richmost agents in marble city stepped low to tax the 99 more while insisting that their fellow richmost would not be taxed. The keepers of the gates of the richmost cities spent the monies taken from the 99 to condemn, arrest, and jail the 99.They also ignored the homeless in the cold as this was their way as the homeless were invisible to them. But lo upon the land the 99 continued…”

It boggles my mind to picture this. People who block access to public areas and litter parks with trash are going to tell me how to be a better citizen? People who don't have jobs are going to tell me how better to spend my money?

So true, Marxsuxd. California is in HUGE debt for a freeloading reason as the rest of us middle class struggle to support them. I watched the live feed of this "event" hoping to see some passion and intelligence like in NY. Maybe talk about the banking system... But noooo. The guy being interviewed couldn't even articulate why he was there: "It's personal." "You got to ask yourself that, you know?" ... UH, NO, I don't know dude, I'm not the one protesting... They seem to (the majority) just be angry and want attention. They want to provoke a fight with the police. Why put down the police that protect us. Sad, LA, I'm sad for you.

OWS should occupy unemployment offices. The unemployed have time on their hands and had lost the most and will have everything to gain. Wall streeters listen to share holders, politicians listen to voters. NO ONE listens to percussionists playing 24/7. Go for the unemployed! The average working American don't have time to protest, nor do they care to be lectured or be told how to spend their hard earned money.

I can see Occupy Beverly Hills but please do not occupy skid row. I live downtown not too far away from there, our neighborhood has quite a few homeless people, and, long term homeless people have a routine, they have their regular sidewalk spot and their carts and their job (which mostly involves collecting cans and other recyclables.)

And they have enough problems. Please do not disturb their neighborhood with a lot of media and cops and drama. I support OWS overall but that's a terrible idea.
