Iraq Attack: Suicide Car Bomber Crashes Into Prison Near Baghdad, Killing At Least 19

By QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA -- The Associated Press

BAGHDAD (AP) - A suicide bomber slammed a car packed with explosives into the gate of a prison north of Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 19 people, Iraqi officials said.

The bombing in the town of Taji, about 12 miles (20 kilometers) north of the capital, is the third major attack in about a week in Iraq, and raises questions about the ability of the nation's security forces to protect the country after U.S. troops leave in just over a month.

A senior Iraqi security official warned that even more attacks may be in the offing ahead of the American withdrawal.

The attacker struck the main gate of al-Hout prison at 8:00 a.m. local time, when many employees and guards were on their way to work, said a police officer. Ten policemen were among the dead and the rest were civilians, he added. At least 22 people were wounded.

Police officials said the death toll was raised after cleanup crews found more bodies while removing debris at the site.

Two health officials in nearby hospitals confirmed the causality figures.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Guards and policemen fired into the air to disperse the crowds after the explosion, fearing a second blast, said policeman Hisham Ahmed.

"Our patrol rushed to the explosion site. There was smoke and fire all around the place. I saw bodies of four policemen on the ground and scattered flesh," he said. "Women were among the wounded."

Security forces set up a cordon around the prison to prevent any escape attempt by the inmates, Ahmed said.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the prison attack, but suicide bombings generally are a hallmark of al-Qaida in Iraq.

The military spokesman for Baghdad, Qassim al-Moussawi, said that the aim of the latest attacks across the country was to "negatively affect the moral" of the Iraqi security forces. He said he was expecting more attacks by insurgents ahead of the U.S. withdrawal.

"We have information that terrorist groups are planning to intensify their activities, and they are mobilizing all their capabilities to increase attacks for the rest of the year," he said.

Meanwhile, two civilian bystanders were killed and five others wounded by a roadside bomb targeting a police patrol in western Baghdad, police officials said.

Violence has ebbed across Iraq since the height of the fighting, but deadly bombings and shootings still occur almost daily as U.S. troops prepare to leave.

Last Saturday a string of explosions hit a market in Baghdad and an area on the city's western outskirts, killing at least 15 people. Three days earlier, a triple bombing in the southern city of Basra killed 19 people.

Iraqi security officials maintain that they are fully prepared for the American withdrawal, which is required under a 2008 security pact between the U.S. and Iraq. About 15,000 U.S. troops are still in the country, down from a one-time high of about 170,000. All of those troops will be out of the country by the end of December.

But many Iraqis are concerned that insurgents may use the transition period to launch more attacks in a bid to regain their former prominence and destabilize the country.

I have the highest regard for those in our armed forces who have served in Iraq, but with all due respect, it was still a war we should not have waged. Bush should be so ashamed. I will never believe his reasoning. It was not based on facts but on ego.

BUSH SAVED OUR COUNTRY AND THAT IS THAT.

THESE ARE SOMEONE ELSE'S WORDS BUT OBAMA LIED AND NOW PEOPLE ARE GETTING KILLED ALL OVER THE WORLD.

No matter how you spin it, Bush needlessly invaded Iraq. There was no al-Qaida in Iraq or wmd's. To say Bush saved our country by invading Iraq is downright ludicrous.

What Bush did was cost our country several thousand brave young lives and trillions of dollars that could have been used here. If you think he saved our country, you are delusional. And what does Obama have to do with it? He inherited this war.

Bush, Bush, Bush. Who do Bush haters ignore facts? Congress okayed this war after it was convinced that Iraq had WMDs. The Foreign Intelligence Committee reviewed the evidence. Saddam Hussein had refused 17 UN resolutions that would have allowed inspections of his country for weapons. French, U.S. and Israeli Intelligence had knowledge of Iraq's WMDs. Prior to the invasion, there was massive evidence that Iraq sent convoy after convoy of weapons to Iran. Now, I'm sure none of this convinces you of anything because there is only deaf stone between your ears.

Spin it however you want to, it was a totally needless war.

If all of the WMDs were sent to Iran, why did we need to attack? Sorry you don't like my opinion, but we are all entitled to one.

want a way to stop murder bombers today--- let everyone know that the immediate family of any murder bomber will be put in jail for life--- that will end the murders after the family members are in prision

There was utterly no need for the Associated Press reporter to include the sexist quote: "Women were among the wounded." Surely, the reporter would not have included a quote about the race of the bombing victims -- e.g., that "white people were among the wounded." To the extent the AP reporter deems the lives of women more precious than the lives of men, the reporter is guilty of rank sexism.

100 insurgent attacks a week in Iraq? A general assembly in disarray since day one? Did we really establish a democracy there? No. Was Saddam worth 4,300 American lives 32,000 injured and $ one trillion dollars? No! Bush and Cheney, it's on you.

We removed a mass murdering despot. A man that is responsible for a million deaths ... mostly muslim. We gave the Iraqi people the CHANCE for freedom. What they do with it ... is up to them.

"We" removed a mass murdering despot." Not you. Not me. Again, was the fate of the country of Iraq--still a mess--worth the deaths of 4,300 of our soldiers, 32,000 injured soldier, at least a 100,000 Iraq innocent people and One Trillion Dollars of our money to get rid of this puffed up dictator? No!!!! We are not the policemen of the world. We can't afford it, and it is not what our founding fathers wanted for our country.

There is no discounting the danger of terrorists on the loose but one wonders about their brainless activities! Increasing terrorist attacks that may push Iraq to beg for the continued occupation of Iraq by American troops seems to run counter to the aims and security of the terrorists! If there is any hold up in increasing Iraqi security due to ECONOMIC reasons...we should see to it that they have what they need! Roland C. Woodaka

So maybe it's not terrorists doing these things. This is just the sort of thing the CIA is famous for doing.

Yeah, Christianity was every bit as bloody as Islam ... but that was four thousand years ago. Only the gutter religion of Islam has yet to have a reformation.

For myself I am not a violent person. That being said, I do want the remainder of my life to be as peaceful and drama free as possible. I feel that the US got into this mess because Bush Sr. got insulted, then Jr. steps up and says "ya ain't gonna insult my Daddy like that and get away with it." Hence the mess in Iraq and Afganastan(sp). Leave those folks alone and over time they just may clear each other out. Or, if you are going in to try to clean things up, then really clean things up. Strafe from border to border. Does anyone think that they would be concerned about women and children? Their record clearly says, not at all. So use the Old Testement command and wipe the area clean. At the end of the day, meeting violence with violence is not the answer, but sometimes you just have to approach people what they understand. Sometimes an eye for an eye is not necessarily a bad thing.

Somebody has to explain to me how is this justified. I understand that this is done in the name Almighty. But are you sure? You are killing his creatures. Someone tells you it's ok. and that's all the justification you need? Maybe he's wrong. Did he consult the Lord? I think Pres. Bush was in error when he called Islam the religion of peace. My dad tells me when he was in school it was taught that Islam was spread by the sword.

raises questions about the ability of the nation's security forces to protect the country after U.S. troops leave in just over a month.

I don't care if the security forces can protect this insane assylm, I just want the troops out of there.
