'Jihad': Baby With Controversial Name Is The Heaviest Born In Germany

Elfi Yaghi, 40, gave birth to her 14th child in Berlin last Friday -- and gave him a name that's raising a few eyebrows: Jihad. The Islamic term is associated with the Muslim crusade against the west, the Daily Mail reports. More specifically, it means:

"A holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty."

The name also means "struggle," and as Jezebel points out, that's probably what the boy will face growing up with that name. (Not because of any religious connotation, Jezebel adds.) According to the Daily Mail, Yaghi has yet to explain why she chose the name.

Jihad's name isn't the only reason he's making headlines. Weighing in at 13 pounds, he's reportedly the heaviest baby ever born in Germany. And despite his massive size, his mom (who weighs 528 pounds) insisted on a vaginal birth, Dr. Wolfgang Henrich told the Local.

"We usually advise mothers carrying a child with an estimated weight of more than 4.5 kilos to opt for a caesarean section to avoid complications," he said.

Luckily, the birth was without complication, the Local reports. Giving birth to a big baby is nothing new for Yaghi -- four of Jihad's thirteen siblings were over 11 pounds at birth. That's right, she now has fourteen children, weighs over 500 pounds herself and named her son Jihad.

And, though he now holds the record for biggest baby born in Germany, he certainly isn't the heaviest newborn ever. In 1879, Ann Bates of Canada gave birth to a 23 pound, 12 ounce baby, setting (and holding) the record, ABC reports.

Whatever the definition of Jihad -- after 911 -- it just does not make sense to give a Male child that name -- when she had a choice of thousands of beautiful Islamic names. So, she went there for a reason. In addition the reason her baby is so big -- is most probably due; in large part to diabetes type 2 or gestational diabetes. Most babies born to mothers who are diabetic -- come out very large -- which is not a sign of healthy baby. The mother is morbidly obese, and the question is: Will she be around long enough to care for this beautiful baby, and it's siblings?

In Twelver Shia Islam, the ten Ancillaries of the Faith (Furū al-Dīn) are the ten practices that Shia Muslims must perform.

1 Salāt (Prayer)
2 Sawm (Fast)
3 Hajj (Pilgrimage)
4 Zakāh (Charity)
5 Khums (One-fifth)
6 Jihād (Struggle)
7 Amr-Bil-Ma'rūf (Enjoining what is good)
8 Nahi-Anil-Munkar (Forbid what is evil)
9 Tawalla (To love the Ahl al-Bayt and their followers )
10 Tabarra (To disassociate from the enemies of the Ahl al-Bayt)

Thanks -- for the history lesson. What does any of that have to do with the health of the mom and baby. She is morbidly obese and probably diabetic -- which causes all babies born to diabetic mother's -- to be unusually large. This mother needs help learning to eat right and lose weight. I am sure this is a familial problem. So, the whole family needs to be in treatment. Who cares about the tenets of a religion -- when a woman's life is at stake at 500 lbs.

Germans, Swedes, Hollywoodians and of course the 'gheteaux-fab' all love them weird names. Let em, their kids will hate them for it and it amuses the heck outta me.

Nowhere does it say she is not married, yet some posters assume this. Nowhere does it say she is a burden on the state, yet posters assume this. If she was a thin, attractive, white American these comments would not be present. Seems that it is acceptable to hurl abuse at fat people in a manner no longer societally accepted in regards to people of colour, religions (except Muslims of course)

That definition is a stretch. No, it does not mean ""A holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty." except to Islamophobes. The word is often translated as "struggle"--but "strive" is more accurate. It is associated with other words that imply work, labour, a collective effort.

Your dog is ashamed of that comment. Dogs don't judge people. That was downright abusive.

No she's NOT! She is of the philosophy that if you always tell the truth you will NEVER become a conservative old repugnican! She piddled on your remark!

Make fun of them all you want. Keep in mind, though, that the people that have the most kiddos will eventually dominate the human gene pool. Since you can't stop people you deem "undesirable" from having more kids, logically the only way you can correct the problem is ...

Put up or shut up.

13lbs is the heaviest ever in Germany? I work with a girl who's had 3 children. 2 were over 13lbs.

I'm wondering how someone can impregnate a woman of that size, also, how does she have 14 kids? They didn't mention anything about if she is married..

My first "disturbing" thought was, "I wonder if she lives next door to a bar and leaves her front door unlocked after midnight!"

The name Jihad isn't original. I coached a kids a few years ago in t-ball, with the same name. The looks that I got when I hollered across the field to him, using his name, were unforgettable!

My first son weighed over 9 lbs at birth. I weighed 118 when I got pregnant, and gained 26 lbs.

I was miserable the last six weeks, carrying that extra weight - his and mine.

How can someone who weighs over 500 lbs even manage to walk?

At least she didn't name him "Fatwa".
