Hollywood power couple Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes dropped a bomb when they announced their split after seven years of marriage in May 2010, igniting media speculation about what, exactly, went wrong between the "American Beauty" director and "Titanic" star. One may have been right all along -- The Daily Mail initially reported that actress Rebecca Hall had come between husband and wife, eventually driving the pair to divorce: "When Kate found out that Sam had grown close to Rebecca she was upset... Rebecca is totally Sam's type -- a thespian mix of brains and beauty."
Though Mendes' reps vehemently denied the affair at the time -- calling it "utter nonsense" and "untrue and ridiculous" -- the report may have forecasted the future. The Daily Mail reports today that the 46-year-old director and the 29-year-old "Vicky Christina Barcelona" actress are indeed officially an item. "It's true they are in a relationship... They are dating and have been for some time. I can't put an exact date on it, but certainly nothing happened until after Sam's marriage was over," a rep for Mendes told the paper on Sunday.
Hall, who was educated at Cambridge and whose father founded the Royal Shakespeare Company, had acted in two of Mendes' stage productions after meeting him on the set of the film "Starter For 10," for which Mendes acted as an executive producer.
Winslet and Mendes have a seven-year-old son, Joe.
