Scott Walker Opponents Collect More Than 300,000 Signatures In 12 Days For Recall Election

Scott Walker Recall

First Posted: 11/28/11 08:52 PM ET Updated: 11/29/11 08:11 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Activists pushing to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) announced on Monday evening that they have collected more than 300,000 signatures for the effort in just 12 days.

To trigger a recall election, Walker's opponents -- coordinated by the group United Wisconsin -- need to collect 540,208 valid signatures by Jan. 17, which is 60 days after the campaign launched. Organizers said they are aiming for 600,000 to 700,000 signatures.

"Scott Walker has taken to the airwaves, supported by millions in corporate cash, to defend his record of job loss and full-scale assault on Wisconsin's institutions and values," United Wisconsin Executive Director Meagan Mahaffey said in a statement. "But all over Wisconsin, the people are seeing through Walker's deceptions and are moving to take our state back."

In the first 96 hours of the recall effort, United Wisconsin and its supporters collected more than 105,000 signatures from all 72 counties in the state.

An election could occur as early as March 27, although it will likely be later if Republicans challenge the petition signatures or file lawsuits.

The Walker recall is the next step in a campaign to oust state Republicans who pushed forward controversial budget legislation stripping collective bargaining rights from state employees. In August, Democrats recalled two Republican state senators from office, but they fell short of the three needed to take control of the chamber.

There have been only two successful recall elections in history, one against California Gov. Gray Davis in 2003 and one against North Dakota Gov. Lynn Frazier in 1921.

No Democrat has stepped forward yet to announce a challenge to Walker in a potential recall race. Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate said the party won't put a candidate forward until early 2012 in order to keep the fight focused as a referendum on Walker.

"The burden is on him here," Tate told the Associated Press.

Former Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold has already announced he will not be running, although he is supporting the recall efforts.

Walker and his allies have struck back with an aggressive early campaign defending his record, with Republicans boosting their grassroots operation and launching television ads.

On Nov. 19, more than 25,000 protesters gathered outside the state Capitol for a recall rally.

In addition to the Walker recall petition, there are petition drives underway to recall four GOP state senators who supported the legislation going after public employees.

This state battle will be a significant ingredient in the national election. Assuming that the anti Walker forces get enough signatures to get his recall on the ballot or, even a lot more, the Tea Party/gop backers  will flood the state with cash to fight the recall and do everything to delay the recall election. If the number of signatures is big enough these Tea Party/gop moves will put a spotlight  Read More...

It is amazing the support that Scott still invokes even here in the HP comments. He has put so many out of work in the great state of Wisconsin, alienated every group he possibly could, tried stripping woman of healthcare needs and gave you one of the worse teacher/student ratios possible. So where is your tax money going if not to run the state? Have you all received big rebates? He isn't balancing the budget, he is doing what Bush did and just taking the money thru patronage and leaving Wisconsin Middle class stuck with his "party" tab.

These signatures prove only one thing.... The number of people who "work for a living", in our once great state, are now finally outnumbered by those who only "vote for a living".

300,000 signatures in 12 days?
Go Wisconsin!!!

Scott Walker misled the Wisconsin voters by running on a jobs platform and then when elected, he trashed education, collective bargaining, family planning and various other coke agendas.

There is no shame in recalling Scott Walker.

Yet another reason to recall Walker:

"Spectrum Brands Receives 4 Million Taxpayer Dollars for…What?"

WEDC - the Koch Bros. Division that USED to be the Wisconsin Department of Commerce doled out $4,000,000 in corporate welfare to Spectrum Brands.

"Governor Walker and WEDC (wee-dik) announced yesterday that Spectrum Brands, headquartered in Madison, will receive a grant for $4,000,000 to….not leave. This despite the fact that the company, which was originally founded in Madison as Rayovac, just relocated its headquarters from Atlanta back to Madison last year and had given no indication that it was planning to move again. When asked by a local radio reporter if the company had planned to leave, a Spectrum spokesman answered “No, not really.” "

cool, then you should have nothing to worry about. Probably shouldn't even bother to vote.

ha, ha - not bother to vote?

shows that the unions are worried.....

Funny but the home page of your union mentions a recall rally. Maybe you should quit this union job and work for Walmart. Or maybe you can tell us why Walker has your vote. I doubt that - highly.
06:20 AM on 12/01/2011
There are plenty of Union members who refuse to tow the Union line. I have union family members who are forced into strike when they don't agree with what it is they are striking for. The only reason they are in the Union is because they are responsible for multimillion dollar equipment that they wouldn't want to be held liable for if something went wrong.
11:15 AM on 12/01/2011
One example off the top of my mind was the local actors union in my area deciding to go on strike against a tightly budgeted movie project. They over played their hand and lost work when the project moved over to Canada instead. Sadly this kind of story is all too commonly the reason our nations manufacturing industry has moved overseas.

Another example is Union interest being pitted against their members is increasing dues and open voting tactics they keep trying to push forward in order to intimidate members who vote against the Unions bottom line.

Yet another example is the multiple reported cases of union leadership corruption. For example, the Chicago Tribune story of a Union Leader who was re-hired for one day and then retired with a 158000 pension and over 9 million in lifetime benifits.

How many people that where affected by Walkers trickery that voted for him now are defecting ? How does one that voted for another end up jobless ? Those that did support Walker got blind sided. Walker lied to his supporters and will soon be voted out by his own.
12:55 AM on 12/01/2011
Bullshyt - the signatures required for the UNION-backed recall - are NOT all voters.

Anybody in the State of Wisconsin can sign the recall petition - whether they voted or not - and can sign it even if they are not a registered voter.

The VOTERS elected Republican Governor Walker - and will vote for him again.

Here's an idea; sign the petitions so you can vote for Walker twice! All that Walker voting should make you hard!

No they won't. They didn't want a union buster for Governor. They didn't know who he was and voted for him because he had good hair. Well they certainly know him now and DO NOT like what they see.
07:02 PM on 11/30/2011
Walker and his Koch bros. pals will feel the ire of the real people of Wisconsin.......these money(ed) pacs are being so exposed thru the internet etc and they are being scorned by the real people who count...the actual voters. Walker had completely discounted the strong electorate in Wisconsin and will now pay the ultimate political price..............
12:58 AM on 12/01/2011
those signatures acquired for the recall petition - backed by the Unions - are NOT all voters.

Anybody can sign the recall petition - without being registered voter - or voting in the election that Walker won.

The VOTERS of Wisconsin elected Republican Walker - and will vote for him - AGAIN.
01:44 AM on 12/01/2011
i guess we will see about what youre saying..im sure you are a registered republican and making more money than most of the people who want him out....and btw..he is first in losing jobs(teachers/staff) in schools in the US and more...........good luck w/ur buddy

UNION backed RECALL elections are intended to cause harm to the taxpayers to stage recall elections - in another extortion scheme by the UNIONS to force everyone to accept their bullshyt - some as Organized Crime Syndicates.

To the surprise of the Unions and union-owned Democrats,

Republicans were elected - by the VOTERS.

Union are whining - devising FALSEHOODS - for losing the elections - and are NOT getting people to sympathize with their cause - by claiming they want recall elections because of workers.

Unions are IMPLODING all over the nation.

While you are all having a fine time gloating about this , what you don't realize is that this is beginning a new era in politics where recall elections will be commonplace by the losing party trying to get the duly elected official out of office. What this creates is basically, instead of an election race every four years is a potential permanent state of election campaigning. This is a two edged sword , and you won't be so gleeful when elected Democratic officials are facing recalls(as they will be now that the genie is out of the bottle) in the future and have to fight that instead of doing their jobs.

"instead of an election race every four years is a potential permanent state of election campaigning."
I disagree. This man has ticked off people big time. We have Snyder here in MI. I call him Scott Walker Lite. They tried to start a recall here and were unsuccessful. There are many in this state who would like to see him go. He has in many ways done or tried to do similar things in this state. He has been avoiding much of the fall out by just not speaking except to his big business buddies and have his minions carry out the dirty work. We were lied to also. Snyder never said he would tax pensions and did. He never said he would give big business 1.3 billion dollars in tax breaks, but he did.
WI got the same treatment. They were totally b slapped. If your going to run for office you better say what your going to do, and do what you say you will. These ARE the real people of the mid west. They were duped!
Anyone who does these things should expect to be recalled.

Play it again Ithor... same situation here in Florida... the Medicare Fraudster Scott who was fined 1.7 BILLION in Medi fraud was carried into office by the Koch funded Tea Partiers... he claimed the start up of 700,000 JOBS and of course he did the opposite... his attack on Teachers, cops, firefighters has cost jobs not gained them.... seems like all these newly elected jokers from the Party have been given the same menu... Kill the Middleclass and Protect the Wealthy.... surpress the vote...

Sadly, we have no RECALL option... but we got a hell of a education regarding Recall... unfortunately in Florida the gov & his henchmen legislators are all red... this season... hoping to turn them blue next chance at the ballot... of course the voters are being supressed same as with the other tea party states....
