Carey Mulligan: Nude Scenes And Suicide Scene In 'Shame'

Carey Mulligan

Posted: 11/29/11 01:09 PM ET

It may be called "Shame," but Carey Mulligan's latest film is perhaps her most open and honest role yet.

Mulligan has made a meteoric rise through show business over the past few years in a very unconventional way. Instead of romantic comedies and teen movies, she's tackled dramas such as "An Education" and "Drive." Still, she has often projected a sort of innocence in her films. But in "Shame," Mulligan plays the troubled younger sister of a sex addict portrayed by Michael Fassbender, and in the NC-17 film, she explores taboo subjects such as suicide and full frontal nudity.

In an early scene, she appears completely naked, coming out of the shower and taking her brother by surprise. It is not just a quick cut, either; she has multiple lines of dialogue while standing there in full view of the camera.

"I've never, never been naked in a film before; I've been topless once or twice, but always in sort of very innocent ways," Mulligan told MakingOf.com. "And I've always been sort of staunchly feminist about it, I've never relished the idea of doing it, and never if it was inappropriate or gratuitous in any way. But I just felt it was absolutely right; that's exactly who she was. She wanted to be seen, she's an exhibitionist and she's provocative."

Mulligan has spoken about the nude scene before, recently telling HitFix.com that she approached the scene in a different way than most.

"I didn't have to worry about what I ate, or how much I drank, and I didn't have to work out," she explained. "She was an alcoholic mess. She didn't have any money to dye her hair. I mean I didn't become an alcoholic, but I didn't have to watch myself. It was so much more exciting to play that character that didn't worry about her appearance in any way. I knew that when I stood up in that bath naked it wasn't about whether I looked good naked or not. It was about who she was."

Warning: SPOILER Below

There is also a moment in the film when Mulligan's character attempts suicide, cutting her wrist and bleeding heavily. She told MakingOf that she at first took the scene, and the prosthetics they put on her wrist, lightly, but as the scene was being filmed, that mood changed.

"I was sitting there and this fake blood was pumping out of my arms and I was in this completely hopeless state with a kitchen knife next to me," she remembered. "And it was horrible, it was really horrible and I wasn't expecting it, it was a complete surprise, and I felt awful. It sounds so pretentious, but it just made me feel horrible. I felt devastated and I felt so sad. And I'm fine. I'm great and well adjusted and everything's cool, but just the idea of being that helpless and that lonely, it was just really sad. I got into the taxi at the end of the day and I couldn't stop crying."

"Shame" hits theaters on December 2nd. For much more from Mulligan, click over to MakingOf.

THANKS FOR THE 'SUICIDE' HEADLINE HUFFPOST... HOW ABOUT A "SPOILER ALERT"?!?!?!?

Wow, I really want to see this film. When an actress is so devoted to a part in such a genuine, down to earth, and unpretentious way, I give him/her so much more respect. I think Carey has a great career ahead of her. I admire her acting style and she truly brings an effortless light to the screen.

i have loved watching carey mulligan since i saw her in the terrific film, "an education". normally, the dramatic romance genre is not my cup of tea, but i can't say enough about her performance in that film as well as her co-star peter sarsgaard's

in my estimation, ms. mulligan is the most beautiful actress hollywood has to offer these days. she's incredibly feminine, reserved and speaks with a wonderfully elegant elocution. she quite reminds me of audrey hepburn

i appreciate feminine, elegant and classy women and i hope that hollywood continues to promote them rather than crude behaving, vulgar-mannered, poorly spoken, make-up abusing dimwits (a la lindsay lohan or jennifer lopez).

i was lucky to see a screening last night followed by the director for a q&a. i thought the film was very powerful in a quiet way and the acting was superb. i was surprised how much this film made an impression on me especially with the dark topic at had. it was an excellent film as it lets each individual's POV bring it to life. a must see for movie buffs. (btw - the article has no spoiler).

I admit that I am a great big prude, but it seems as though suicide is far to important and nudity is to trivial to be taboo.

You think Michigan's blue? You don't live here.

The prudishness is why it got the NC-17.

Another commenter in the original HP article where Mulligan talked about the rating the film was given mentioned something that I think is a salient point: It's perfectly okay to be sexy and provocative as long as it's romantic or funny - but the moment it becomes serious in tone, unattractive, or if it tries to teach a lesson, it's suddenly "filthy" or "unwholesome" or "obscene".

In essence, as long as it's vapid humor or romantic, it's just fine. But the moment it starts to force you to think, to make judgements, to critically reason about the situation, or to get into the character's headspace to understand the reason they are doing what they are, that's bad.

We don't think critically enough. Entertainment that makes us use our brains rather than turn them off is, in my opinion, worth its weight in gold.

I don't think mentioning that she attempts suicide is much of spoiler. The article doesn't let us know why she does it, what effect it has on the story, what effect it has on the character and other characters, etc. There is still mystery surrounding the scene. I think some people like to have something to complain about.

Mulligan and Fassbender are both talented.
I'm looking forward to Shame.
I liked McQueen's 2008 film "Hunger", so this could be good.

I just hope this film can live up to the hype its been getting.
(unlike Drive. Which was great, but not worthy of the hype/praise it had received)

I'm with you on this. Fassbender has really had a terrific year: Jane Eyre (one of the most wonderful films of the year), Shame and A dangerous method.
And Carey Mulligan is such a brilliant actress. She was so moving in Never let me go.

I liked her in the doctor who episode "blink"

This movie, if it lives up to hype, may fall into the category of movies that are very well done, and that I find unpleasant to watch, in part because of how well done they are.

Not sure I want to see it.
