Boys Wheelchair Stolen

A Philadelphia mother is devastated after the reported theft of her 10-year-old son's wheelchair just two days after Thanksgiving.

Heather Pico, mother of Dominic, told Fox Philadelphia that someone took the chair from her '94 Ford Aerostar van when it was parked outside her house Saturday.

The forth grader suffers from a rare genetic disorder and his wheelchair is his primary means for getting around. Without it, leaving the house is more or less impossible, Pico told the station.

Pico, a single mother, told Fox Philly that she has only one message for the thief:

"Please, just return it. Like, drop it off on the corner, drop it off at a firehouse, I don't care where you drop it off, just drop it off somewhere where they can return it to me, for my son."

It's not unusual that someone would steal a wheelchair. Thieves will take anything that they can hawk. They would let someone have it for as little as $5.00.

It is outrageous that anybody would steal that wheelchair.

I don't know what it is about wheelchairs but there are some strange incidents connected to them. Aside from being stolen, there was an old lady who got one of those free powered wheelchairs from the government many years ago -- and got it to swap/trade/sell. I couldn't believe it. Someone who wasn't even disabled got it and rode around town in that thing looking very disabled and asking for money from passersby.

We don't leave the wheelchair our disabled family needs, in the car, on the porch or any place but inside the house when he isn't sitting in it. I don't know what we'd do without that chair for him.

I hope someone will loan or give that family another one. Those things are very expensive.
What an awful situation.

I'm puzzled by the headline to this story, "Thieves go too far" - are they suggesting it's okay to steal as long as you don't take a handicap item??

How much does a wheelchair fetch? Or, was it stolen simply b/c it would cause pain in the victim?
12:37 PM on 11/30/2011
the people who stole his wheelchair, anyone who would steal a wheel chair should be arrested, tried, found guilty and sentenced to death. These types of people are not fit to exist in society.
02:44 PM on 11/30/2011
make the punishment fit the crime, an eye for an eye, remember these - death is a bit extreme
05:06 PM on 12/11/2011
you are right, death may be a bit extreme. So, let's sever their spinal cord at the 10th thoracic vertebrae and never let them have wheelchairs. That way the spinal cord injury won't interfere with their protective mechanisms for their airway, but they will have complete lack of motor function below the waist and no wheel chair to help them get around. They took away someone's mobility, we should take theirs.

Hm. Isn't robbery in and of itself 'too far'? I feel for the kid, but I see no robbery as justifiable or even acceptable.

People can be evil, what a pity for the boy and his family
----boy's is not the possessive for boy, it's boys'. When did we totally lose grammar and punctuation?
12:09 PM on 11/30/2011
We didn't, but it's nice to be right if you choose to point out an error.
12:16 PM on 11/30/2011
Yah, too bad she or he is wrong. Boy's IS the correct possessive for the one boy, Dominic, whose wheelchair was stolen. Boys' would refer to the wheelchairs of more than one boy. And just in case you get all jumpy about whose; that's correct as well.

Yeah, that's why I don't comment on spelling and punctuation. It's too easy to make a typo, and if you make a typo while you're commenting about someone else's typo, you just end up looking like an idiot! LOL.

Back in the day they had chain gangs...put these idiots to work chained to one another. Make them work, this might give them different ideas about stealing. America the beautiful, soft on crime.

glad the kid got a wheel chair again. Horrible act by somone who doesn't deserve to live.

The only way we'll ever fix these problems is if we actually get off our asses and change laws and our form of currency into one that will allow propper citizens to each earn te same amount of currency every pay check with the removal of non electronic money .

Their is no reason to steal if everyone can reach for what only the rich can get.
10:17 AM on 11/30/2011
WHAT?
